Heck just borrow some of Dee Bradley Baker's lines from the Clone Wars and be done with it! :p

Also makes me wonder when the new Rebels series comes out whether we'll see the transition from Clone Trooper to Stormtrooper, but that's a topic to be discussed elsewhere.

Talking storm troopers are more dangerous

As promised I did a mock-up of some storm trooper dialogue put in to stop the storm troopers in Empire Strikes Back from being mute.

Ideally some new lines of dialogue would be better but to show you what I mean and to keep some continuity I thought it was a good idea so I did it. I am not suggesting anything should be done of this nature for revisited but I would really like to see them talk again, and if they did in revisited well it would be great this video is a window to what could be perhaps.

weather or not you like it or hate it as a mock up, is not the point it's that at least for me they don't say a word and and I like some of it myself and am unsure also on some of what I did but it's more a demonstration than 100% solid suggestion.

Enjoy and discuss if you like, the link is below

password = blast them

Just checked it out and I loved it.  Now what makes this so great is that it would be easy to add an alternate audio track with or without the stormtrooper comments.  I can go either way, as the silent troopers was the way EMPIRE always was.. but this added a bit of life to it too (I even loved the "do you know what's going on?" moment, as you know that's what one of them would say).

I say when EMPIRE:R comes out, Ronster, go ahead and create a modified audio track with the stormtrooper audio.  One can then use MKVmerge to add it to their existing E:R and have the choice.

I think the only ST comment I would take out would be the ones prepping Han for torture (they would probably keep quiet for no other reason than to just not do anything that could get Vader's attention), as well as the "right" response at 2:25 after the first trooper says "Follow me!" (even that line I could see taken out, as the trooper already said "load your weapons", thus they're all alerted and already know what they need to do).

Also consider using audio modulation to maybe make some of the ST voices a bit lower, just to vary the audio responses.

For the most part I liked the ST dialogue, but unlike Monroville I really hated the "Do you know what's going on?" one. To me, it's EXACTLY what a PT battle droid would say in that moment.

These are soldiers so I wouldn't have them chattering, or sharing their thoughts in front of an officer just as a low rank soldier wouldn't do it IRL. Besides, they are merely bodyguards here escorting Leia, etc. Better keep them quiet.

The other one that doesn't work at all is the one blasting 3PO. At that point in the movie, the audience has absolutely no idea that the Empire is already there and in cahoots with Lando. We know Fett followed them, but not that Lando is about to betray them. That is a huge reveal when the doors open to show Vader. Hearing so clearly a Stormtrooper shooting 3PO would undermine the reveal greatly. I think that's why they specificaly went with a non-stormtrooper comlink voice for that one, and it works much better the way it is IMO.

Aslo agreed with them better not talking during the Han torture. But the one-word responses actually DO work quite well IMO like the one on the AT-AT or "stop that ship!" or when Luke is following them. :)

Maybe some scenes could use a "comment" from one or two Stormies, but an the whole, I would leave them silent, that makes them a quiet, brooding force, that is only unleashed by their "master" Darth Vader ;-)

The only audio issue I got, is to have Boba Fett talking in his original voice - it is kind of strange to hear "Jango", I always liked that raspy old tone, combined with the spur sound (though he obvious got none) to mirror a Eastwood/VanCleef bountyhunter guy ...

@monroville the radio chatter which does occur is another cock up...

I pointed it out earlier....

Luke to wedge " i lost my rear gunner you'll have to take the shot"

Radio chatter luke to wedge in wedge cockpit " i'll cover you"

Luke "set your harpoon and follow me on the next pass"

How will luke cover wedge if wedge is following and he has lost rear gunner?

If luke said i'll follow you it would make sense...

Also bear in mind this is the cockpit shot where it looks as if the snowspeeder will hit a rebel running away from smoke...

Basically i called for a cut or alternate exterior shot on this but to remove i'll cover you line as then the dialogue also makes sense... Luke says i'll cover you again moments later so another good reason for the chop i felt

The rear 'gunner' is the one that fires the tow cable harpoon gun. Luke is saying he's going to cover Wedge (with his speeder's forward facing lasers that he can fire), while Wedge concentrates on tripping the ATAT. It makes perfect sense.

