The settings I use for most of my encodes are

--preset placebo --crf 18 --threads 8 --keyint 300 --min-keyint 24 --chroma-qp-offset -2 --merange 40 --me umh --direct spatial --subme 10 --psy-rd 1.10:0

but those are for a size/quality balance; you might want to raise the quality setting to --crf 16 for a higher quality, but I don't think going past that would be of much use.

Hey guys, I used cms382's Laserdisc screenshots to compare three versions of The Jungle Book.

I tried to get the exact same frame.

Left: 1992 LD / Center: 1999 Limited Issue DVD / Right: 2014 BD

Great additions, the middle one is really bland looking.

VirtualDub seems to have forgotten to handle external encoders between yesterday and today, even with the exact same parameters.

There is a 1080i hdtv version listed on TehParadox but the only screen shot isn't from an animated scene.  I have no idea what the quality is and it's about all I can find.

Anyone else?

Dr M, the 1080i hdtv version you mentioned uses exactly the same master for the actual blu-ray. I just checked. I will post later some screen caps of it and also some of the gold collection dvd edition .

There is also an Hindi HDTV version floating around.  And that is all I know about that.  Thanks for checking the 1080i one.

Do you guys know if there has ever been a 1080(i or p) version of "Return of Jafar"? I know there was a 720p version on Cinemagic once and "Aladding the the King of Thieves" got a 1080p version on Japanese TV. Of course all of those were cropped to widescreen, but it's still better than nothing (and I doubt there were ever HD versions of the 4:3 framing)

@Laserschwert - Sure, check TPB.  You'll probably want to strip the 3 Russian audio tracks.

Does anyone have the 1982 and 1995 Dumbo LDs to compare?

Did Dumbo go through a nasty early-days-of-digital digital restoration for its 1995 LD release?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Unfortunately the Russian release is hardly HD... looks more like SD upscaled to 1080, which looks even worse than the 720p versions out there.

I guess Sword in The Stone having a good HDTV release is an exception.  Pity.

I have Dumbo on LD, I'll check which one it is.

How far into the movie is that frame?

I'll check the 35mm print and see how it looks.

Does anybody here have a print (35mm or 16mm) of TJB ? Might be a nice addition on our "to do" list.

Looks like it's the same master as the first LD ("1992 version"), but I don't think anyone here bought the film

-------------------------------------------------------------

I found a 16mm print of Fantasia (the price is "a little" expensive)

Hi, Jolemon, thanks for the links, but one of them is already a goner and the other lack information that the seller is not willing to or can't give (and I think that some of reels contains faded films). Keep both eyes open, thought, we all scavenge for good prints, as you can see, and also for good deals.

 When was it remastered?

Would a 1990 print still be the same as the original?

This is from a 35mm of Cinderella.

This is not a scan, just a photo taken hand-held with the film on a light-box.

Hi, Poita. Could you please reduce the photo a little so we can see it in it's full frame ? BTW, Nice shot.

For TJB, I gess it was remasteres during the 1990's to fit with 16x9 TV screens, but seriously, I don't know, maybe it was even before that. The only thing we know, the frame ratio has been cut for all it's home video releases, as shown earlyer.

On most modern WWW browsers: First, right-click on the image. Next, click "View Image".

Much better than the BR and the Special Ed. DVD, at least. The colour aren't too much pumped, the contrast is ok, and the gamma doesn't choke the color timing.

When the work on this one (scanning) begins, please let us all know.

Is that the same frame with the missing pixie dust?  Because that looks great.

Edit: No it is a frame early but it looks like it has the same amount of pixie dust as the laserdisc, just with more detail, dirt and better colors: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Recommended-Editions-of-Disney-Animated-and-Partially-Animated-Features/post/653541/#TopicPost653541

Looks

I think this is the correct frame.
