"Faces" '95 THX Laserdisc Preservation (SW & ESB released. ROTJ incomplete)

I’m in the process of capturing the “Faces” Laserdisc set and was wondering if any completionists out there would need it? (I recall a user saying they were looking for this).

This preservation contains all of the content on the “Faces” set from the Fox Video logo to the FBI Logo.

I have only captured Star Wars so far and will capture the rest tomorrow. If you have any recommendations as to capturing and quality, please let me know.

CAPTURED WITH: Pioneer CLD-980 (COMPOSITE) to Hauppage USB-Live2.

AUDIO: LPCM Stereo 1536kbps.

RESOLUTION: 720x480i (non-anamorphic).

I know the GOUT DVDs made use of the master from the DC and “Faces” set, but this contains the 1981(?) crawl, which some people like and the interviews straight from the laserdisc. Plus, a lot of people (like myself) grew up watching this set and it has a lot of nostalgia.

Also, I have not preformed any cleanup on the image.

This is great.  This is the one I grew up watching so there's a lot of nostalgia here for me.  Looking forward to it. =)

That's strange; when you stack the shots like that it appears that the top black bar is brighter than the bottom?

I've noticed that. Could it be because they are from two different sides (of the Laserdisc)? Analog isn't as consistent as digital.

I'm working on capturing ROTJ this week and will try and upload the complete set to the Spleen by Saturday.

It seems that the bars in the second screen are brighter than those in the first - it's not just the top one.

The ESB DVD is ready to be authored and I'll capture ROTJ tomorrow night. Here's a sample from the set for anyone that's interested.

The capture is MPEG-2 480i, but contains 384kbps audio, not the 16bit LPCM audio that will be on the DVD: http://www.mediafire.com/?e92re06qdti3gz6

-11/14/2013-

The ESB DVD is authored and it is 7.13 gigabytes. Now I just need to capture ROTJ and the preservation will be complete.

Are those issues related to the disc or was this a problem with the capture?

Anyway, this is great news. Thanks for putting in the work.

It was a disc related error. If I had some spare change, I would replace the disc but the video doesn't drop out or anything, so it doesn't need replacing.

For those of you curious about quality, check out the link 2 posts above me.

That looks like crosstalk, which can be attributable to disc mastering, or your player (I think). I had the same problem with my copy of the US SE set, only on side 2 of the first disc when played back through my older LD player. I don't remember seeing the same crosstalk on my newer player the last time I checked, but I wasn't looking for it. I don't think cleaning the disc made any difference, either.

Yep, totally crosstalk. When you align the crosstalk to the actual image (the window behind Luke) it matches and fits in seamlessly.

Lots of interest here, and to think I was trying to see if anyone was interested in these LD's a couple of months ago as I wanted them off of my shelf....not a peep ;)

Good stuff with the capture, thats why I originally got them years back when the first LD rips were going on (thought I'd do my own) but alas, they sat and now Harmy :D

Keep up the good work!

For those who enjoyed the EMPIRE rip, I'm doing the SE's now, but with much better capture equipment and codecs. I also plan to recapture the FACES set once more with these new methods.

I think many people would be interested in a 1995 ‘Faces’ THX laserdisc preservation. Your screenshots were very good.

There are some amazing versions of our most beloved film trilogy. The community has produced absolutely amazing work.

I am also working on a preservation of the “Faces” laserdiscs. I’m planning to do a sharpen/detail and cleanup of the image with a scale to 720p. I think with my video processing equipment this should look pretty fantastic, the one thing I currently lack is bit perfect audio capture.

I’ll certainly keep everyone informed - happy to contribute to JawsTDS if you need my help. I can send you a raw rip of ROTJ without any cleanup or edit if you are having capture issues
