Well, to be fair, in terms of colors they may be mistakes made by me, that weren't in the original. In this case though, the background in the scene, where Luke cleans R2 isn't too green at all, in fact in direct comparison, the I.B. reference is even greener.

"As a student of English linguistics, I can explain this phonological phenomenon quite thoroughly - it is called linking and it causes the speaker to link the words ending in a consonant with words beginning in a vowel - in this case the normally unstressed "D" sound at the end of "find" gets linked with the schwa sound standing for the indefinite article "a" in fluid speech and together they create a sound which is one of the ways of pronouncing the definite article "the" in English. I hope that explains it :-)"

Kudos for that. I myself am a TEFL teacher, graduated in linguistics. And now for 'linking-"R"'s :)

Interesting, I do wonder why you fixed it for when he walked through that doorway, though.  Did the IB print lessen in greeness as the scene progressed?

(Also, one reason I am picking on that scene in particular is that somewhere I swear I saw you refer to fixing that color timing on purpose for when he walked through the doorway.  I wouldn't have likely noticed the shift away from green if you hadn't pointed it out.)

I don't remember that; all I can tell you is that I'm looking at that shot and it looks pretty much identical except for R2's blue panels in both v2.0 and v2.1 and I don't see anything that needs fixing in it either.

When I get home, I can look up the times which what I'm seeing occurs, so we can be sure we're on the same page.  It is not a showstopper, but it is weird that it got fixed in one part of a scene but not another.

Make sure you do, because I'm very curious what you're actually talking about.

Harmy about those Bluray menus can we get a preview? I liked the ones Adywan made for his project

Okay, looking back at the 2.1 I feel a bit like an ass now for bothering you so much about it...  If there is an issue (which I can't see as well now as I thought I could before) it would be at 22:12 through to just before he actually pops off R2's restraining bolt.  I think what I was seeing was a slightly different exposure on that doorway area, it looked a bit greener than the scenes around it, it probably isn't really a problem.

Yeah, I thought you must be remembering something wrong. I'm glad we sorted it out :-)

@Michael:
I have nothing to show you beyond what's already been shown before, since I can't really start properly working on the BD structure until I have all the assets ready.

That part looks a little more green/awkward on my projector than it does on this laptop, but that goes to show it might just be the setup (or the sheer size of the questionable area on it, lol).  Anyway, thanks for entertaining my concern; I look forward to seeing 2.5 in all its glory, and going on to righting Empire and Jedi!

And after all of that, by randomly thinking quickly about the hilarity that is Lobsterman from the SE color timing, I suddenly remembered where I saw that Luke/R2 scene's coloring talked about.  http://savestarwars.com/specialeditionfail.html

That's what I thought I saw a bit of sneaking through.  But again, it is probably a non-issue, I just couldn't believe it all came back to me so suddenly.

Seriously? I say that v2.5 is finally rendered (it took two days during which I was virtually unable to use my computer for anything else) and you guys start nitpicking v2.1 now? No f*cking way :-D

LOL. ...seriously though, that is f*cking great news :)

Hopefully the audio work is also nearly ready. Can't believe the other wealth of good contributions here too, like all the subtitles. Too cool!

The audio tracks are basically done.  I want to test them some more to make sure there aren't any problems, but there isn't really any actual work left to be done on them at this point, assuming I did everything correctly.

Harmy, question: when you tested importing TrueHD into your Bluray authoring software, how did it want this to be done?  Did it ask for both the MLP and AC3 files separately, or were they still interleaved when you took them off the source disc?  As far as I can make out, when making an MKV file it's okay if the two are on different tracks, but in Bluray format they have to be muxed together, so hopefully the program is capable of combining them, since the Dolby encoder will only provide them as separate files.

The reason for them being combined is for the sake of backwards compatibility: with an HDMI or multichannel analogue connection the lossless audio will be used, while bitstreaming over S/PDIF uses the 'hidden' Dolby Digital track automatically, ensuring that no one will be left without the ability to hear the program.  In this way it somewhat resembles the DTS 'core' scheme; the difference being that in Dolby's version the two tracks are unrelated and not dependent on each other.  With only one output file instead of two, HD MA is no doubt generally easier to use from an authoring perspective, but I do think that TrueHD will be worth it since there is more Dolby-capable equipment out there.  (I'm able to encode in both formats, so if I'm wrong and it doesn't work for some reason, DTS will be provided.)

Darth Real Life requires that I go out of town for the next few days, but once I get back I should be all set to encode and upload everything.  This isn't a frivolous journey—it's a conference of audio professionals which is being hosted by one of my teachers, who owns a recording studio and in every way is an extremely knowledgeable and awesome guy.  I learned so much stuff from him this past year, and now to get school credit for meeting with his friends in the industry and hearing their views on audio . . . well, for someone like me that's a very exciting prospect.  ;)

Well, the TrueHD extracted from the disc as a single 2GB file with ac3 extension using TSMuxer and that's what I imported into Encore.

Glad to hear 2.5 is finished rendering. I know rendering is very time consuming. Nice to hear everything is coming along for you.

I think we need to keep in mind that SWDE is a lossy version of the original video, so perhaps we should not be too concerned about lossy soundtracks to accompany it.

It is also important to understand where the audio source originates from:  if there has been any lossy compression or conversion used anywhere in it's history, then using lossless compression for the final version is not going to restore quality that has already been lost:  the best it can do is retain the quality that is there.  However, I understand that a high enough bitrate lossy compression  will sound indistinguishable to most ears from a lossless compression depending on the acoustic properties of the source.

Quite frankly, for stereo soundtracks obtained from laserdisc I doubt anyone would notice a difference between DD 640 and TrueHD.

In terms of authoring a Bluray, I actually think it would be preferable to have the extras on a separate disc:  this relaxes any constraints on the movie itself.  When you do this, you no longer really need menus for the movie itself (nice to have, yes).

Once freed from menus on the movie, it is very easy to convert an mkv and whatever combination of soundtracks one desires into Bluray format using TSmuxer.

For myself, I will be sticking with mkv for the movie anyway, as I find menus too restrictive.  However, I like the idea of a menu driven extras disc.

I want to congratulate Harmy on an incredible job, finally being able to see a version of Star Wars that lived up to my expectations, and that I can enjoy. Thank you so much!

I just registered (after about six months of lurking!) to second this. I have 2.1 and it's fantastic. Thanks so much Harmy for this excellent version :)

Eac3to will decode a plain MLP soundtrack into DD and interleave it with the MLP.  I'm not sure if it can take separate MLP and DD soundtracks and interleave them.

I think DTS is less popular in hardware because of the licensing requirements, yet more popular with the studios because full resolution playback of copies (not original discs in compliant players) is harder.

As an open source format with similar lossless encoding size as TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, multi-channel FLAC would be the ideal format for all audio.  Of course this is the antithesis of what the studios want and so it is not generally supported in players.

FLAC offered along with the MKV would work pretty well, though.  (Note, I'm not saying it should be in the MKV, but an option for us to mux in.)

That's just awesome! The pilot's skin looks so pale, and his eyes so black, empty and uncaring, that it actually makes him feel LESS human and more frightening.

I think it's just jpeg compression to the extreme.
