^ I'm always impressed with what Don Coscarelli does on a tiny budget. And I busted a gut at one of the title character's subtitled insults.

Still crossing my fingers another Phantasm installment actually happens. Angus Scrimm isn't getting any younger!

The first one was wonderfully weird, the second one was slick, the third one was frankly embarrassing (Reggie having sex with his trousers on while the lady bounced her boobies was pretty cheesy and probably messy) and I haven't gone further yet with the Phantasm series.

He could very easily make a case for plagiarism against a certain lord of time...

You really ought to check out Phantasm Oblivion sometime. It gets a bit into Doctor Who territory. ;)

The Phantasm films are definitely nice to look at, and I love Reggie, but I can't say that I'm fond of how the storyline's been developed; too much emphasis has been placed on ambiguous jump-scare endings and not enough on actually taking the story anywhere.

"12 Years a Slave." It was good and all, very well made, much better than any slavery film I could try to make. But I don't know, nothing really surprised or moved me. Ok fine, "White folk are bad." Tell me something I don't know.

I was thinking about the first three movies in particular. The fourth did show some promise of taking the series to a conclusion.

Had my own Other Marvel Movies double feature last night.

The Amazing Spider-Man

About what I expected from hearing about it for the last couple years. Long, surprisingly boring at times, very unfocused. I appreciate them not immediately jumping into Norman Osborne or the Daily Bugle.

The Wolverine

Now this movie I enjoyed a lot. Even when it was slow, it was trying to tell a story of Logan coming to grips of his new reality, post-X3. The action was actiony, I liked it.

Star Wars - Episode I: The Ridiculous Menace (2011)

Good, but needed more Ric.

7.5/10

Star Wars - Episode II: Attack of the Ridiculousness (2013)

Great, but still needed more Ric.

I'd love to hear more thoughts if you don't mind.

Well, The Ridiculous Menace was very funny, but it dragged a bit too much in the Tatooine part of the movie, and the edited dialogue was a bit crude (that obviously couldn't be helped, though).

Attack of the Ridiculous, however, didn't suffer from any dragging scenes and the editing appeared much more seamless (plus I just loved Jar Jar with Krusty's voice).

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008)

I found this to be a pretty average movie -- which means it was leaps and bounds ahead of the prequels; Anakin actually comes across as likeable here. I doubt I'd be able to stand it if it were a live action film, though -- the antics with Anakin and Ahsoka with the baby Hutt would have been intolerable to watch with live actors handling what would most likely than not have been a glob of CG shit.

Oh, and Dooku's still a shitty villain. I hope the series proper actually gives him some depth as a character, 'cause I can't stand his "evil for the sake of being evil" schtick for even a minute.

The Wind Rises

I've seen most of Miyazaki's movies (though none in the theater), and this one doesn't take many chances. One of his most realistic and restrained efforts, The Wind Rises is nevertheless beautifully detailed and animated. If this is truly his last film, he will be ending his career on a high note.

I've decided to delve into the Hannibal Lecktor films.

Hannibal Rising (2007) 4/10

This film is a prequel, explaining the origins of Hannibal Lecktor, and his appetite for murder and human flesh. Slow moving and standard thriller shock type scares with no truly interesting characters. Sure it is a decent suspense movie, but lacks the psychological complexity of the other films in the series.

Manhunter (1986) 7/10

Not a bad film, but most definitely dated due to the electronic 80's style soundtrack, and filming techniques. The quality and acting in the movie seemed more like a television production then a major motion picture. The film is directed by Michael Mann, and there are elements carried over from his T.V. shows of the time (Crime Story, and Miami Vice). In fact at least three of the major cast of "Crime Story" appear in the movie.  The film is definitely creepy, and worth watching. Actor Brian Cox plays the role of Dr. Hannibal Lecktor, and is quite convincing in the part.

Red Dragon (2002) 8/10

This is basically a re-make (or re-telling) of the same story as "Manhunter". Both films are based on the novel "Red Dragon". The style and tone of this film more closely matches the other Anthony Hopkins Lecktor films. Ralph Fiennes gives a chilling performance.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991) 9/10

This is the stand out, and best made film in the series. Anthony Hopkins is riveting as Lecktor. His charisma makes Hannabal a villain that is truly likeable.

