I always burn at 2x.  Sony Blu Ray drive, some of the cheaper media my drive won't even recognize.  Blu Ray media is not something to go cheap on.

Although my computer and burner are out of commission, I can confirm what djchaseb said. Burn at 2x, and use good media like Verbatim. Not one coaster yet. I also burned a 50GB Sony disc with no issues.

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

As an English speaking person - which is the best audio track to view this with?

Is it possible to remove all the other audio tracks too somehow without losing any quality to reduce the file size?

Thanks.

Which Sony and Samsung burners are you guys recommending?

I'm not sure if I should burn 2.5 to disc or wait until the BD comes out. I already have 2.0 and 2.1 on Blu-ray I waited a while after 2.1 came out but eventually I broke my will power and burned 2.1 to disc so now I have 2 versions of Star Wars on disc. I am wondering if I should burn 2.5 to disc now or if I should wait for the BD whenever it comes out.

Another more important question that I have is that it seems like some members of this forum Chyron included are brainstorming their idea to take Harmy's files and make it there own, so should I wait for the Chyron/whatever edition to come out to compare it to Harmy's before making my decision?

I will download whatever Harmy puts out my Hard Drives have more than enough room and my bandwidth is always up to the challenge but Blu-ray discs even 25GB discs can be expensive so I want to make a smart decision

I don't think that anyone that was going to use the files to make their own discs were planning on uploading them anywhere.  I think it's just more for their own personal use for different reasons.

For example, Harmy is releasing two BD discs (one for movie, one for bonus stuff) and Chyron wanted everything on one disc, so he's just making his own when he has everything.  (I think that's right)

Truly, THANK YOU SO MUCH (to Harmy and to ALL those who have contributed) for providing us all with this truly AMAZING v2.5 release!!!

…and I do also have a few questions about the upcoming v2.5 Blu-ray release:

The game-plan to expand and further refine the v2.5 .mkv audio offerings to include even more lossless tracks, and then present it in BD25 size Blu-ray format with a full feature menu (including chapter stops matching the GOUT release) sounds excellent!  This keeps the focus for that disc on the full-length feature, itself, while allowing for an incredibly expansive offering that provides first-rate viewing and listening options to the widest audience possible (and greatly reduces Harmy's technical headache of trying to get too many goodies onto ONE disc).

As for the BONUS disc, what should we expect?  You have said that it will be released on a separate disc along with the BD25 format feature disc and that it will have a unique menu background design.  Also, I am a little confused about the mini-voiceover audition a few pages back…is this for a re-work of the original SOURCES feature and/or for something else entirely?  IF the SOURCES feature is to be re-worked, could you still include the original version with your voiceover…as that's going to be my favorite if there is a re-dubbed new version (no matter how silky smooth Mavimao's voice may be)?

I am really excited to see what I am hoping may be an expanded collection of NEW/ORIGINAL Despecialized "making of" bonus features (which I hope may still include an original audio re-master featurette by hairy_hen) alongside what I am hoping could be a well organized "anthology" of Star Wars (1977) bonus features (such as interviews, deleted scenes, "making of" features, trailers, toy commercials, and the like) in the best quality available from the many different "official" releases AND any other notable OT member preserved bonus feature offerings.  Whether you opt to go for a smaller ALL original offering OR more of a "definitive" collection of bonus materials, I have no doubt that it will indeed kick MUCH ass! ;)

All the best!

-A.S.

p.s  …and while I'm at it, could I get a bike, and a pony, a Tonka truck, and a lollipop?  Pretty please Mr. Harmy Clause? :D

Actually, I am currently writing a script for a Despecialized Edition documentary, of which the Sources doc will be only a small part.

Here are the chapters I have in mind so far:

- "Introducing the Despecialized Edition"
What is the DeEd and why it was made.

- "Introducing the Versions"
What are all the different versions and what are the main differences between them. The resolution comparison will be a part of this when talking about resolution of PDE vs. DeEd - Why 720p and not 1080p.

- "Introducing the Sources"
This you've of course already seen - only the intro with the Ronto will probably be cut and put in front of the "Introducing the Despecialized Edition" doc and some parts will be shortened and the info moved to preceding chapters (like e.g. the flaws of the GOUT DVD will be explained in the first one.)

- "Introducing the changes"
How the changes were discovered (about 005's galleries) and examples of how they were dealt with - the old lightsabre clip and more.

- "Introducing the colors"
A bit about how the color correction was done.

- "Introducing the Soundtracks" Again, I'd dearly love to include this one but I cannot with clear conscience attempt to do it myself - I could do the video side of it, but not the audio side and the script of the narration, so if anyone can help me with it, I'd be very grateful - even if hairy_hen is busy, I bet someone else who understands audio could look into the threads and comments made by h_h and Belbucus and write a little script for me and tell me what sound clips to use to best illustrate the points. If anyone volunteers to do this, I'll send them the scripts I already completed, so they can get an idea of how to approach it.

Then there will be this comparison gallery in higher quality and then the same thing in movement as a 20 minute long video.

And I don't plan to put any non-DeEd related stuff on there, except maybe some trailers, which I will try to recreate in HD.

Hello,

I'm attempting to download the De-specialized Edition from Myspleen and I keep getting the error (failure bad client with peer i.d M7-2-0).  I'm using BitTorrent 7.2.  I also tried disabling firewall to no avail.  Not sure if this is an issue with Myspleen or BitTorrent or both.  Does anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong or what the problem could be?  Thanks!

Check your BitTorrent client log.  My guess is that the version of your client is not allowed and is being blocked.  Check the MS FAQ for "recommended clients" near the top of the page.

