A whole new story? But aren't they contractually bound to follow Lucas' treatments?
One of the commentors on the Badassdigest article said that all of the executives want to be a part of Star Wars, and that is probably contributing to the uncertainty over the script. I'd like to think that this wasn't true, but it sounds plausible. It may just be such a massive psychological undertaking that nobody really wants to commit to a story for fear of it becoming like Episode 1.
As Alan Shepard said while the suits waffled: "Let's light this candle!"
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

The new story thing is probably just a rumor, but even then, I haven't read anything that indicated that there were stipulations in the contract about those treatments. They completely own Star Wars now, and I assume they can do whatever they want.
“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas

If true, what a nightmare.

A very safe bet. Just consider the question: or what? The contract between Lucas and Disney was the sale of property - not a licensing agreement or a joint venture. Lucas has his $4.05billion (minus taxes) and that's that.
The blue elephant in the room.
George Lucas' story treatments are cursed. Ideally, they humored them to his face only to utterly disregard them later.
IMDB (for what it worths) still says:
Writers:Michael Arndt (screenplay), George Lucas (characters)
So it's not updated yet with JJ and Kasdan working on the script, all right. But,even before that, IMDB only listed Lucas as characters creator and not story creator.
This probably means nothing. Just something I thought I should mention here.
A year into this new Disney era, and all we get are rumors and more rumors. I want to see something, dammit! Mark getting fitted for his Jedi outfit for one.
Where were you in '77?
Another script rewrite article:
It could be that Arndt's Star Wars Sequel will end up promoted as one of the greatest films never made if the final film is a disappointment.
This tends to happen with a successful corporate brand.
One group wants to make a good product and another just wants to maximise profits.
Look at any film set in the Alien universe after Jim Cameron proved to Fox there was more money to be made out of penises with teeth.
It's hard to invest in a film about monks living on a wooden space station when millions of dollars in investment and potential profits are at stake (for one example).
**Someone should make that film now...different alien, rename the characters but keep the design and the plot....sigh***
Scripts are rewritten all the time. Most do not get the scrutiny a Star Wars film gets.

You guys are so cute. I just wait for the movie to come out, go see it, and form my opinion of it. I skip all the years of teeth-gnashing.

I don't think anyone outside of the inner nerdom has heard of the other Star Wars treatments.
Superman Lives, Untitled Alien Prequel and maybe Vincent Ward's Alien 3 are much more in the public domain. That may change with this one, especially if it flops dramatically.

But you miss SO much.

My teeth will start gnashing when someone posts plot spoilers outside a dedicated plot-spoiling thread. I hate to think what it will be like for those that compulsively read every thread :p
Personally, I'm much happier with the writer of Raiders Of The Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back handling this over the writer of Toy Story III.
Star Wars has been a children's cartoon for decades. Let the adults have a few hours for a change.

I see what you did there.

Well Star Wars always had both adult and children elements. There is a huge misconception among many fans who say the prequels were for the kids. The prequels had as much adult stuff as OT. The difference is that both adult and kids stuff in the prequels was bad/annoying.

Well at least it's not that Demon Lindelof
They're probably saving him for the final pass. You know, to polish things up and add a tinge of mystery as only He can.
I'm happy with Kasdan. There's at least a tiny chance now that this might not suck completely script-wise.

I don't think it's a misconception necessarily. It's my observation that it is a lie that the PT/GL apologists at TFN tell other people and themselves in order to stave off that sinking feeling they'll get, (that the rest of us felt in 1999) when they sit down on opening night for Ep VII and are schooled in what Star Wars is supposed to look like.

Kasdan also wrote Return of the Jedi .
What really worried me is that Simon Kinsberg guy who wrote X3. How involved is he?

Ok, so 2 out of 3 then. ;-)
Still better than Toy Story.
Have you seen Toy Story 3? Or Little Miss Sunshine? Anrdt seems to be a great character writer, which may be just what the new SW needs.

I think Arndt is probably a very good writer, BUT, he worked very closely with George Lucas to develop the script . He's not a miracle worker after all.