Hannibal (2001) 7/10

A film Directed by Ridley Scott. Definitely not his best work. The story is less interesting then "Silence of the Lambs" and "Red Dragon", but again Anthony Hopkins makes you root for the mass murdering psychopath.  The final scenes are horrifically amusing. I was missing Jodi Foster as Clarice.

V for Victory - Is bretty gud about football if one cares for the actors.

Mio Min Mio - All time favourite with my wife and children.

HUGO 3D - We ran out of 3D glasses so our neighbours had to bring some. Very grand movie film.

1492: Conquest of Paradise - Legend with the great acting. We have French Blu-ray.

Brian Cox says :

Cheers!

Manhunter doesn't look like television (not of the time). Television came to look like Manhunter due to Mann straddling both media.

I prefer Hannibal to Silence of the Lambs. Manhunter like it's source material is pretty much based on the reality of an FBI investigation of a serial killer, albeit a really elaborate and intelligent one which are as rare as hen's teeth.

Silence of the Lambs as a book is a bit more divorced from reality but the film pushes the gap further. It's a good film but it's caught between two stool samples. It wants to be taken seriously like Manhunter but is steeped in all the gothic trappings of Dracula and Frankenstein.

By the time we get to Hannibal the film series is practically out and out Hammer horror (Hannibal the television series is even more fantastical). Two great monsters dancing around each other. Mason Verger is a very dark Batman villain and there's nothing wrong with that. It's spoiled by the ending. Once Foster chickened out they should have filmed the book ending as it much creepier. I would love to see a fan edit where the Hannibal origin from Hannibal Rising is put into Hannibal to make the film more like the book. I would also like to see if Margot Verger can be put in there somehow.

That book is all about reincarnation and sibling love/hate. Hannibal loved Mischa and Verger raped and humiliated Margot. It makes sense that Lecter would want to try to recreate his sister. It continues the metamorphosis theme of the first two books.

Hannibal Rising is a story, like the first Alien vs Predator film that doesn't need to be told but it's surprisingly not bad considering the premise.

Red Dragon (the film) is almost awful in every way. Only Moth3r's performance as the tooth fairy saves it from being unwatchably dull (I'm proud I uncovered Moth3r's secret identity before they practically gave the game away by casting him as the new M).

So, anyone else noticed some serious parallels from The Lego Movie and The Matrix?

For instance...

Emmet=Neo

WildStyle/Lucy=Trinity

Bad Cop=Agent Smith

Vitruvius=Morpheus

Micromanagers=Sentinels

And that's just characters! Not even mentioning the plot similarities.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

I haven't seen the film yet because it's not out yet but something has been bugging me for this trailer for Under The Skin (filmed around the block from me).

I keep hearing the Original Series Star Trek bridge sound under all the other sounds. Anyone else hearing it?

Yes, I do. From around 0:15 - O:20.  The music at the start also sounds like the very beginning of the Star Trek II Main Title Theme.

So 50% so far. Weird.

Anyway over Christmas the better half stayed at home and watched a few films.

He praised The Conjuring (2013) so I thought I'd watch it too.

There are some nice period details (which reminded me a bit of last years Doctor Who episode Hide). I don't know if it's just my childhood but I find there is something uniquely creepy about the early 1970's.

Half the cast act with conviction the other half act like it's a spoof. The film riffs all the Amityville films (including the made for video ones about artifacts from the house), The Haunting (1963) and Poltergeist (1982) quite shamelessly. I really like Vera Famiga, she is wasted in Bates Motel (fun show but too good for her) and she is even more wasted here. Ron Livingston should only dress in seventies fashions, he looks amazing in this film, normally he looks rather bland.

The film is a bit uninspired though. It belongs in the same genre of 'percussive' horror as the Paranormal Activity films. By that I mean It goes through the motions in such a dull, predictable way. Film makers who mention the Salem Witch trials and imply the guilt of any of the women should be eternally damned to a dimension where they are forced to watch Three Sovereigns for Sarah (1985) on a loop forever.  I feel like I'm forced to share space with a Holocaust denier every time now.

In conclusion
