A movie that if I can put my baggage aside, still plays pretty well.

I just wish it was better. And longer. And had a good villain. And was more tightly plotted. And more developed. But I digress. ;)

The LD transfer is like the badass older brother of the old VHS; natural color, slightly washed out analog-ish look,  proper scope framing. It's not as good as the others, but is older by a few years.

The audio again is the reason to own a copy. Despite only being Dolby Stereo, this is a POWERHOUSE of detail. Very extended high end range yet still natural. Satisfying and bests the DVD 5.1 but not quite as fun as Temple. Original panning/sound design intact.

A begrudging 3.5 balls out of 4 for what is there if only suggested. This should have been a better picture.

In 2010 I came home from work one day, my girlfriend grabbed my arm and told me I was taking her to see Kick-Ass. She had a pretty high gravity job, went through moods, and at times it was hard to talk her into going out for anything other than alcohol. I don't remember much of the movie, but I remember we had fun that evening. She definitely seemed to enjoy the movie more than I did, and it was nice to see her have a good time.

Super (2010)

A few months after the theatrical release of Kick-Ass, Super premiered at the Toronto film festival, then several months later, now a whole year after Kick-Ass, it saw theatrical release. Kick-Ass is the film I saw in theaters, and Super is the film I wish I had bothered to see in theaters. The two films appear very similar in style, marketing, and content, but when in comes down to it, silly costumes and over the top violence are the only things they have in common. It was hard to watch the trailers for Super without thinking Didn't I just pay to go see a movie just like that a few months ago?

Super isn't even a hero movie, it is more about a guy who has been constantly screwed over his whole life going on a killing spree with the somewhat honorable goal of rescuing his runaway junkie wife, and just happens to chose the guise of a super hero to don while doing so. It is a really dark movie, but yet somehow really funny. Starring Rainn Wilson, I expected it to be more straight up silly comedy, than the darker more serious story it actually told.

On my way home from work earlier and dropped in on a friend i havent seen in a while to see how he's been. We cracked open a beer and was sitting in his garden chatting when his phone rings and he gets up and disappears into his house to chat. Anyway, I wandered into his front room to just to see what was on the TV (which was on) and noticed his DVD collection. Looking through I came across this, which I haven't seen in a gazillion years! It's now been well and truly borrowed by yours truly! ;)

It's funny, but I don't have that movie right now, as it's the only one of mine being lent out to a friend. It's interesting what audiences latch on to, seeing as this is so similar in feel to the beginning of the Matrix, and came out a year before the Matrix.

The best part of the movie is how the detective keeps saying that our hero doesn't strike him as a murderer, when that's exactly how he strikes me.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

It is a cult classic. And your right, the film is very similar to the beginning of the Matrix. Like I said, I haven't watched it in years but always recall loving it the first time I saw it. Great cast too. Richard O'Brien has always been a favourite.

Hard Candy (2005)

I've heard a lot about this movie, mostly negative things, but it seemed intriguing. Watching Super, which featured Ellen Page, last night reminded me I had been meaning to watch this.

Over all, it was a pretty worthless movie, though perhaps an interesting psychological experiment: Do you feel sympathy for the man undergoing torture even after child pornography and a photo of the missing girl are found in his possession? Or do you gleefully root for the crazy teenager and the sick things she is doing to this man?

Overall, I am glad I watched it, though I will probably never watch it again.

Dark City Director's Cut (1998)

Picked this up on a buy 1 get 2 free blu-ray sale a few months ago. Had never seen any version of the film before. Perhaps if I had seen this back in 1998, I would have thought a lot more of it, but for me it fell kind of flat. It had an engaging story, pretty visuals, and Jennifer Connelly. Yet somehow overall it did not manage to pull me in or make me really care much about what was happening.

Oh well, it isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. But if you'd seen it around the time period it was released, you more than likely would have a higher opinion of it. (I think?) shrug.

I thought it was interesting that The Matrix used sets left over from Dark City.

DC's big plot surprise blew my mind more than The Matrix did.

Jurassic Park

Still holds up. Even the effects. I'm sure ILM looks at it now and says "WE COULD DO SO MUCH BETTER", but thankfully Spielberg holds them back.

Pacific Rim

The anime robots vs monster movie we've always wanted, come to life. Is it perfect? Of course not. Is it fun? Very.

Dark City is a great forgotten movie that really plays with your head. I never really minded the Theatrical cut, and though the Director's Cut is better it has far too many CGI tweaks and a different color timing.

In short; matted theatrical widescreen, full CAV, greatly improved sound fidelity over puny ac3.

All equals: :D

MOTP is probably the best Batman film. And what a score! (I liked that a Batman centered episode of Justice League referred back to it without explaining it. That's trusting in your audience.)  I need to spin my LD sometime when the house is back in order!

Since I don't think we have a general "coming soon" thread, this looks like it might actually be good...

I really liked Dark City, and I only saw it about a year ago.

Yeah it's a good film. Had you been unaware of it up until a year ago, or had you just never got around to watching it? Just asking.

I liked Dark City enough to consider making it a prequel of sorts to Star Wars in my personal canon.

I should rewatch it, though, but make it the director's cut this time around.

"Pacific Rim"

Cliche ridden, predictable, over the top, yet I enjoyed myself.

If you enjoy Godzilla movies and cheesy low budget movies like Robot Jox, then you just might have yourself a good time. Don't expect anything cerebral, or scientifically enlightening.  It's more like a Roland Emmerich style film.

As i was was waiting for anything near positive feedback on that one...Got a spanning spine set of all the Godzilla DVD's, and i will no doubt be a slut to the new Godzilla filum.

"Pacific Rim" has a blatant stylistic nod to "Blade Runner".  One that I quite enjoyed.

Tried to give Silver Linings Playbook a watch a few days ago and had to bail after about 30 minutes.  I hate shaky-cam documentary-style camera work.  If you want me to watch your story, don't make me work to follow it around the screen.  It's annoying to me and lazy on the part of the director.

If that's the case, you want to try giving a British film called 'Outlaw' a whirl. It's unwatchable due to the shaky-cam. Gives you a headache.

Bob Munkhouse, and Shaun "flick it" Bean, and Danny Dieorea where in that one. I kinda liked it.

There should be editing software that stabilizes the image of handheld shakeycam video. They could be as low-budget and lazy as they want.
