When I first saw the entire series broadcast late night on weekends one summer back in the '80's, Battle had the scene establishing where the bomb worshipers came from. IIRC, only a Japanese LD release had that scene intact before the DVD sets came along.

Even if humans don't become mute savages, and peacefully coexist with the apes, you still have those pesky mutants and their god.

How that never came up in the TV series, I will never know.

Or did it? I honestly haven't seen it.

The Planet of the Apes tv series was just about two human astronauts running across Ape society and teaching them how to actually do things the right(human) way.

Still haven't gotten around to checking out the animated series but I definitely want to.

The Lego Movie (SPOILERS)

I did not expect this. The trailers of course couldn't give away the main twist, but when you know it, it's really quite good.

It's essentially a film about a kid playing with his toys.

On top of that, it's funny, it's not too preachy with its messages, and has some really unexpected appearances.

Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)

Suffice it to say, I liked this movie better when I was a kid. The music's not as good to my jaded adult ears, the actress who plays Mary Magdalene is kind of annoying, and the theological aspect of the movie just doesn't interest me all that much (so Jesus may just be human with human failings and not divine in the least -- could you at least convey that in a way which moves me?). I do like the performance of the guy who plays Judas, however -- he's easily the best part of the movie.

"The Lego Movie" (2014)

I am really surprised at how entertaining and creative this movie is. It has a major Spoiler, so I can't write too much about it. But I would say that it's smarter than it seems. Brilliant writing and directing. If you have kids, younger brothers or if you just want to have a great time at the movies, definitely go see it. It will surprise you.

5 stars out of 5.

DO NOT BLASPHEME! DO NOT BLASPHEME!

I found it more distracting that St Peter was a major player in my father's Betamax porn collection.

Jagten aka The Hunt (2012).

Danish film where Mads Mikkelsen plays a man in a small close knit community, separated from the mother of his son, with an adorable dog. He is falsely accused of sexually abusing a girl at the nursery where he works. Guess what happens?

Yeah it's a bit by the numbers but it's pretty realistic (I know one person who went through this sort of thing and it replicates the situation rather well).

It contains hunting scenes and real dead animals so if that sort of thing upsets you to the point where you would rather not watch the film be warned. It is beautifully photographed and the performances all round are remarkable, especially the child performers but I would prefer not to have watched it because like bkev these sorts of stories just make me tense up and feel rotten no matter how well they are made.

Casablanca (1942)

I thought I had seen this movie. As it turns out, I had never actually watched the whole thing from start to finish. What a great film. Renneau was easily my favorite character, and the dialogue between him and Rick, as well as between Rick and Ferrarri, is great.

Mars Attacks! (1996)

Let's just say that this movie is incredibly cheesy -- not an endearing cheesiness, either, but an embarrassing cheesiness. Almost all Burton films are like this, though, so I can't really complain -- not too much, anyway. I just wish Tom Jones wasn't in this movie -- his presence took me right out of the movie.

I'll finish by saying that I'd probably like this movie a whole lot more if the Martians had been realized through stop motion, which was the original plan, instead of CGI.

Oh man, now some crazy person has to go in and do a revisited of Mars Attacks! and replace the CG with stop motion.

It's a movie based on lurid 1960's trading cards, (Kids love 'em!) and in that respect it's spot on. And I think more highly of it than ID4. ;)

"Heat" (1972) also known as "Andy Warhol's Heat"

an American film written and directed by Paul Morrissey, produced by Andy Warhol, and starring Joe Dallesandro, Sylvia Miles, and Andrea Feldman. The film was conceived by Warhol as a parody of "Sunset Boulevard".

What can I say about this? Shocking, Disturbing, Pathetic, Classic, Realistic.

A very accurate snapshot of what the low-rent Hollywood Sunset Strip freak scene was like in the early 1970s

If you are a fan of the early films of John Waters, you may enjoy it. If not then warning, what is seen can not be unseen.

I've always wanted to own a set of those cards.

I think it's Burton's best film. Satirical, silly, colourful and violent. I'm not a fan of CGI by a long shot but I thought it was very well executed in Mars Attacks!. Doing it with puppets would have been almost impossible (I was tempted to leave out the 'almost').

Everyone in it is knowingly either chewing the scenery or camping it up like christmas. How can you not love a movie that has Piers Brosnan as a pipe smoking boffin who gets decapitated, has his head stitched on to a dog and then has a love scene with SJP (Who is also a frankenstein dog) :-D

It's cool how the Martians don't seem to have any specific plan to conquer earth they are just being ar*eholes. Like when the Martian ambassador pretends to pull out a raygun just to frighten congress.

Also the bit where Tom Jones summons a bald-eagle (Symbolising the USA's victory and rebirth) by singing 'It's not unusual' is insane genius.

Would it help to say that I'm pleased that 90% of the cast wasn't made up of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter?

I found my 1997 diary the other day and read my entry regarding my first viewing of Mars Attacks!.

Me like it.

It doesn't happen that often but it's awesome when it does. Bill Gates getting shot in the South Park movie got one at a screening I saw.

The Lego Movie.

Wow. All praise to this movie for being excellent, then really good, then wonderful, then awesome.

Usually I have gripes with a movie no matter how good, but I don't want to even touch this one as every piece contributes to its wonderful-ness.

Alright, the Star Wars references seemed a bit forced (...) but that part was brief and obligatory.

GO SEE IT!
