I'd like to hear from others on this issue of stores opening on Thanksgiving, especially other Americans.

My wife worked for years and years at a job that required her attendance at just about every holiday.  Does it suck?  Sure.  But that's life, and it was the life she chose.

I'd imagine some people find it offensive because they consider it a whitewash.

A fairy story interpretation of a minor historical event that flies in the face of the broad sweep of history... just guessing.

well, all  I can say is that  I don't Thanksgivingday was intended to offend anyone.

Bingowings said:

And as I say I can imagine circumstances why some people would rather work a holiday than not.

when they are going to paid whether they work the day or not ?!?!?!??!

Bingowings said:

I can also see a viable solution to employees being forced to work a holiday against their judgement that don't revolve around a general boycott that might endanger their job the other days of the year.

I don't.    I don't you realize how high the percentage is of Americans who celebrate Thanksgiving.

Bingowings said:

As for you personally I imagine you wouldn't be out going to shops and restaurants on Thanksgiving anyway so your personal boycott is already in place for that day of the year.

I  am not just talking about boycotting them on Thanksgiving itself.

well I would agree if she had the type of job that provided an essential function, like cops/firemen/firewomen/doctors/nurses that sort of thing.

I think stores that have decided to open Thanksgiving Day should be boycotted.   Let the employees enjoy Thanksgiving Day with their families.

I work on Thanksgiving, and I don't care.

pretty sure that is a very minority view of the people that have to work on Thanksgiving.

Is Thanksgiving every year on a thursday? Then I work every year on thanksgiving. That's because I live in Germany and we don't celebrate Thanksgiving. Yet. Until a few years back we didn't celebrate Halloween either...

Right now I don't feel like reading the past posts on Thanksgiving, but I'll throw in my two cents anyway.

The onset of the Christmas season coming earlier and earlier has always bothered me, but at the same time... Thanksgiving is a sham of a holiday and I'm kind of glad its importance is diminishing little by little.  Conversely, I've never had to work retail on the day of - so I probably don't have proper perspective on whether this is okay or not.  I love my turkey day enough that I'd hate working it.

I think it's pretty obvious that Bingowings likes to play devil's advocate with you on almost any occasion.  You see things rather black and white, while he tries to give you a more nuanced perspective.  I don't agree with him most of the time, but I want to make it clear why he argues with you more than others

Or perhaps sometimes I'm not joking and actually believe what I type much of the time and credit people with the intelligence to figure out when I'm not...magic pants ;-)

Oh, I know that you believe what you do.  I just think you are more open and persistent in sharing those beliefs with Warbler because he holds his views very strongly with little grey area.

I'm surprised we don't see more DCs. It's like TPM3D. The footage is there. There is guaranteed enough of a return to finance the post-pro enhancements and FX. everything after is gravey.

Warb and I often don't believe the same things but beyond that I don't think there is a unseen agenda behind our differences.

It's probably more that we have lived very different lives more than anything.

The world is a big place so it makes sense that people who see things rather differently will occasionally enter into the same orbit.

maybe it is not as easy to figure out as you think.

I don't believe I'm over estimating the intelligence of the community.

When I'm joking there may be some difficulty in getting the joke because culturally we aren't the same (as you point out) and the reference may be not as obvious or known but detecting that a joke is intended shouldn't be too hard. Unless there is some kind of underlying personality disorder or substance abuse in the mix (we do seem to have a fair share of forum contributors who claim to suffer from some form of autism, for example).

I prefer to believe some of the postees who are a little more difficult to fathom are perhaps up to Swiftian hijinks so even the really awful stuff I take with a dollop of salt.

When someone posts something seemingly culturally offensive or bigoted my first impulse is to not take it seriously, then to wonder about the health of the postee and maybe get offended a bit if they seem very sincere all the while accessing if my own views need a reappraisal (which they never do naturally because I'm always right...right?).

I know of people where I work that fit into every one of Bings examples. I'm one of 'em. The only holiday I request (demand) off is Halloween. I'd rather work a shift on Thanksgiving becasue 1- the store is usually empty, so there is very little to do and 2- I get paid double to do less than usual. If I work a morning shift, I can visit the family that afternoon/evening and if I work the evening, I can  visit in the morning/afternoon. No big deal.

I take it you're being forced to work on Thanksgiving Warb?

On a tangental subject our lovely neighbours came round last week with lots of pumpkin for obvious reasons.

My instincts told me to make a pumpkin curry but I was talked into making a pumpkin pie, which I have never done before so I had to look up how it was done.

I made the mistake of trusting Nigella Lawson.

The pie was okay a bit too sweet for my taste but I can tone that down next time.

Where she was way off though was the oven temperature. She said 180degrees but instead of a nice orangey gold colour it was sort of chocolate brown (150 would be more like it).

It tasted fine though but next time (and there is still plenty of pumpkin in the freezer) hopefully I will get it right on the nail

I don't come on here enough, and it's a shame. You folks are much nicer to talk to than anywhere else.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas
