Idea: Alternate ROTJ Ending Concept

For a long time, I’ve wished that we could keep Yub Nub without keeping the “celebrate the looooooooove” ending, while still keeping the galactic tour (for larger-saga reasons). If possible, I also wanted to use the Ewok version of Yub Nub, instead of the chorus.

My little laptop isn’t so great with the video editing, but I’ve done what I could to make the audio for such a sequence. I pretty quickly realized that using the soundtrack versions of everything would mean replacing all the sound effects (crowd noises, including R2, Chewie & Lando), which I’d rather not attempt. But layering the Ewok version of Yub Nub on top of this worked pretty well, with some edits.

I chopped a section out of Victory Celebration, so that the sequence is approximately the right length. The concept is that everything proceeds as it would in the 1983 version of the film, until at some point (unfortunately this has to be music rather than visual driven) we pan up to the sky, see more the stars, and fade/wipe into the galactic tour. Spend a little time here, then return to Endor for Luke & the Ghosts to have a moment. Not sure what to do about that terrible group photo at the end, but I’m just here to work on the audio, not visuals.

If you would like to hear my concept: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3291640/AlternateROTJEnding.mp3 The actual Ewok Party starts just before the minute mark.

If you would like to create the appropriate visuals to go along with this and upload that somewhere, please do! If you’re trying to do this, but require a few adjustments be made to the audio, just let me know and we’ll do it.

I really like the concept of keeping the Yub Nub at (and to) Endor, but also having the other planets. Also, no annoying "weesa free" to make you angry... >;)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, everytime I hear the 1997 version I get this sort of image in my head.

And then I have to blow something up.

I would move the celebrations together and have no score for that other than the galaxy moaning about the new government before it even gets to the same planet as the parliament and then use the Force theme for the whole celebration thing.

Yub Nub is a bit better but, "Oh Nannoo" must be something really filthy in Ewokese going by that slightly pervy chipmunk laugh.

I simply can not wrap my head around that logic. Sure, disliking the 97' theme is perfectly acceptable. But to find it an annoying new agey type deal, and then like yub nub MORE?

It's the kind of fucking song they'd put in an after school special! If it were up to me I'd make my perfect editions of the OT, and destroy all copies containing yub nub. I like the 97' theme but I HATE yub nub.

That being said. The force theme. My god! It's PERFECT. It mirrors the scene with luke looking off into the sunset!

Again, it's like poetry, it rhymes. Except it's also a good idea.

Yub Nub is emotionally less saccharine. it's straight up honest syrup.

I really love the '97 celebration, but I've never felt that it fit the Ewok celebration visuals all that well. It wasn't until I heard the Ewok-voice version of Yub Nub that I realized how good Yub Nub could be...but it's inappropriate for the Galactic Celebration visuals and the ending is so bad.

So...this.

And Bingo's criticism of the 97 Victory Celebration music is spot on.

Unfortunately, the Force theme is a little too slow and mournful.

Does the opposite exist a human choir English lyric of "Celebrate The Love"?

Freedom
we got freedom
and now that we can be free
come on and celebrate
Power
we got power
and now that we can be free
it's time to celebrate
Celebrate the freedom
celebrate the power
celebrate the glory
celebrate the love
Power
we got power
and now that we can be free
it's time to celebrate
Celebrate the light (freedom!)
celebrate the night (power!)
celebrate the fight (glory!)
celebrate the love
celebrate the love
celebrate the love
Glory
we found glory
the power showed us the light
and now we all live free
Celebrate the love

The Ewok version still sounds a bit too human to me.

Ideally Yub Nub would be in place as simply source music - it's a little silly but it makes more sense for the Ewoks to play that than the Victory Celebration. We would see the Endor party with Yub Nub then we would transition into the force theme, see the galactic celebrations, then Luke burning Vader would be the final shot.

A more radical version would have the funeral after the Ewok celebration but before the other celebrations, then when we go to Endor and see Luke fly away into space as the force theme swells into the end credits.

Did somebody say there was a version of Yub Nub without lyrics? A musical rendition might be an interesting compromise between OOT and SE endings.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I think so too. It is inconceivable that the Ewoks would have sung the Victory Celebration song.

Personally I do not understand how you couldn't find the 1997 music edition far superior. It was even made by John Williams!

The origin of the Victory Celebration was shown a few years ago when an animatic was leaked (or officially released?) that showed the concept for how the new ending in the 1997 SE version was going to be made. As its soundtrack, it had the theme from "500 Nations", which is a documentary about native north-americans' history.

There are some really obvious similarities from this song to the "Victory Celebration" that John Williams was asked to compose.

If I could find it now, I would have posted the concept video itself. It is on "Deleted Magic". 2008 thread.

True, although Williams has certainly worked that way before (see: most of A New Hope)

I just put the Ewokese lyrics into Babel fish.

Ha! So where in the world did you find the ewokese lyrics?

Sadly...yes.

Oh.

Your.

Gods.

That's hard to watch and hear. Truly cringe inducing.

Loved the cheers when Sebastian shows up though!

It's actually not that bad.

Given to the right gospel choir it could even become a standard of the genre.

The lyrics are very dodgy though considering they have just overthrown a despotic regime and are going on about power and celebrating fighting.

If it was being sung in the capital as an independence song it wouldn't be too bad.

It's the sort of nonsense I can imagine a militia marching to while tapping on drums and blowing horns.

Meanwhile...

An amazing saga coming to a close with a teddy bear picnic and a white gospel choir vocalizing about celebrating love is worse than bad!

Not everyone thinks Star Wars is an amazing saga...

This is why we view the films differently...

While I admit that Star Wars fits the literary archetype of the epic journey (a.k.a., the hero's journey), I fail to see its value as anything more than a three-part morality tale with great characters, creatures, and Jim Henson Muppet-monsters. What I'm trying to say is that I, personally, take more away from the Jabba the Hutt scenes at the beginning of ROTJ -- filled with the laughter of Salacious B. Crumb -- than I do from watching Darth Vader's internal struggle when deciding whether or not to save his son from the hands of the emperor.

Don't get me wrong: I certainly enjoy the more serious aspects of the films, but what I most look forward to is Lapti Nek in ROTJ, not the Battle of Hoth in TESB.

I understand how you view the films and see why Yub Nub doesn't meet your expectations. Considering my POV, do you see why it exceeds mine?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

But only ROTJ is really full of Jim Henson muppet monsters. I'm assuming ROTJ is your favorite then, and that would explain why you don't mind (rather like), the childish Ewok celebration, which would no doubt feel out of place in either of the other two OT films. While the scene might fight perfectly in ROTJ as the most suited ending, it's annoying to see it as an end to a saga that was once much more.
