All Things Star Trek — Page 30

I watched Star Trek VI the other day and the humanity of the characters shined through as if they could be real people.

In fact i think its the last good star trek movie and that was in 1991.

The JJ Abrams mess is so bad even though i have seen both films i cannot bother to rewatch them and they were like watching someone else play a videogame.

The only character even remotely on par with the classic film series was Captain Pike played by Bruce Greenwood.

“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.

I tried rewatching Generations last night in prep for a podcast crossover I'm doing. As the TOS guy, I was trying to watch it as if I'd never seen TNG. While its OK as a TNG movie, its terrible as a TOS movie.

I understand that TNG had been around for 8 years and who's going to go into Generations with no knowledge of TNG, but it really doesn't serve as an introduction to anything. Who are these people? Who cares?

It's my opinion it was WAY too late in the game for them to have a "passing of the torch" movie. TNG had had it's run, several TOS characters had already passed it, including McCoy in the freaking pilot. It's not like anyone who was still holding out would be convinced by a movie where the TOS characters are treated like second-class citizens, then murdered.

So, if I read you correctly, you gave it 4 out of 5 stars then? ;)

I agree, sadly.  Loved it when it was new and I was very young, but now watching it, it kinda sucks.  Like you said, it's much better as simply a TNG movie, and it piques my interest in "Kirk-less" Generations at FE.org.  On the other hand, it's the only time we ever see the Enterprise-B, so it's a shame to lose that stuff.

As a TNG movie, it's actually really good. We're having the guys from the TNG podcast on our TOS show to talk about how it works as a TOS movie, then my cohost and I are going on their show to talk about how it works as a TNG movie. I'm planning on tearing it apart on my show, and praising it on theirs.

I grew up hating Star Trek. All I knew of it was The Motion Picture, which is one of the most boring films I've ever seen, and The Next Generation, which is full of pseudo-drama, techno-babble and very dull and dry characters. But, for whatever reason, I've been watching the original series on Netflix... And I love it!

However, I'm guessing someone has pulled a George Lucas on it as many shots of the Enterprise look very CGI. Am I wrong? Some shots really stand out as being 'new'. I like this stuff enough to invest in some DVDs or BDs, but I wanna see it the way it was originally broadcast. Is that available?

The Blu-ray contains the 2006 "Remastered" version and the original versions. I actually interviewed the producer a couple weeks ago:

They were careful to not mess with the edits any, no Greedo shooting first or anything. I go back and forth on which version I prefer, but having the original effects goes a long way towards my acceptance of the new ones.

Thanks for the info! Having both versions would be ideal, so that's great! (Take notes, George!) It's also good to know that the versions I'm watching only have updated effects and not added content or altered scenes.
There are maybe two shots of live action that were replaced, new establishing shots, but you are watching the original edits of the episodes. The original plan was to only replace the space shots and fix the mattes, and that's usually all they had time for.

Generations is the movie that started Data along the path of becoming a complete joke. For that alone I detest it.

All the Next Generation films play like parody versions of the their television counterparts (and those were hardly the most brilliantly constructed characters to start with) but those films are very similar to the JJ films in terms of character depth.

None of them are as wonky as the one with the humpback gays though.

As if I needed any more reason not to watch Abramstrek ...

All Good Things should have been the TNG big screen debut movie. Scary to think the cast is about as old now as their characters were in the "future" parts of that episode.

If there ever was to be one last hurrah for the TNG cast, bring back Q to test humanity one last time.

Erasing a statue that was part of the planet set for Wink of an Eye crossed the line a bit, but the original FX are seamlessly branched on the Blu Rays, thankfully.

You know, I asked Rossi about the background in that episode, forgot about the statue.

I have the TOS blurays and the CGI shots are kind of hit and miss. Some shots look good, but some look like really bad video game cutscenes.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I wish they had just taken the next step and actually refilmed models for all of the replacement space shots.

You'd think that would have been considered. The miniatures made for the DS9 Tribble episode ought to have still been in Paramount's hands when the remastering started. Other ships like the Fesarius and the Doomsday Machine could be CGI.

Personally, I would have borrowed the original big E back from the Smithsonian and undo that horrible paint job she has now. Laser scan the entire model for future use as well. ;)

Are there any motion control FX houses left in Hollywood these days?

Motion Control is still utilized every now and again. I saw a special feature a while ago for the last Night at the Museum movie where they built a large miniature of the main hall and had a motion controlled camera move through it to create some zany flying sequence.

Update: It was also used for Tron Legacy.

I'm sure that was cost prohibitive for an in-house effects studio. It was never supposed to be a grand restoration, it was supposed to be something to get TV stations to want to air 40 year old reruns. Maybe someday they'll go back again and recreate the 17 stock shots using new motion control models. Who knows?
