Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released) — Page 381

Welcome!

Yes, v2.5 is only for "Episode 4" aka "Star Wars", at least for now, as Harmy has already started working on Empire's v2.0. SW 2.5 is already rendered, we are waiting for some audio tracks made by hairy_hen, who hasn't access to internet at the moment so he can't upload them, for now.

Yeah, 2.5 that's being discussed here is for Episode 4, he plans to revisit the rest of the Trilogy in order, bringing them all up to version 2.x (meaning Blu-ray sourced, as opposed to the HDTV source of version 1).  If you can't wait, 2.1, which is already available, has basically all the improvements that'll be available from 2.5 (just lower bitrate, but burnable to a DVD-9).

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Yes, I was going to grab the 2.1 version until I read a little further down that 2.5 is so close to completion, but I'm not looking to acquire a Blu-Ray version - just something hi-def (720) to stream to my TV.

So, I should just go ahead and grab 2.1 then?

If you can't wait a few days, yes. It's definitely worth it.

Cool!  I think I'll go ahead and grab it then grab 2.5 when it comes out as well.

I've just asked for a Spleen invite in the appropriate forum so I'm just waiting on that currently.

Thanks for the updates, guys!

I'm not sure if there will be an AVCHD version of 2.5, so it is nice to have the 2.1 as it is easy (and cheap) to burn, share and watch straight off of a stand-alone Blu-ray player.  By the way, if you're just going to stream it, the .MKV of 2.5, being one complete file, might work better for your purpose.

Thanks... that's actually even worse. Fixed that. :)

Actually the muxer (tsmuxer or mkvmerge) just converts the SRT files into a BD-SUP file on-the-fly and you never see it, so the muxer is the software creating a bad BD-SUP file.  No problem though--you can just demux the results to get the actual BD-SUP file it created.  Then import/export the file in BDSupEdit, and then remux the whole thing again, only this time mux your fixed BD-SUP file instead of the SRT file.

Er, I think... ;)

Tried that, to no avail. But I found the culprit: It's VLC! Tried to play the muxed file with Media Player Classic. It shows the subtitles just fine. No need to edit them with BDSupEdit. The problem with the lines, that wouldn't fit on the screen, is solved too. The default font size in tsmuxer is too big. Changed it to a smaller one before muxing and it's fine (duh me!).

Yes!  That sounds exactly like what I'm looking for.  I'll search on Spleen once I can get in.  :)

MPC and hardware players tend to work fine on subtitles with the single-frame-flash problem, so this was only ever a VLC-specific fix.  Sorry it didn't work, though.

Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)

I am concerned at whether or not my effort at contributing to the "Sources" documentary sub-project is of legitimate value.  Yes, there is some desirability to having a neatly packaged single .mkv file with neatly labeled and current subs (sourced from the collaborative efforts of HanDuet and several others in their "Sources Documentary - Current .srt Subtitle List"), but…

My concerns here are primarily two fold:

1) As HanDuet indicated, the "Sources Documentary - Current .srt Subtitle List" is a moving target currently receiving contributions and feedback that (hopefully) will result in a more refined and broad final product that Harmy could then mux into his "Sources" documentary clip for the v2.5 Blu-ray release.

2) I have personally experienced issues using the default Charset values when muxing in Mkvtoolnix…so, I am concerned at the potential for a muxed language sub track displaying garbage characters NOT present in the original .srt file.  [This may or may not be the case with German subs issues earlier indicated by Laserschwert and deho, but from a troubleshooting standpoint…it just makes sense to systematically identify and isolate potential causes.]

The small, independent structure of using and testing the EXTERNAL .srt's (as maintained by HanDuet) until such time as their inclusion in v2.5 makes perfect sense to me…and while well intended, I don't think there's any inherent value in further maintaining a parallel muxed version (and at 700mb a download), AT LEAST until the v2.5 release.  IF Harmy doesn't release a stand-alone muxed "Sources" documentary (to compliment the DVD9 or .mkv format release of v2.5), then I think that might be the good time to re-visit a stand-alone muxed version release of "Sources" to include the fruits of HanDuet's sub-project efforts at that point.

For anyone less familiar with how to use EXTERNAL subs, all you need is your video source (for which I have provided unaltered, full-resolution mirrors of Harmy's "Sources" documentary HERE)…rename your desired sub file (see HanDuet's updated posts for the latest) to be the SAME as the video source (before the dot extension part) and make sure that it's located in the SAME folder/directory as the video source…then simply open the video source using VLC (or similar).

Kind regards,

-A.S.

I have Harmy's releases and love them. What is the difference between these and the Team Blu releases?

I have muxed the German srt files with the documentary using the latest version of mkvmerge (with default settings) and ran into zero problems. All characters were displayed correctly. So the German and English subtitles should be ok, I have no idea about the French, Spanish and Polish versions though.

I think it would be best to wait for the final versions of all the subtitle files and then mux it again and provide a download link for everyone who isn't interested in getting Harmy's upcoming Blu-ray, but just the mkv of SW DeEd 2.5.

@Laserschwert: New and improved translations are always welcome. Sorry I wasn't able to check the quality of subtitles in languages for which I'm not fluent.

@deho: If you and/or Laserschwert decide to create new German subtitles, just let me know by PM. Don't worry. that doesn't mean the current version will go to waste; it means that German speakers had access to a workable (although imperfect) translation until an improved version was completed.

@A_New_Hope: I agree with you. The subtitles are frequently updating, so we should wait until we're confident in having the "final version" of all translations until muxing them together the video.

Keep those updates coming!

