What single (Non-SW) movie from the last 30 odd years has come closest to the spirit of Star Wars?... and why? — Page 6

The drowning sequence of Excalibur is lifted almost entirely from Black Angel.

It's been 32 years so I would dearly love to see that film again as kids it got talked about a lot in the playground.

The Matrix Trilogy comes close, however SW:OT is an oddball when it comes to film franchises. It takes inspiration from so many other great works more so than most movies.

If ILM didn't revolutionize the special effects industry, I doubt that Star Wars would've made it past 200 million at the box office or be nearly as memorable.

The Princess Bride had a bunch of good characters, good lot of humour too

^ If you're mentioning The Princess Bride I better break these out then...

btw the late great Bob Anderson did swordfights in the OT and The Princess Bride:

Lucas didn't use him on the PT so Peter Jackson snapped him up to be sword master in LOTR. Which is why the fights in LOTR rule and the duels in the PT suck balls.

Now I want to see how a duel between Bob Anderson and Nick Gillard would have gone =P

Nick Gillard would make a huge display of twirling his sword round his body...

...then Bob Anderson would just draw a Smith and Wesson and shoot him.

Forgot about this 1986 gem:

            ^ Obi-Wan                     ^ Luke

Rural boy finds he has a mystical power and a destiny to face down the dark lord. Grey haired old Nomad finds him and teaches him how to wield a saber and how to feel the energy of all living things. Eventually his mentor is struck down by the dark lord. Shame the sequel got a little TOO star wars for my liking.

                                  ^ Vader

Also all the sequels/prequels and spinoffs were a pile of crap in comparison which makes it extra SW! ;-)

80's-era Clancy Brown would have made a perfect Darth Bane in a live-action production, IMO.

Over saturated visual eye-sore like films like 'The Kings Speech', 'Skyfall' etc will date very quickly.

I certainly hope "films with more than two colors" isn't a description used in history books to describe how films from the latter twentieth century are visually unique...

Here's something I made,

The top two screenshots are from 2012's cutting edge digitally graded 'Skyfall, the bottom two are from colour-tinted silent films made almost 100 years ago when film was in it's infancy:

...or is that the other way around?

Let's hope films start looking like this again, sooner rather than later:

Also I did this GODFATHER 2013!!:

OH Yes! It's sooo much better!

(Rant over)

I hate unnatural film coloring with a passion. You may think I'm crazy but that ruined Lord of the Rings for me. LOTR was the first film that I remember going "those colors don't look natural." I know it's common to adjust the tint and color look of a film even before digital technology but LOTR was the first one that looked like it obviously was tampered with.

The Harry Potter movies suffered from this digital video look following the first two. I'm sorry but when a movie looks fake and unnatural, it's harder to believe that it's real for me. And don't say it's supposed to be tinted to show you how dark the movie is. That's what scriptwriting, acting and directing is for.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

You're not crazy. LOTR has shots that are tampered with to extremely unnatural degrees.  Especially Gandalf with his blue-hat/grey-hat and glowing face. But being a fantasy film and everything else in LOTR being so classy I could forgive it. But 'real world' films like 'Skyfall' are less forgiveable.

^ "Stop shining that torch in my face please"

^ "Dude, sersiously? Stop shining that torch in my face"

^ "Bitch I swear next time you shine that torch in my face I'm gonna Avada Kedavra yo ass"

LMAO

^ The Caradhras pass sequence is one of the worst. Everything but the skin is de-saturated til it's almost a sickly b&w. But their faces still glow with colour and float out of the image.

I was expecting 10 years on in 'The Hobbit' they'd have got better but no, it's worse if anything.

A new contender for this thread...

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

All kinds of Star Wars fun to be had including Chris Pratt pulling off that Han Solo-esque charming scoundrel who secretly has a heart thing.

The Incredibles

It's got the nostalgic trope-pastiche (commix superhero adventure in place of Back Rogers space opera), the ensemble development, and it's just a blast.

 Hell yeah!!

NOT in the same league......but top of the second league;)

If the prequels were as fun as this movie I'd forgive them for their flaws
