I think DTS-HD MA mono causes problems because it is not assigned to any particular channel and the player has to interpret what to do.

It might make more sense to encode as duplicated stereo or 5.1 center (with other channels silent) so that systems know exactly what to do with it.

Unlike DVD, Bluray does not require any special layer break provision AFAIK.

If you wanted both movie and bonus extras on the one disc, you could use a BD50 for the extras and include the movie mkv as a separate file, but it would mean no menus for the movie.  The other alternative is to get Harmy's MultiAVCHD project files and modify to combine the menus (mkv make great source files).

Finally, perhaps the easiest approach is for Harmy to make a combined disc project and separate disc projects, linking to a common set of mkv source files.  If the MultiAVCHD projects are distributed along with the individual mkv files, the end user can create the final result as required, without downloading any more than they need to.

Actually DTS-MA mono assigns the audio to the center channel.  Yeah, you could work around player bugs by doing dual-channel mono--and in fact, many discs do use dual-channel mono because they re-use old mono tracks created for stereo systems with no center channel.  But mono coming from the center channel is actually better than coming from the front sides (assuming you have a surround setup and you're choosing not to upmix--how much better depends on placement), and it uses less space-on-disc, which for a lossless track is nice.  It's not a hill to die for, but I don't want the blame misplaced.

It's entirely an implementation problem.  DTS-MA mono is no more difficult to handle than any other number of channels--some designers just forgot or never knew true mono was an option.

I don't want to sound self-important, but since this thread is about my project, it may be a good idea to actually read my posts... ;-)

I thought about instead making it a BD50, but doing it as two separate discs should make the authoring much easier...

Harmy said:

@chyron: It will be mainly the extras. With the BD being one movie file only, it shouldn't be too hard to author in MultiAVCHD and then I can author the extras BD with some other software, as it won't require multiple audio options.

I got this from the Spleen (now seeding) and jumped around a bit. I'd like to say it was to check the picture and sound quality, but I really was just watching my favorite parts.

It looks fantastic, though, more solid than the AVCHD 2.1 edition, which looked great in the first place. I know I sound like a scratched record because I keep saying this, but it's true: this looks like film, and those Blu-rays do not.

hh's revised 5.1 track has a few moments where it definitely seemed more discrete (e.g. Han and Leia's conversation in the Falcon cockpit after the dogfight). Unfortunately, i's early morning here, so I can't pump up the volume the way I'd want to to do this any justice. I do like the isolated score track too

One question for Harmy: you have said that the BD version will have more lossless options since all of the special features are being moved to a separate disc (an idea I like very much). Does that mean the 85 and 93 mixes will be…? Forgive me if you've already answered this, I scrolled back several pages looking and didn't see if you had.

I'm looking forward to sitting down and watching the whole thing, but with work and my friend's wedding this weekend (I'm in the party), it may be some time before I have the chance. But once I have the chance, I'll be able to watch Star Wars the way I want to.

Thanks to everybody involved.

Though I only speak English, I have to side with accessibility on this issue.

There are more people who want to watch Star Wars spoken in their native language than there are people who have enough money to buy a big theatre-style entertainment room for their house with 7.1 surround.

I realize you crossed this out, but if you're making a disc for your own uses, why bother keeping a bunch of extra languages in? Your argument would make perfect sense for a disc that's intended for wide distribution, but unless you regularly host international viewings of Star Wars, I don't see how stripping out unneeded language dubs from a personal disc is even up for debate.

No, not me for mine. I mean if I were Harmy. I was thinking about it after I wrote that and changed my mind to a compromise rather than picking a side, hence the strikeout. I'm not Harmy, and Harmy can do what he likes. I just like the idea of the whole project being on one disc.

I can hear the other tracks just fine, but not the DTS tracks. Can you fix it?

Not to take away from the sarcasm you're due from Frink but....  ever think it might be on your end?  I can hear all the tracks just fine on mine. :)

Maybe a little more information about how you're playing it (vlc, media player, etc)

Thank you SO much for your work, Harmy!

