Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984)

I remember the first and last time I saw this movie was back in the summer of '96. I hadn't yet seen ROTJ, so I didn't know this took place in the SW Universe. I found it an alright movie at the time, though it wasn't something I would have filed away in my category of "Awesome Movies I'd Love to See Again & Again & Again". Having watched it now, again, my feelings haven't changed all that much; it's well made for a TV film, and a decent time-waster, but nothing more than that.

You have got to see Battle For Endor now. It's like Alien 3, if it was a kid's movie. ;)

I just watched the 2 Ewoks movies with my kids.  I enjoy them for what they are.  I'm one of those "the ewoks represent an irreversible change to the Star Wars universe to make it more kid friendly" types... but I don't mind them as long as they're in an actual kids' movie.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

A very accurate comparison.  I couldn't believe how they started it off!  But I still enjoyed it more than the first one.

I'm surprised nobody has deconstructed the film as a metaphor for George's marital issues at the time.

Disregarding the EU, I'd like to see Cindel come back as a New Republic ambassador to Endor, have a tender reunion with Wicket that becomes a steamy affair. Then, everything is upended by a very much alive Mace, (no, the first one) who's gone all Colonel Kurtz, and now rules the Dulocks.

Bring back Wilford Brimley too, and fess up to the the fact his character and Teek represented the first old gay couple in the SW franchise. ;)

The best part in that movie is when Wilfred Brimley says "fuck" under his breath. I guess George was asleep in the editing room. Maybe he made the mistake of watching the movie.

Brimley is a Mormon--a potty-mouthed Mormon, but Mormon nonetheless. I should update my you meen hes a mormon thread.

Wookieepedia claims this was debunked.

Then again, it sure sounds like someone yells "Die F*cker!" in ROTJ as the super star destroyer crashes into the Death Star...

Wookiepedia can write what it wants, but my ears hear what they hear. He drops the F-bomb in a moment of unscripted frustration that made it past the editing censors. The subtitles say "aw come on" because that is the script but he clearly says nothing at all that sounds like "aw come on." In fact, he only grunts one syllable. And it sounds a lot like "fuck."

That's also not nearly as weird as the Ewoks having an english conversation about C3P0. The "die, ya fuckers" is a bit interpretive, but the english Ewoks was a genuine easter egg!

Interesting. I'll have to check my copy of the original broadcast and the Laserdisc one of these days.

Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995)

The story was fine, the effects excellent, but it's Billy Zane as the Collector who makes this film as enjoyable as it is. I know, I know - he's not the best actor in the world, and he more often than not appears in movies that are mediocre at best. I'm not joking, though, when I say that I loved him in this, and that it's easiest the best performance I've ever seen him give. I believe that the perfect type of demon is the kind that is handsome and charming on the outside, but with an internal ugliness that barely manages to stay concealed under the surface; Zane portrayed that type perfectly. I can't give such praise to Jada Pinkett Smith's hair, though; it honestly looked like a Siamese cat coughed a massive furball up onto her head.

Mute Witness (1994)

Decent movie, but nothing exceptional. Alec Guinness's brief appearance as the villainous Reaper is easily the highlight of the film.

Urban Legend (1998)

I'm just going to come right out and say it - the only part of the film worth watching is the last twenty minutes or so, after Rebecca's Gayheart's character is revealed to be the killer and she begins hamming it up big time; everything before that is a lacklustre waste of time.

OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL                                                                                                                                                    I liked it well more than expected. Great art and cinematography, fine 3D and, above all, the basic story structure was fantastic.                                                                                                                                                                   OTOH,  the script, while quite good, could have used some punching up.  More wisecracks from MonkeyPal, more boisterousness and clever turns of phrase from Oz, and a bit less subdued Theodora in the first half would have helped.                                                                                                               For performances, Glinda and RW were terrific, MonkeyPal and ChinaGirl were spot on.   MK was subdued for awhile, but I think that was a creative decision to make her seem more lost and lonely and heartbroken for greater contrast to the Wicked Witch. JF was better than expected, though not my first choice for such an enthusiastically flim-flammy con artist. Oz is a very tough cast. Their first chioce, Downey, I think would have had a tough time with that part. JF was all right and even good in some places.                                                                                                                                                                On the whole, worthwhile. I even wouldn't mind seeing a sequel.

Wilford Brimley dropped an F bomb in Cocoon as well. Just FYI.

Wonder why Sellers/Edwards never made another Panther  film in the 60's? They feuded and thought the idea was spent for a time. The Mirisch Co. thought there was another sequel ripe for making, but Sellers/Edwards came up with

The Party

which has to be one of the dullest, uninteresting bits of fluff ever produced. Even the Sellers touch is missing. It goes on and on and on. Never funny. Never remotely interesting. It's Peter in almost brownface doing a very stereotyped Indian voice, IN ONE REALLY DULL DINNER PARTY WHERE NOTHING HAPPENS EXCEPT SOME OCCASIONAL DUMB HIJINKS!!!