BOTH Harmy's Despecialized Edition releases and the Team Blu releases are driving at the same thing:  Providing the closest and BEST quality theatrical version experience of the OOT (Original Original Trilogy).

The primary difference is in their methodology:

Harmy's DE version draws upon a wide variety of multiple sources.  An upside to this approach is his ability to draw from the BEST source(s) available for any given scene, BUT while damn close, the resulting product is NOT a 100% exact OOT experience.  (See Harmy's brief "Sources" documentary available HERE for more on this.)

Team Blu's OOT releases are 100% sourced from the 2006 GOUT bonus discs, the result is a 100% exact OOT version, lovingly and masterfully color corrected and with amazing results…but the GOUT source is very much substandard and despite Team Blu's best efforts, there is only so much magic that can be produced using GOUT exclusively for their video.  (See THIS POST and a few posts beyond it for a little more detail.)

There are other similar projects, but these are two of the most prominent recent efforts…and (IMHO) they are both "must have" preservations! ;)

@deho:  Specifically, I had 100% verified display issues with johnlocke2342's "Sources-Doc_French_edit3.srt" using the default Charset value in Mkvtoolnix 6.2.0 for Mac (and needed to select ISO 8859-1 instead to properly display special French characters).  While I did test and attempt to verify all the language tracks in the two fully muxed products that I earlier ULed, my lack of familiarity and fluency combined with clearly visible issues with the French subs (which otherwise displayed fine as external subs in VLC) lead to my lack of confidence in an otherwise stellar Mkvtoolnix application.  I am not sure if this is a bug that I should report in the application, or if there is some other reason for the issue I experienced (at least) with muxing edit3 of the French subs.

@HanDuet and deho:  Yeah, I agree…waiting for Harmy's imminent v2.5 release on Blu-ray for a revised stand-alone muxed "Sources" documentary video (using whatever "finalized" subs are available at that point) is the best course of action.  Until then, HanDuet's established EXTERNAL subs release strategy looks like a clear winner to me! ;)

I've waited years for this. I had great hopes for the internet in that respect but I didn't think someone has the patience and the resources for something as extensive as this.

Thank you so much!

It was my understanding that simply muxing srt subs to mkv retains them as text objects and are thus dependent in their appearance and presentation on the renderer used in the player and its default handling (ie font style, colour, size and positioning).  I don't think muxers usually change or convert text objects:  this requires other software.

External srt subs are useful in that they can often be played along with an mkv, although only a single instance is allowed which must be named the same as the mkv file.  Being external they can be readily edited for changes.  Muxing srt into an mkv file allows multiple subtitles to be incorporated and any forced subtitle identified, but it is up to the player to permit selection and the honouring of forced attributes.  Editing of muxed srt subs requires demuxing and remuxing:  a reasonably simple process, but more complex than simply using external subs.

If one wants consistent subtitle presentation regardless of renderer and a specific font style, colour, size and position, then graphic based subtitles are required (specifically PGS for Bluray standard).  These can not be as readily edited as srt subs and are therefore desirable once the subtitles have been finalised and require no more changes.  I understand EasySup and GoSup are freeware for converting srt subs to PGS.

BDsup2sub is freeware that permits modifying characteristics of graphic subtitles (scaling, positioning, palette, etc) but can not edit the text itself.

I am unsure whether Harmy intends to use a specific font style, size, colour and positioning for subtitles, but if so then PGS subtitles are the solution for the Bluray.  Whether these PGS subtitles are included in the mkv is a different matter, however it is quite easy to mux standalone PGS or srt files into an mkv with mkvmerge and so these files could be supplied individually and independently of the mkv.

An mkv makes a very good pre-container for a Bluray since software such as ClownBD can convert mkv to Bluray structure quite easily, plus the mkv is effectively presented as the final Bluray (apart from menus) in players which support it.

There's no format change when you put a subtitle stream into an mkv.

It's strictly tsmuxergui that creates a PGS stream from text when you create an M2TS, wasn't aware we were talking about MKV.

EDIT:

By the way, I've muxed [the subtitles] with mkvmerge and the resulting mkv played just fine and the subtitles were ok. Then I tried to mux it with tsmuxer, to create a Blu-ray folder structure, but vlc wouldn't display the subtitles correctly, no matter which edit I use. Are you aware of this problem?

Actually, we were talking about M2TS, not MKV. So yeah, tsmuxer creates a PGS stream on-the-fly from text, and that PGS stream is the one flickering.  I've seen something like this before and fixed it, but apparently this is a different situation because my fix didn't work.

Right:  didn't know TSmuxer could create PGS on-the-fly.

Have you tried something like GoSup to create PGS from srt, or passed the PGS through BDsup2sub?

Since 720p24 is not a usual Bluray resolution, maybe TSmuxer is automatically changing the framerate for the subtitle to its nearest supported value.

Well, it's deho creating the files, not me.  Yeah, I use easySUP myself, but it uses an old version of BDSup2Sub which has the flashing frame problem on VLC.  This is no big deal though because this issue CAN be fixed using BDSupEdit and then everything works everywhere.  TSMuxer should work though--a mismatched frame rate would result in a noticeable sync drift, and I've never seen that.  Again, we're only talking about a problem with VLC playback--hardware devices and MPC are fine, so deploying with the bug would be fine (we're only talking featurette subtitles--subtitles for the film itself do not have this problem).  No idea why the fix for easySUP doesn't apply to TSMuxer since it really does seem to be the same issue.

Well, weirdly the bug was fixed for a while by simply muxing the subs into the mkv. But it started acting up again.
