Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD** — Page 81

For someone like myself who wasn't born to catch the original in theaters, but was heavily raised on them, my only experience with the summer tradition came through the prequels.  So I have no problem breaking this tradition, haha.

For Episode I, my friends and I first watched the original then off to the theater we went.  For Episode II we first watched the originals, followed by Episode I, and then to the theater.  Finally for Episode III we broke the pattern and watched them in order.  My buddy's dad had an awesome projection set-up in his backyard, so I fully admit, the summer provided us a good setting for that.

I enjoyed the prequels for what they were back then, when I was a bit younger, but it's hard for me to sit through any of them anymore.  In that sense, I am fully open to breaking tradition, because it tells me the creators are willing to mix things up.  Even through something as small as a release date change, shines a glimmer of hope for something fresh with these movies.

We, the fans, need to let Disney know we will not tolerate a winter release.
Star Wars has always been release in May, and will always be so, even if it has to be May 2016.
Who's with me?

I don't care. So I'm not a fan, am I?

I'm ok seeing the film a couple of days later, so I won't be standing in any lines. And anyway, that never happens in my country, we hate standing in lines :D

And I couldn't care less if it's released in May or December, I just think, that having the movie lie finished in a vault for half a year, just because of some stupid tradition would be totally moronic.

I just hope it's not delayed three months in Japan like every geek movie seems to be doing lately.  The hobbit was the only movie we got at the same time last year, and now the second one isn't even coming out 'till the end of February.  Japan is constantly the last country in the world to get movies, usually two months after the second to last country.

Fingers crossed.

If you don't mind me asking... are you a citizen of Japan?

I'm a "permanent resident," which means I'm the closest to a citizen as I can get.  It's basically the Japanese green card.

I'm very happy with the December release, because it'll be really easy for me to take a Christmas trip to America.  ;)

I wasn't suggesting they wait until 2016. One tradition that will likely be upheld is post production wrapping up at the eleventh hour.

So, this guy really plans on skipping the film unless it's released on a certain date? And he thinks others will feel the same and will join him? And so many that Lucasfilm/Disney will shelve the film for five months? Crazy.

Is this  Victor fella havin' any luck stirin' up an angry mob of petition signers over at the wild world of Google+?

Let's face it: the change in SW tradition happened in October of 2012, when we knew from that point forward we'd see Cinderella's castle (before the Lucasfilm logo) in the opening credits of every movie….and most likely not the Fox fanfare.

Furthest from the bright center of the universe

^Only twothree good Star Wars movies start with the Fox logo and fanfare anyways. No big deal.

Fixed.

When did originaltrilogy.com transform into originalduology.com?

It's just my opinion. My Star Wars world is much smaller than most folks. Jedi isn't a terrible film, I just don't like it nearly as much as the first one. Or even the second.

OK, cool. I'm sorry for jumping on you like that. I just see a lot of ROTJ hate around these parts.

FWIW, my (most favorite->least) order is given here: 6-4-5-...-1-3-2.

Well, your apology isn't accepted and I'll hate you forever and then five more years!

Just jokes!

Not only is shelving the film for 6 months  to release on a certain date stupid, it could be potentially dangerous in regards to Eps 8 and 9.

Unlike a lot of films where a sequel is a possibility, in this scenario we KNOW that we are getting a trilogy. With that in mind, they will probably get things rolling for Ep 8 as soon as Ep 7 is completed. If Ep 7 is completed 6 months before any audience has a chance to see it, that means that Ep 8 will be developed completely independent of objective opinions provided by fans who have seen Ep 7. Without that input, Ep 8 could well be made in a perpetual vacuum, following the formula set in place by an Ep 7 that might really suck.

I could be swayed to accept 6 more months of post production to really tighten things up though, so long as they take advantage of the extra time.

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

I was hoping - perhaps naively - that Ep7 would be made at the same pace as the original film, which started shooting in March of '76 and was in theaters just fourteen months later.

Abrams started shooting Into Darkness just sixteen months before its release, but we keep hearing about a Spring start date for production, so maybe fourteen months was a stretch.

I think if we had it our way, Abrams and Kasdan would continue to work on the script for one more year, principal photography wouldn't start until March of '15, and Disney would release it in theaters May of 2016.

Oh, and they'd let 20th Century Fox release it in theaters purely for nostalgia ;)

Honestly, the December release is probably due more to lack of competition at the Box Office than anything else. Summer of 2015 will be a much different beast than 1999. The World of Warcraft movie is also scheduled for December 18, but Universal will probably push it back to March now that they'd be going up against Star Wars.

It's important to remember that Disney didn't just buy Lucasfilm so they could make money. They did it so they could make a whole shit-ton of money. Putting it out in a December landscape where they could clean up at the box office well into the winter months always made more sense than competing in a summer arena filled with the other studios' prized fighters. That's already gonna be a bloodbath without throwing Ep7 into the fray.

Considering the budget on this thing will probably be big (200 million just seems to be the expected norm these days for a movie like this), and that Bob Iger has been promising a 2015 release over and over again, a summer 2016 release was probably never gonna happen.

Hey, we're looking at a roughly year-and-a-half schedule from the start of production to release. That's still a signifigantly tighter schedule than on the prequels, which filmed two whole years ahead of release since every shot was gonna have some kind of visual effect. Also, Episode VIII will probably be a summer release since I'm pretty sure the Avatar sequels are squatting December for the next three years after that.

George was preparing The Star Wars long before 1976 though...I think??

I imagine some of his Flash Gordon adaptation ideas ended up in the final film too.

To bring something fresh to the table probably does take a bit of time.

It's far too early to tell if Avatar is going to be any serious box office competition to Star Wars.

See any kids dressing up as Navi for Halloween lately?

I didn't say anything about who JediTemple34 is or isn't ignoring, just that Antcu and I are in a few of the same groups. (we're ignored by JediTemple & we think Superman is overpowered)
