Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Well, I was misinformed about when the movie was coming out and so in the last week of September I burned through this book so that I had read it all before seeing the film adaptation. Suffice it to say, I was annoyed when I found out the true release date. But I found the book captivating enough that I probably wouldn't have taken much longer to finish it regardless of when I had started. I thought it was thoroughly enjoyable. Though I could have done without the siblings' subplot.

Just realised that Orson Scott Card is an anagram of Sod Contractors even his name is offensive (when you shift the letters around).

LOL, that actually is pretty funny.  I do find it a little ironic, Bingo, that you find Card so objectionable, yet recently read Dune with the very negative and controversial portrayal of Baron Harkonnen.  I don't want to spur more argument, but it is strange to me.

I was hoping you would notice it. :)

The difference between me and you is that my post is completely on topic and is not disrespectful. :p

Hmm... Seems that Frink has made a new arch-enemy, guess it's time for me to fill the Han Solo role.

Baron Harkonnen is a single fictional bisexual character in a cavalcade of almost equally nasty people most of which are heterosexual (it would be like having a go at the few instances of nasty gay people in Game Of Thrones) and Frank Herbert is dead.

Orson (unlike Mork) is real and alive and talking homophobic BS pretty much frequently.

Baron Harkonnen is bisexual? I know he experimented in his younger days, but still ...

Sounds like a naive view to a complex story and character from a book that has been praised and received two prestigious sci-fi awards.  Quite honestly, I find the political views of many of my favorite series' authors (i.e. George Lucas) quite objectionable, but that doesn't mean I will boycott their products, call them names, or assume the worst in his motives.  I admire many people for what they do that is good, even though they, like all of us, are prone to the human foible of bigotry.  Yes, each of us is prone to it in one form or another, and OSC's views are not motivated by hatred towards homosexuals, but by ignorance.

I'd just like to say that after I travel backward through time to the 1920's, I'm boycotting H. P. Lovecraft.

lol, I neglected to put what I said in quotes. Those aren't my words and I don't believe them. I just thought that the following Kuro5hin article was well-known enough to mention in passing without having to cite it: http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2005/5/28/22428/7034

Like the example I gave about Dali my impressions of Lovecraft's work were modified by reading about his attitudes to people with different skin.

I have come to mellow to him again after reading that those reports may be exaggerated.

Apparently he used to go out of his way to offend the easily offended because he didn't like people in general.

So in a room full of liberal folks he would act reactionary and in a room full of reactionaries he would act like a libertine.

He would be polite to people of all ethnic backgrounds and then out race then fashionably racist at dinner parties.

It's hard to tell what he genuinely believed and may have been a just proto-garfinkeling.

Either way he is dead, long dead and a man of his times.

Card is alive and vocally behind the times (least those times return in force in which case get me the hell off of this suburban nightmare of a planet).

Ah, pardon my ignorance.  We recently had a discussion where I had rushed to Card's defense.  One might easily surmise that I am interested in his writings, so forgive my zealotry.

You can't know this for certain.

But I enjoy Ender's Game irregardless.

See title for details.

The last thing I was reading was a Discover magazine from April, 2009.

EDIT: This was the beginning of a thread which is now merged with the other, more successful thread of this nature, hence the seeming out-of-place-ness of the first bit of this post (and the title).
