Harmy already has Adobe Encore for Blu-ray creation, but just like DVDit it only allows for a maximum of 8 audio tracks, and that's not enough.

I just want to thank everyone for reconstructing the original trilogy as it was conceived. it Is amazing, I was expect this long time ago. George Lucas is a genius, but I do not understand yet that he disowns his theatrical cut. Special thanks to Harmy by the update of reconstruction and improvements to continue working on future versions.

Greetings and hugs from Spain.

Hey. Hey everyone.

This is either amazing or foreboding. Knowledge of the project appears to have reached the ears of Disney/Lucasfilm, due in no small part I'm sure to the recent 25,000+ views of the Sources Documentary on YouTube from Reddit.

Public knowledge may have reached critical mass by now, but if we ever need to be plunged into obscurity, be sure to tell me to set that video to Private. Otherwise, expect continued increase in traffic "from the outside."

While this is cool I wouldn't think this indicates any major change. Lucasfilm is fully aware of OT.com for years now, and the DeEds have reached enough popularity that surely they know about them too.

Yes, but does Disney?

So, you've uploaded the video to "help spread the word" about the project and now that the word has indeed spread somewhat you... toy with the idea to make it private in order to prevent the project from gaining attention? What were you expecting?

Author
Time

Yeah this is pretty much exactly what we want, I should think.

I mean, unless there's legal action. In which case it's too late and making the video private would

  • make things look shady
  • make it harder to gain public support

and so far, legal action doesn't appear to be happening. Hooray!

Agreed.  They may also think that HanDuet is actually Harmy in disguise and that could be either good or bad.

I'm hoping we stay safe here.  Disney may or may not put us out to pasture depending on the fine print between them and Lucas.

I always keep myself calm by looking at how popular Ady's work is and there was never any legal action against revisited. I don't think we're really causing any losses for the copyright owners here, especially since the vast majority of financial returns from SW are currently from toys and EU stuff, so if anything, we are helping promote their products and they also need good publicity before the release of the new episodes.

Not to mention, one of the prevailing theories explaining "Why did they release the GOUT when they explicitly said they'd never release the originals again?" was that the GOUT was released to shut down the burgeoning industry in Star Wars Laserdisc rips (because, at least on the video side, the GOUT was marginally better quality than those rips).  And it more-or-less worked, simple competition.  Superior product at a fair price.

If that theory is true and the pattern holds, that means they may consider the best way to deal with us is to deliver a better-quality product at a fair price.  Although I have my doubts they can actually deliver on "better-quality", supposing for a moment that they actually did it, I think most people here would be happy to pack it in and call it a day, including myself.

Well, yes, if they actually delivered a proper release, with good detail, no visible DNR and proper colors, I'd call it a day too :)

Harmy, this latest version is amazing. The restorations of Mos Eisley and the Death Star run are spectacular. I can't see what you could ever need to do to improve on this. Thank you so much!

Author

Oh, don't worry; even if they do make an official version from a better source than the GOUT, there will still be work for us to do.  It's bound to have errors and shortcomings since they'd never put as much time and dedication into it as folks like us.  Just think of it as being a potentially much better source for future Despecialization efforts.  ;)

Lol, yeah, I wouldn't worry too much. Pass the guy a link. The bio says he's a contractor. Did the address say it came from his contractor's domain? Either way, there's no way they haven't caught some wind of it.

Think about it though, it's such a fractional minority of fans. I'd still call it plenty "under the radar."
What they should do is just say "look, Harmy, here's your new office, now, let's work out the authoring and package it up..." ;)

Of course, they probably won't, but they'll probably also never bother messing with the edits done here.

Fair enough. While I fully expected (and hoped that) uploading that video to YouTube would make knowledge of the project more widespread, I know that others here have expressed hesitation at spreading the word for various reasons. I've been helping a steady stream of newcomers to SWDE learn how to download the project for a few months now; I figured it's a good way to help curb the frequency of posts made here asking for help.

This was the first "high profile" person who's contacted me asking about SWDE, though, so I thought I should let you all know, as this gives a good impression of how widespread knowledge of the project is.

By the way, if anyone wants a copy of the "script" I send everyone who asks me for help downloading SWDE, just shoot me a PM. Responding to these requests is pretty simple when I can just use copy & paste. I'd also gladly provide demographic stats on who's watching the Sources Doc on YouTube, if anyone's interested.

A quick scan of the Technicolor print at 720p on iTunes would not be beyond their capability and would likely satisfy many fans without it detracting from their Bluray releases, whilst still being an improvement over GOUT.

Or is the Technicolor print not the original undoctored deal?

One wonders why an actor involved in the movies has no better access to an original source than we humble folk.

The first part of the Technicolor prints had the opening crawl replaced in 1981 (with requisite music cue matching error).

Why would an actor have better access to the original Star Wars films than anybody else? They are films that have been actively suppressed.

I certainly want to remain hopeful but the only release I see ever happening is what's already currently available on the market .... George's SE, now the only "Original" version of the OT.

The GOUT was merely a somewhat better laserdisc transfer than we're used to with loads of warts that were easily fixed by them but ignored.

I'm far happier with my Laserdisc versions any day of the week.

You mean all those hit n runners myself and some others had to stop giving invites to because they couldn't stay long enough here or the spleen to even become temporary members after getting what they wanted ..... LOL.

Well, I must say that if the only problem with the release was that it has the 1981 crawl, that certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. An iTunes only release on the other hand, definitely would. I seriously don't understand, why someone would be willing to pay nearly the same price as for a BD to download a 4GB 1080p with vastly inferior sound and little to no extras. I've had the opportunity to see a few iTunes encodes and they were horribly compressed - the only kind of film, where this kind of compression wouldn't matter much would be a CGI animated film with no grain, so an iTunes only release of Star Wars would be a total slap in the face.

And a simple scan of an IB print with no further work done on it would also not be a satisfactory release - you have to do color correction on a scan, to make sure the colors correspond to the way the print looks when projected. The prints are pretty old, so there would be dust and scratches and stuff, that should be cleaned up (although admittedly a wet gate scan could take care of most of those) and even with just that, it would be an acceptable release, but definitely not a good one.

I agree with you on all points.