Will there be an official AVCHD of v2.5?

Can I make my own AVCHD out of the MKV file and how do I do this most easily? Perhaps where I can select which audio tracks and subtitles to add.

Thank you again for all your hard work, Harmy. I'm still looking forward to having a copy of this on a Blu-ray disc, but for now the .mkv is a very nice present to all of us. :)

;-) Well, allow me then:

Sure, MrSmartyPants, sir, just tell me where you live and I'll be there to fix it as soon as possible... NOT!

@StarThoughts: Yes, on the BD all the English tracks and the ISO score will be lossless.

Watched the whole thing through last night and am floored by how good this looks (and sounds). I unfortunately don't have a receiver that decodes MA audio, but the core tracks are pretty good....... My aged ears have a rough time differentiating the difference anyway.

I used TSMuxer to remove the foreign tracks (since my BR player apparently only accepts 10 tracks) and now have what I consider to be the "ultimate" version of the Non-GL-F*****-Up Star Wars 77.

A couple of menus, extras, and disc burns to go and it'll be perfect. Thank you, Harmy.

Thanks a lot, my friend!

What is the choice of "target media"? I want to burn it as a DVD DL, just like v2.1.

Could use some help here :)

Hmm, I didn't know there would be issues with DTS in mono . . . but yeah, it sounds like it's probably an issue with the equipment being used to play it, not the file itself.

By the way, the DTS is not an encode of the same mono mix file that's been out there for the past few years.  In addition to splicing in the film version of the Fox fanfare to match the other mixes (the existing track took it from the soundtrack CD, but I figured this would be more authentic), it has been reduced in level by 3.2 dB so that the dialogue throughout the movie is at approximately the same level as it is in the 70mm version.  To properly calculate a digital gain change involves expanding the word length to 24 or even 32-bit precision, so I dithered the result in order to maintain quality in rendering a new 16-bit file.  So if you analyzed it in comparison to the original, it certainly wouldn't be bit-identical.

Previously I had tried to make a level-matched mono file, but the software I was using to play it back didn't do mono at the correct volume in relation to stereo, so it ended up being too low.  This time, doing it in Pro Tools, I'm quite certain of its accuracy.  The stereo mix was reduced by 2.9 dB, and the '85 by 5.7 dB (this one was really loud in the source file).  Now the dialogue is pretty much the same in all tracks and the only level differences between them are due to their relative dynamic ranges (made by mixing choices and/or format limitations), and not the average level.  So I think for the first time a truly accurate comparison of all the mixes can now be made.

I'm uploading all my new wavs for everyone, but it isn't finished yet.  I'm also thinking of doing AC3 at a couple different bitrates for possible DVD and AVCHD versions.  In the meantime if anyone is impatient and wants to encode AC3 from the existing mono file, use a DialNorm setting of -28 or it will be too loud relative to everything else.

Thanks for posting the info on converting mkv to AVCHD format. I recall the last time I tried to do something similar I was using Toast for Mac OS X. It seemed like there was some transcoding going on and I ended up cancelling it as it was taking way too long. Should that normally happen? I know .mkv is not a native BD format, so I suppose some type of conversion will be necessary, but how long are we talking here to produce a disc? Shouldn't burn time be the longest part of the process??

Which reminds mind, I am still looking for a BD burner. I have always been partial to Pioneer drives for my DVD burning in the past and have always had good luck with them, but the world of BD burning seems to filled with more complaints from all makes and models. It is hard to decide.

What drives do you guys use??

h_h: The '77 English 2.0 track is the digital one from schorman13, right?

If so, do you plan to do the same thing with schorman13's TESB digital '80 English 2.0 track and ROTJ digital '83 English 2.0 track?

Thanks for all of your hard work!

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

The 77 stereo track is definitely from schorman13 and it's definitely cleaned up where I knew flaws existed.  It's the first thing I checked ;)
