2010:The Year We Make Contact explains 2001 a bit. Perhaps too much. ;)

I went to see the Kubrick exhibit last summer, and seeing items like the Starchild and Dave's space helmet close up was totally worth it.

I'm still mad I missed my window to watch 2010 IN 2010. Still haven't gotten around to seeing it.

That kind of timing could be a problem if they ever adapt 2061 and 3001 into films. ;)

What don't you get about 2001?

It's a pretty basic story which I understood perfectly well when I was 11 or 12yrs old (I might have seen it before then but I can't remember).

My strongest memory of Eye Wide Shut was remonstrating with the couple having sex behind me in the cinema (it wasn't even during an erotic scene).

It was a regular Odeon cinema too.

How grotesque.

Perhaps "not getting it" was the wrong terminology.  I followed the plot well enough, but I do feel like I'm still missing something.

I don't agree with some of the explanations either.

With 2001 I always thought that HAL (as a sentient being) was using his sensors etc to reach out to TMA2 in much the same way the apes reached out to TMA0 and the lunar astronauts reached out to TMA1.

He evolved.

He started killing the crew because they were a threat to him and his goal in life (to complete the mission) just as Moonwatcher started killing to secure his life goal to survive long enough to pass on his genes.

The whole government conspiracy/mental breakdown crap just went counter to everything in the original story.

A bit like those Star Wars prequels (though 2010 is a much better film than the PT).

I hated Eyes Wide Shut the first and only time I ever watched it. I liked the cinematography, and the story started off interesting enough, but when the plot ended up going literally nowhere all I felt was cheated and ripped off, that I'd wasted 159 minutes on fuck-all. I've been ambivalent towards Kubrick and his work ever since.

I used to like The Shining a lot more than I do now. Ever since I've read the novel, though, I haven't been able to see it as anything more than a beautiful car with no engine.

I actually like 2001 a helluvalot more than I used to. As a kid it bored me to tears with it's slow pace and incomprehensible plot. I've come to appreciate it and even like it, though, as the novel helped explain the bizarre sequence of events, and because I'm no longer a slave to lineral storytelling.

It took me most of my life to summon the willpower to sit through all of '2001', as I always seemed to slip into a boredom induced coma about 45 minutes in. But after finally seeing a couple of years ago, it's alright, looks very nice, sounds nice but is painfully slow. Watching a space air-hostess walk very, very slowly along a velcro floor isn't my idea of exhilerating/mind-expanding sci-fi ;-)

Also I always disliked 'The Shining' until I saw the longer US cut last year, which I loved. I'd rank Kubrick's films as follows...

1) 1957 Paths of Glory
2) 1964 Dr. Strangelove
3) 1975 Barry Lyndon
4) 1960 Spartacus
5) 1971 A Clockwork Orange
6) 1956 The Killing
7) 1980 The Shining (US Cut)
8) 1987 Full Metal Jacket
9) 1955 Killer's Kiss
10) 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey
11) 1999 Eyes Wide Shut
12) 1962 Lolita
13) 1953 Fear and Desire

Stephen King finally got The Shining adaptation he really wanted. Yet, with the release of his sequel novel Doctor Sleep, he's been bitching about Kubrick's film again. I thought he had some sort of agreement with Stanley to knock that off?

It must suck to cash those royalty checks for editions of the book with Jack Nicholson on the cover. ;)

I first tried 2001 when I was 8, I think. Didn't get it, kept falling asleep. I considered it overrated and boring until I saw it again at 15 or 16. Since then it has been one of my all time favorite films. Kubrick's best, in my opinion.

'Rush' 2013 (At cinemas now)

It was like... freeeowwn, bruuum, raooorr, kechaaang, vrmm, vrmm, neeeown, screeeeech!!!!

But seriously, it's 'Rush' by name 'Rush' by nature. The sound design and exhilerating direction combine to make a film that captures speed and it's danger like nothing I've seen before.

Chris Hemsworth as Hunt and Daniel Brühl as Lauda are so perfectly cast. At the end it cuts briefly to actual footage of them and for a second I didn't even notice. 'Downfall's Alexandra Maria Lara as Lauda's wife is outstanding too. The film tells the stories of both men simultaneously yet seperately in a way that felt fresh, I could never decide who I was rooting for more!

The film also looks like it was shot in the 70s, after his work on 'Dredd', Anthony Dod Mantle is fast becoming my favourite Cinematographer.

Does "sucked balls" count? Cos I just watched The Lone Ranger.

Johnny Depp's different silly hats are no longer enough to convince me that he is playing different characters. Skip this derivative and formulaic garbage that is almost devoid of entertainment and watch Shanghai Noon instead.

Gravity (2013)

Had to wait longer than I cared to finally see this. Definitely worth the wait. Loved this film. Beautiful visuals, great action and pacing. Loved it all. It also was the best 3D I've seen in a long while. I had to keep flinching during one scene because stuff kept flying at my face. It was fascinating because I was aware it wasn't real but I couldn't stop from flinching every time.

Into The Wild (2007)

For some reason I avoided this film like the plague when it came out. The thought of having to decypher Eddie Vedder's vocals during a 2-3 hour movie didn't sound like something I would enjoy too much. I had never heard the story of Chris McCandless. It was hearing Survivorman Les Stroud talking about the film that made me decide to watch.

Going into the wilderness with nothing but your clothes, a gun, and fishing equipment is something that's interested me for years. To get away from society for a while and sort of just work for the simplest things. So in a way, I relate to Chris. I'm not going to do any spoilers just in case there are a few people out there who might still want to watch it.

The movie I will say is pretty good. I still had issues with the soundtrack. I like Pearl Jam just fine, but I still don't quite get the appeal of hearing Eddie Vedder and an acoustic guitar for 3 hours. Sean Penn as an actor has proven himself over the years to be a great talent, and judging buy this, I'd say he definitely has a good eye for film.

Emile Hirsch is an actor that I'm not terribly familiar with, but I've seen him in the past. I highly doubt I would've liked this movie near as much if anybody else had played the part. Absolutely solid acting. Actually felt like watching a human being for once. You feel his struggles.

8.5 balls out of 10.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

^The book was better.

===

A Night at the Movies (1937) - 6/10

The Haunting (1963)

I liked it a lot more this time time around than I did the first time I saw it. The book's still better, though.

9/10

The World, the Flesh, and the Devil (1959) - 9/10

Master of the World (1961) - 7/10

The Tomb of Ligeia (1964) - 7/10

Night of the Demon (1957)

Great movie. The only downside were the close-up shots of the demon - it almost turns an otherwise perfectly sublime film into some goofy kaiju film. It's a minor flaw, though, and not enough to bring the rest of the movie down.

8/10

Fright Night (1985)

I would have liked this movie more had the main character been less of a dipshit and/or the movie had focused on his girlfriend/Roddy McDowell's character instead.

7.5/10

Late to the party with Pacific Rim.

If time travel was invented i would have passed this onto my 10 year old former self and i would have been a life time favorite for ever after. Ship, i still have fond memories for Robot Jox FFS.

So can anyone help me out with time travel? Oh, and a Blu-ray tranfer to VHS?

Something has changed in me though since, i dropped my balls....rating to...

6 outta 10 giant robot balls.
