How come Entertainment weekly is saying this is Dark horse's swan song for star wars comics, are they just guessing Disney is going shut them down soon, or jumping the gun?
I think that'd be news to them. Starting a new ongoing "Star Wars #1" series a couple months before you lose the license seems silly. Unless they just want to put out all they can before it's too late.

I seriously doubt EW has any insider info on the matter.

Frankly, at this point I think it's anyone's guess. I can see Disney letting Dark Horse's license lapse so they can give it to Marvel...

Is there a word on when this comes out?

More info, plus a new Tavoularis storyboard (those are my favorite, almost up there with McQuarrie's work).

Personally, I suspect he has posted here before. It seems like how could he have not have.

It would be more interesting to make a comic of the proper treatment though. Or Leigh Brackett's first draft of Empire. There is some amazing stuff in that one that just begs to be brought to life.

I would throw a kitten in a blender for that comic.

Pft.  You were going to do that anyways.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

My first ever digital comic, it's pretty cool, like a more emotional, melodramatic version of PHANTOM MENACE.

I was wondering if this thread would get bumped.  :)

I just picked this up today, the first comic I've ever actually bought.

There's a lot of political discussion and a lot of characters and names all at once, but the underlying story is clear and has heart at this point.

One small thing that threw me: The lightsabers look like the ones from the film. I would have expected the artists to use the prototype lightsabers, the ones with flashbulb reflectors as hilts, that they were going to use on the film before the hilts were nixed. Would have been a neat throwback.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

While that is undoubtedly a cool idea, I don't know if Lucas actually intended lightsaber hilts to be so cumbersome--I would imagine that was more likely an artistic decision coming from tech limitations (i.e., having the lightsaber effects produced in-camera), as well as Ralph McQuarrie's art (from the second draft onward). Whereas the first draft was very very blue-sky in its approach (and had all-red sabers vs. the all-white ones used in filming ANH--another indicator that the visual design changed repeatedly).

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Anyone still with this comic ?

Issue 3 is out now.

I was surprised how small R2-D2 is drawn. R2 only comes up to C-3PO's knee. I never had the impression that R2 was that small from the Ralph Mcquarrie painting.

I thought R2's about the same size in the early McQuarrie paintings as he is in the films, only with more arms sticking out.

Yeah, same here. The McQuarrie painting is copied for one panel. Then in another  panel, 3PO picks R2 up and throws him across the sand.

Mmmmm ?

I'm really loving this book. I can see though there are TOO MANY CHARACTERS. As a comic I can barely keep up, as a movie it would be nuts.

This started Mr. Lucas on the long trend of combining characters for narrative efficiency that eventually gave us (General  Vader+Prince Valorum+Starkiller=Darth Vader) and Leia as Luke's sister.

And I love the art.

I can hardly wait. I prefer to read long form comic books (I was never into collecting the multi-part paper originals) so I'm waiting for the complete edition... 6 months is gonna be a long time.

Omnibus editions are fine these days, but with vintage material you lose all the ads and the letters page. A real snapshot of the time the comics originally ran in, and what was on the fan's minds.

You know, I think I just realized the fundamental problem with the prequels...

The rushed time frames the scripts were produced in.

You need to have time for rewrites, because you need to get the script to that level of quality that comes when you revise it from the script.

You don't start the script in pre-production, you start pre-production once you've finished the script.

(for the record, I'm in the middle of a massive rewrite of my own script right now, and it's rather cleansing)

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

Very true. I grew up reading 2000AD/Judge Dredd and loved all the adds and letters each week. But that had 5 or 6 running stories to keep you going and the next part of the story was only 7 days away. I could never get into the US model of reading a few pages and then waiting a month for the next few. My ideal is an Alan Moore size opus that you need a crane to lift and a couple of weeks to soak up ;-).

For example, I could never love Moore's acclaimed 'The Killing Joke' because it's so short. It felt like asking Michaelangelo to sketch a fresco on the back of a stamp.

Anybody know how long/many pages 'The Star Wars' is gonna be in total?

This is why I'm glad if the new movies miss the original planned release date/year (Despite having to wait longer). It shows Disney care more about the quality of the story than hitting a deadline. But that's waaay off topic.
