Bill Pertwee 86.
I suppose most people will remember him from Dad's Army pictured above but my father introduced me to Round The Horne at a very early age and they're all gone now including my dad.
His passing is very sad indeed, a great loss for the world of cinema, but at least it will prompt me to finally see one of his movies. I'm aware of his work, but I've only seen clips until now.

Massive respect. The man was a comedy legend. Rest in peace.
Gutted, just seen the news about Mel Smith on t'web. As a kid I used to watch my VHS of 'Not The Nine O'Clock News' almost as much as Star Wars. Going to go get my DVD out now and watch gems like this...

Very sorry to hear about this passing.
I'll never forget this one.

How did I miss this. :( Another one of the few great remaining American writers gone.
I Am Legend is one of my all time favorite books. It is genuinely unsettling, is a fun demythologization of the vampire legends, and it has a really great twist ending. A great short read that will give you chills.
George Romero is considered the father of the zombie genre we have today, and has admitted numerous times that the inspiration for his zombies was the original film adaption of I Am Legend 1964's The Last Man on Earth. Out of the three films based on I Am Legend, it is the only one that actually follows the plot of the book, however it changes the hoards from vampires into unspecified reanimated corpses. The very idea of some kind of infection reanimating the dead began with Matheson's I Am Legend.
This man was the grandfather of the zombie genre, and he wrote some really great and thought provoking stuff.
R.I.P.
For anyone who has never read anything by Richard Matheson, the short story Born of Man and Woman might take you the better part of 10 - 15 minutes to read, if that, but you may just find it lingering in your mind for the next several days.
JEDIT: Oh yeah, and he also wrote:
Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, the Twilight Zone episode about the gremlin on the wing of the plane, which was later parodied by The Simpsons, and also remade for the 1980's Twilight Zone movie.
Duel, a 1971 film directed by Steven Spielberg about a demonic tanker truck stalking a single motorist for the duration of the film. Great fun.
He also wrote an episode of Star Trek TOS, The Enemy Within.
that was very good episode of Star Trek indeed.

Surprised to hear of Mel's death; he wasn't that old and I hadn't realised he'd been ill.
Responsible for some great comedy; I want to go and watch Morons From Outer Space and Wilt now.
A few weeks ago I was searching for a Smith and Jones sketch on Youtube but had no luck. It was on the set of a horror movie, and Smith and Jones were extras (who do you play? I'm "man with axe through head"). Part of the sketch went something like this (from memory):
- "Have you done this before?"
- "Yes, I was in Star Wars, I was a stormtrooper, the one going like this" [waves arms around]
- "That's interesting, I'll have to look out for that"
- "Oh it's not in, they cut me out"
- "Why?"
- "Well it looked stupid didn't it, a stormtrooper going like this" [waves arms around again]
Anyone else remember this, or can find a clip?

I'm afraid not. I remember him as the security guard in The Young ones University Challenge piss take. "Bacon sandwich, funny name for a ferret?"

J.J. Cale 77.
(Didn't just die but) was watching 'Galaxy Quest' and recognised Robin David Sachs' voice as Sarris. Looked him up on Wikipedia and he died in February. Depresses me everytime I read another one of Babylon 5's cast has died.
Hey God! What did the actors from B5 do to you apart from inspire, delight and educate a generation of young SF fans!?!?
Soon gonna be easier to list the cast members from B5 that are still alive :-( I could understand half the cast being dead if it was sci-fi show from the 50s but it's only frickin' 15 years old for god sake
btw He was in 'Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic' too.
I'm gonna go down a bottle of Brivari in his and the rest of the cast's honour... (With a Jovian Sunspot chaser)

This year sucks. I lost Slim Whitman and JJ Cale in a short period of time. The people in my music collection that are still alive make a small number.
JJ Cale is probably the most ripped of musician of the 70's.
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Yeah Ryan... Robin Sach's shuttle leaving for the last great hope for peace was noted back at the time of take off :-(
Kang and Kane? Damn...
Where were you in '77?
Karen Black 74.
Nobody could act terrified by a Zuni Fetish Warrior doll like her.
This movie scared the crap out of me when I was little. And it was made for tv!