I think I have read into this inaccurately now and ignored a keyword in the sentence being "Next"

Luke " i'll cover you"

"set your harpoon and follow me on the next pass"

meaning that he is covering him at that moment on the next pass they will switch positions and Luke will fly point.

So I retract this and my bad although i was originally drawn to the shot because of the visuals not the dialogue.. The scale on the shot seems wrong and that wedge cockpit looks as though he will crash into a rebel running from the trenches..

But the dialogue does make sense and I admit I made a mistake

apologies 005 and metalmunkie you are right!

As far as the trooper dialogue goes, I wouldn't use the "Do you know what's going on" but I'll have to say it was pretty funny.

Ones to keep:

1. "Yes Sir" - inside AT-AT

2. Modified version of "Stop that ship" - SOMETHING would be nice there. Somebody said soldiers don't talk during the heat of battle and that's wrong. They're yelling commands and tactics the whole time if it's a fluid battle.

3. Modified version of "Follow Me" - When he shoves Leia something like "Move it" would work for me. Perhaps another "I said MOVE IT" when they're trying to pull Leia inside the door.

4. "It's them" - But I'd move this to the first trooper that got shot instead.

5. "Blast them" - But move to the instant before R2 blasts his smoke. A trooper waves his arms for the others to move forward. Right there would work with the body language.

I know Ady probably won't use any of these ideas but: Maybe some "Uhgs" and "Arghs" when troopers are shot. They have always seemed like target dummies in ESB and ROTJ. It'd be nice to beef up their collective character a little. If not for the official audio then certainly for an alternate one. I like these ideas for a more liberal edit.

Ady teasing the probe droid score was what made me want an alternate Audio track...

It's Black or White when it comes to either re-scoring or altering audio and I appreciate people have differing views on this and may scream about an audio change and accept a visual change more readily.

The Audio changes in the first post change list are a "given" or almost mandatory decisions that I personally wholeheartedly agree with and I can only imagine that there is someone out there that would argue that the new special edition Boba Fett voice sounds better or the "bring my shuttle line" is inferior to the new one..

So those are not really an issue but when the probe droid score came on with the new scene... It worked so well that I now struggle to see that without the music. Although I am not sure on the fleet grouping should be as in the original film or the new version this I am a bit torn on.

Probe Droid score = 100% for it

fleet grouping = 50/50 (when sound effects are added for the ties and Vader breathing this could actually sound fully amazing and be 100% for it)

But this adds weight to an alternative audio track for the very reason that some will simply reject an audio change while others will embrace them and more so than visuals which is a bit strange as most of our perception is visual.

Certainly an interesting subject for research on perception.

aside from this I just pulled a list off wiki of audio changes from theatrical vs special edition weather or not this is totally accurate I do not know the answer but likely not as C3PO saying "I don't want to die" without the cut off is not listed neither is the Gantry and reverb on voices or wind sound effects during sabre duel.

as for some of the original sound it's been so long I honestly can't remember the original sound of "the first transport is away" or the original "who are you" when C3P0 get's shot for instance this has gone from memory. Neither did I realize there was so many audio changes

______________________________________________________

There were also a large number of audio changes to the Special Edition version, all of which were incorporated into all subsequent releases of the film, unless otherwise noted.