I'm getting the error "Some tracks not recognized" in tsmuxergui.  The h.264 video appears along with the three AC3 tracks I chose.  It should also show the three DTS MA tracks from my final mkv.  Any help getting tsmuxergui to recognize DTS MA tracks would be appreciated.

Edit:   I figured it out.  All I had to do is get the latest version of mkvtoolnix.  The one I used before was 3 years old and apparently combined with the DTS MA tracks didn't jive with tsmuxer.

I finished the download yesterday evening but haven't watched it yet ( that's my weekend plan :-) ) However I went quickly through the audio tracks and while I didn't have any problem to listen to the first audio, the second audio track (theatrical stereo DTS HD-MA) was just pure static, and the third audio (theatrical mono DTS HDMA) was sound combined with static.

Of course the problem is that I don't have the correct software/hardware combination to play it, but is there any chance that some of you would upload the two tracks separately encoded in some lossless format (e.g. wav or flac)? I could use the audio from version 2.1, but I would really prefer to have the tracks lossless and I'm sure other people would love that too :-)

Thanks in forward

I'd be happy to provide a script for the soundtrack documentary. Could do with a check by hh before use, though.

My favorite is the restored mono mix.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Possibly. The jury's still out on that. I prefer it, but I may not actually bother. We'll see.

Can't say I recommend it yet, since it's in-transit from Amazon, but I bought the Samsung SE-506BB/TSBD 6x Slimline External Burner. It's very compact, which I like for moving around from computer to computer.

The online reviews are pretty positive, the only major gripe being that it's a bit slow, but for $89, I'm not complaining. If I'm going to be burning at 2x regardless of the drive, I don't want to pay $150 for the privilege.

First, this sounds awesome! On the "versions" section - will this touch on the changes across all the home releases, such as some of the major changes on all of them? I think it'd be cool to have a quick rundown of some of the more "famous" and arguably rather stupid additions/changes.

From a relatively untouched VHS / Laserdisc era, to 97SE, to DVD, to BD, that'd be cool to see a quick breakdown.
One thing that'd be great to show on that would be a picture of the 2006 DVDs - something like opening it up, showing the 2nd disc thrown in there, then played on a widescreen to illustrate how sad it is that it's the only official release of the originals, in original form. I mean, yes, I'm glad to own them, but it's sad that they're only really barely worth watching on a CRT, which you can't even really buy anywhere anymore.

Regarding audio, man, I don't know. Being that I'm kind of an audio geek myself, and understand pretty well what he's done, I still don't know if I want to speak too much about this since I'd rather he have his shake at speaking to the things he did directly - which, BTW, is AWESOME for the 2.5 release. Some serious time and attention paid to making it very well done. Normalizing separate soundtracks to be at similar levels is no small task either. That had to have taken some serious time to get anywhere close to where it is now.

If nobody else wants to tackle this in the coming days, or if he can't, for whatever reason, I'd help. I could show some Pro Tools and/or Audition screenshots of a few differences to illustrate the levels being changed etc. Sum up the major points from previous threads. Could summarize some of the differences in these versions, but honestly, I would rather all this come from him directly - credit being due where credit is due and all that. Hairy_Hen's familiarity with all the details would also far exceed what any of us could speak to. If it did come down to mentioning all the things he's done, it'd have to be made very clear that he spent a great deal of time, and attention to detail on all of it.

All of them are cool, but if you simply want to watch a movie, 5.1 should be your choice.

Is it possible to remove all the other audio tracks too somehow without losing any quality to reduce the file size?

Thanks.

I'm definitely still interested in making a documentary of sorts about the various audio tracks; it's simply a matter of finding the time to actually do it.  There's a lot to talk about, and I would certainly try to present as much information as possible (both about the tracks themselves and what was done to optimize them), but without going into so much obscure detail that it would confuse people.

Well, that would be wonderful. If you don't have much time for it, maybe you could just write a script and let me put it together.

I actually meant versions of the DeEd (v1.0, v2.0, v2.1, v2.5). What you talk about will be covered in the "changes" video.

That's a great idea. Actually, my BD player doesn't even allow for the GOUT to be zoomed in, when I press the full screen button, it simply stretches it out and it doesn't zoom it, so the only way to watch it on my BD player is with black bars on all sides.

Regarding the bonus docs, make sure to consider the safe frames this time around!

If you need more info on those, let me know :)

To elaborate, as it's not quite so straight forward... while you can find MKVtools easily (even though it often goes by the name MoKgVm2DVD), the version of tsMuxer you require is called VoxMac Unofficial build, it's on the videohelp website (address below) and is listed under 'More information and other downloads' - it's the one listed for OSX SnowLeopard. Annoyingly for it to work correctly you need to remove 2 korean language fonts from your Library - it tells you exactly which ones in one of the read me files when you mount the dmg.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/tsMuxeR
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MoKgVm2DVD

It's a bit of a pain but easy when you figure it out. Unfortunately I've noticed the audio file names stripped from MKVtools are generic so are clearly stripped of the information about which track is which, you can tell the right order (stream 0, stream 1 etc) but when picking an audio track they all just say whatever language you assign to them in tsMuxer - if anyone can advise of a better demuxer for Mac that retains the audio track names, then I would love to hear about it! Seems so much easier on Windows :(

I followed the above approach... thanks to Harmy, btw. I used MKVtools, then added the files to tsMuxeR which created an AVCHD titled "BDMV".

I should add that I am on a Mac - I have Toast and a Blu-Ray burner, but I'm not sure how to burn this. Do I burn as a "Blu-Ray Video", "BDMV Folder" or something else?

Sorry in advance if this has been covered - I've read so much, I'm going cross-eyed.