I would rather watch Casino Royale. 5 times in a row. At least that knows it is bad.

1/2 ball for somewhat trying out of 4 bad sitar themes.

Of course I decided to finally try that one-of 60's Panther film, the one made by the studio without Sellers/Edwards but with the writers of the 70's era sequels.

Inspector Clouseau

stars Alan Arkin who actually isn't a bad Jacques, but lacks the gravitas and inherent weakness of Peter. The film starts out messy but you are willing to forgive...until you realize that it really is that messy and only gets worse. Nothing can save this. It's beyond dull, becomes absolute tedium, the plot is only there to have more screentime, the direction is nonexistent.

Fun fact: Directed by the same Bud Yorkin of ruining Blade Runner fame.

Zero balls.

Speaking of classic sci-fi and remakes...they're remaking my LMS. Originally by James Cameron who did Avatar instead. 3D release planned soon for this.

Fantastic Voyage

I haven't seen this in years. One of the sci-fi classics I saw as a kid on late night cable many years ago. The effects still hold up for the most part, but what is more dating and cheesy are the silly surroundings of the Cold War infused sci-fi military operations that are absolutely ridiculous. Bad sets, bad operational ideas, I'm now wanting to read Asimov's novel because he refused to keep the script's story out of sheer silliness. It's a good idea and works well due to the almost real time pacing of that 60 minute clock, but overall lacks a big impact.

And seriously guys? You don't know who the saboteur is? Have you even looked at the freaking crew of five and SEN who is among them??? Helooooo!

2.5 balls out of 4 appropriately placed antibodies on clingy wetsuits...;)

But I have to say, I'm not a big fan of older sci-fi films because I wasn't ever heavy into the classic 50's period. That said, the 1951 original Day The Earth Stood Still is a bewilderingly powerful exception. That bowled me over, and 100% deserves its reputation.

VADER!? WHERE THE HELL IS MY MOCHA LATTE? -Palpy on a very bad day.

There's a famous story of how Irwin Allen snuck into the Fantastic Voyage body sets to film an episode of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, where a bathysphere is swallowed by a giant whale.

There was also a Saturday morning cartoon series based on the movie.

Funny Games (2007)

Wow. I don't even...

I'm not sure if I thought is was brilliant, or absolute sadistic crap. Which I think means it met its objective. But still, I am at a complete less of what to rate this.

Thinking about it a little more, I think I have to give it

4 out of 8 broken eggs.

The Pagemaster (1994)

A fun little movie - it deserves more recognition than its got. The one major problem I have with this film is that the character animation more often than not lacks definition, making the characters look faded.

Darkness Falls (2003)

This movie could have been made at least 50% better had the filmmakers had the sense to make the ghost SILENT; the constain barrage of spectral groans, wails, and shrieks just made me want to swallow a load of buckshot. On the plus side, at least the ghost was realized primarily through conventional effects instead of shoddy CGI garbage.

The Missing (2003)

An adequate movie - I have no strong feelings toward it, good-or-bad.

Tower of Terror (1997)

A corny film. Not corny in the endearing, Vincent Price mold, but corny in the mildly-annoying, cheap, made-for-TV mold. All-in-all, though, it's not really bad, but definately for prepubescent kids who don't know any better.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

This will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with my current signature (XP), but I liked it. It's not as good as the original or the seventh entry in the series, but still a lot of fun. I've only got a few problems with this film - that Freddy is too well-lit, two of the protagonists die far too easily, and that it was followed by four direct sequels that should have never been made.

I knew a guy in high school who thought Dokken were musical gods when the soundtrack for that movie came out. ;)

"Django Unchained"

A good movie, but the violence left me very unsettled.  The evil that is portrayed is very real to life, and the same dynamic is still in operation in today's world. Nothing has changed at all.  I'm not too happy with the cinematography of this film. It looked as if it was shot digital and with green screen, and it pulled me out of the drama. The music was entertaining, but also broke the forth wall. But, I did like it.

v/h/s (2012)

Horror/slasher anthology film.  A few good stories, a few not as good.  The most disappointing part of this was the framing device, which was stupid, illogical, and ended very lamely.  Also, there was way too much gratuitous nudity.  Sure, 15-year-old me would have loved it, but 39-year-old me could tell that much of it was made by dudes who haven't grown up.

Trance (2013)

For once I saw a movie that just came out, which is interesting in this case because I can't find any reviews that aren't spoiler free. Which is too bad, because I'm not 100% sure I know exactly what happened. It was pretty enjoyable, but a little too open-ended for my tastes.

Also, Rosario Dawson.
