I'm sure one of the reasons they showed McGann regenerating into a young Hurt was to give us another few hundred years of Doctor stories in book or comic form. I think it would be interesting, I imagine even a "warrior" Doctor would have difficulty getting his hands dirty.

A) That's cheap, cheating and counter to the spirit of the BBC Charter. You shouldn't have to buy something to get the background on something you have already have paid for it's too commercial. The War Doctor was meant to have been the destroyer of worlds, drenched in the blood of billions. in the episode he was rather sweet all the time. the tenth Doctor in the Family Of Blood was much more frightening, indeed this chap gives me the willies :

B) Who on Earth sounds like John Hurt? It would have made more sense to loosen the cuffs on the Eighth Doctor range and have him the War Doctor. He could have been in the episode and in other specials and audios and explore those past adventures.

Inventing a new incarnation played by an old actor who is difficult to impersonate and have him carry such an important story was an idiotic move.

I imagine it's more to speed up the thirteenth incarnation explanation leaving a blank slate for whomever takes over from the Moff.

All in all i absolutely loved it. But it does bring up one hell of a huge plot hole that really can't be explained (again a spoiler so will wait until a few days before discussing it but anyone who has seen it should have figured it out)
Ady, care to elaborate now?

I'm wondering where the call to the other Doctors came from (the Tardis perhaps but she is very rarely understood by any Doctor).

Why are ALL the Daleks and ALL the Time Lords in the universe all concentrated around one planet ? (I thought Arcadia would be a refugee colony planet) . . . Why does it take the Doctors 3 (or 13) of him and his Tardis) to do this rather than the Billions of Time Lords and Tardises on the Planet ? . . . . . What was the need for the Zygons sub-plot other than to pad the episode out (or pay for the suits to be used in later Zygon stories or to justify the new slightly different Zygon action figure) ? . . . . . etc........

I still haven't had my question answered!!

at the end of the last season, they were all on the doctors grave planet (whatever it was called) and the war doc pops up....the end

what happened then. All of a sudden it's back to normal In this episode..

i don't get it????

They got into the eleventh Doctor's Tardis (not yet the Tomb) and got on with things, now that all the splinters of Clara had saved the Doctor's timeline.

Though I agree it's not obvious going by the way the episode was edited.

John Hurt is apparently the Doctor's name too???

yeah, they never really explained how the Doctor and Clara got out of the Doctor's timeline.

I was thinking about this....perhaps 3 doctors failed to save the planet.....and soon after Smith's Doctor regenerates the Capaldi Doctor enlists all previous incarnations to lend a hand.

The Zygon bit was for comic relief & to mirror .....blow up London to save the World/blow up Galifrey to save the Universe

they never tied up the Zygon thing.  They just left them and the humans negotiating.

No way. I found Skyfall a moderately good action flick, but as a Bond film it is hugely overrated.

I though this special was brilliant, as did everyone I've talked to - apart from Bingo "miserable old git" Wings.

By Dr Who's Skyfall I meant its a film celebrating its 50 years making nostalgic references to its past

OK, this wacky formatting is too much. Our rich text editor (TinyMCE) needs an upgrade.

I asked Jay in an e-mail to upgrade to the latest version of TinyMCE, but he never replied.

Can you ask him?

Now this I actually agree with. I would have liked to have seen proper Time Lord weapons - i.e. doing serious damage to the fabric of space and time - not just generic OMG LASER GUNS PEW PEW PEW.

But hey, The Five Doctors had plenty of flaws, but I loved that as well.

I agree. I also would have liked to see more shots of the TARDIS being used as a weapon.

I was delighted to have John Hurt in it because really what can't be improved by having Aragorn/Caligula/Quentin Crisp/Hazel the rabbit/Malcolm Scrawdyke in it?... the man can play anybody.

But I have to agree with the above comment that it would've been preferrable if McGann had been the "War Doctor" since his marvellous turn as the The Doctor never go a fair shake (Visually anyway). And yes despite my overall enjoyment of the special, we never actually saw the "War Doctor" do any warring which was odd.

Peri is in the top 5 but for me it's gotta be either Ace (Who can't resist a girl with a holdall full of explosives and a Dalek destroying baseball bat?)...

...or Tegan for that outfit in 'Resurrection of the Daleks'...

... for a boy in the 80s that ^ was the hotness!

Either them or Colonel Leftbridge-Stewart's moustache...

Peri might have been good looking, but I could never get past her annoying voice.

I would say a three-way tie between Leela, Clara and Martha.

I preferred the FIVEish Doctors.

Damn, I have to agree with Mr O'Wings again. Just watched this and yes, this is as good, if not better than, the special itself.

I checked out the cast list on Wikipedia after wondering why Frank Skinner was in it, and it turns out just about every cast member has some connection to the programme.

The Zygon thing (plot wise) seemed to be there for two reasons.

A) It proved to the Hurt Doctor that despite the pain of pushing the big red rose shaped button the guilt he felt for doing it was character forming (this makes out that all the other Doctors were less capable than the McCockney and George McFly in a bow tie but I digress). It gives him the inner strength to do the right thing and destroy millions to save countless trillions (which he doesn't because.... think of the kiddies).

B) To explain how the Doctors broke through the time lock.

Remember the door? Remember how they spent ages trying to figure how to break it down with the sonic (using the same technique they would later use to move Gallifrey)? Remember how Doctor Ten was confused as to how they broke the time lock?

It all stems from that scene.

The Tardis calculations have finally worked their way up the time stream and hit the the 11th and 12th Tardis (the 9th is already in that time zone).

The door isn't locked anymore they just assumed it still was.

It's like the hot bucket in Alien 3. It telegraphs the resolution of the story.

...or the Twin Dilemma as she would be later be remembered as ( I preferred her dad...but I would...Planet of Fire is the gayest piece of television ever broadcast. it says something when Anthony Ainley is not the campest thing on screen).

As for the ladies I'm more of a Mary Tamm guy myself.

If Planet Of Fire is the gayest piece of television ever devised The Stones of Menstros has to be the most lesbian piece of family sci-fi.

Mary in a flat cap and high heels dangling off a cliff is one thing but pipe smoking Beatrix Lehmann and her companion 'quaint' Susan Engel do seem to take quite an interest in Romana the first.

Can you blame them?