  • On Hoth, right after C-3PO tells R2-D2 to "Switch off", R2 gives out a little "blurp".
  • When Luke collapses in the snow, he lets out a grunt as he lands on his face.
  • Han says, "until I can get the shelter up" instead of, "until I can get the shelter built."
  • Luke says an additional "Ben... Dagobah..." just before Han says, "I thought they smelled bad on the outside."
  • When C-3PO tells Luke, "It's so good to see you fully functional again", Luke replies, "Thanks, 3PO."
  • The line "Headquarters personnel report to Command Center" is said three times instead of two.
  • The line "The first transport is away!" is said in a different voice.
  • When R2-D2 is being loaded into Luke's X-Wing, C-3PO says "and" before saying "do take good care of yourself."
  • Han's line "Transport, this is Solo. Better take off, I can't get to you. I'll get her out on the Falcon" is followed by, "Come on."
  • In the asteroid field, after C-3PO says, "Oh, this is suicide", he says, "There's nowhere to go."
  • In the scene where R2-D2 is spat out by the bog beast, Luke says "You were lucky to get out of there," instead of "You're lucky you don't taste very good." This line was not in the 1993/1995 THX mix.
  • Yoda makes a frightened "AAHHH" sound when Luke points his blaster at him.
  • Yoda says, "Yes, run!" before "Yes. A Jedi's strength flows from the force." The following lines, "But beware the dark side. Anger, fear, agression. The dark side of the force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight" are also much louder and clearer.
  • The Imperial fleet establishing shot after the magic tree scene has a different TIE fighter sound effect.
  • A different part of The Imperial March plays during the shot of the Imperial fleet right before Darth Vader kills Captain Needa.
  • In Cloud City, after C-3PO says, "That sound like an R2 unit in there. I wonder if it..." he says "Hello?" only once instead of twice.
  • Before C-3PO gets shot, a different voice says "Who are you?"
  • While C-3PO is on Chewbacca's back when they enter the carbon freezing chamber, the line "Now remember Chewbacca, you have a responsibility to me, so don't do anything foolish" is heard louder and clearer.
  • During the duel, when Luke knocks Darth Vader off the platform, Vader lets out an "ooooh!" instead of an "aaargh!"
  • Lando Calrissian says "Attention" twice (instead of once) when he speaks on the Cloud City public address system.
  • Lando's line at the end, "Luke, we're ready for takeoff." is a different take.
  • In the final scene, there is no tracked music from "Yoda and the Force"
  • "The Imperial March" is partially repeated in the ending credits music to make room for the Special Edition release credits.

The new Vader hologram.....

That... looks sooo much better. Looking at the original now, it's as if Vader was already in an asteroid field and couldn't wait to send a clear transmission.

As always, outstanding work!

^ Nice work. Wonder what the emiter was made out of. Looks kinda like the tray out of a printer sprayed black with a Casio watch glued to it.

Holo Vader looks fantastic!  Thanks for previewing that, and well done to all involved with it.

I love how even the lighting on Vader's suit (helmet and chest plate) matches the original (what we can see of it, anyway). Your attention to detail is fantastic. Thanks for the preview!

Absolutely love the new hologram.  I'm so glad you are updating this film the way you are.  Eagerly looking forward to the release, whenever that may be ;)

FAT?!  LMAO I think it was just a lack of detail from the previous transmission if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure the tall guy in the screen accurate suit is proportioned correctly. Just saying.

The new Vader hologram is amazing! Congrats, Ady.
But, still, I think he is looking "fat". I have a little suggestion :
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/29456

The original was shot at the incorrect angle. The new one was shot at the correct angle to the holo-plate, so he would appear shorter/ fatter due to the perspective. Plus there is a lot of vader missing in the original due to bad matting.

I always figured that Vader was on his kneeling holo circle that he was on when speaking to the Emperor (ie Veers is projected in much the same way when speaking to Vader).  Thinking about that, it looks like Vader is on one knee, as you can only see his left foot, which can only be bent at the knee due to how short the distance between his foot and his hip is:

I highly doubt that Vader is kneeling because Vader in Ady's refilmed shot is standing up yet matches the proportions of the old shot. Also, why would Vader ever kneel before Veers?

A clear improvement over the original.... so far as removeing the old hologram goes was that painted out? I ask because there is never a moment when it is not present and no tune in.... Anyway it is very good and you would never know the original hologram was ever there

After seeing that new and improved Vader holo, now I'm curious what the plan is for these 3 holo captains.

I hope we can still keep the original footage (and not have to re-shoot any of them), just enhanced in areas to better match the other enhanced holos in the edit. But their holos shouldn't be clear either, since they should still look "hazy"/choppy from the asteroids interrupting their transmission.

I shot this at a higher angle to match with the angle of the background....the angle causes him to look "shorter".

Very nicely done AdY and muddy. Jeez I never realized the original was that bad, lol. Wow.

The angle is perfect, the pose is perfect. It's just a high angle shot guys, there's nothing off with how this came out...at least not to me.

Can't wait to see it in motion.
