From what he said in Harmy's thread, he doesn't intend to tweak the 5.1 mix for Star Wars, just to make some fixes to the 2.0 Dolby Stereo mix.

He did say he was planning on revisiting the 5.1 mixes for ESB and RotJ, however.

Yeah, even if h_h won't have new mixes ready before we release ESB and ROTJ, the old mixes already sound very good too.

Further tweaking to any of the 5.1 tracks will be minimal, and would be done as much for the sake of my learning to work with professional software as any other reason.  ESB and RotJ may benefit somewhat from the inclusion of lossless LFE from the 2011 Blurays, but even that won't make a huge difference in sound quality: much more of an improvement could be heard if the user upgrades to a hifi subwoofer and plays the current lossy version over that.  ;)

Just to clarify: Do you plan on fixing and GOUT-sync'ing schorman13's digital '77, '80, and '83 2.0 LD rip mixes or...?

Forgive me if this was ambitiously-worded... ^_^

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I just want to thank you for your effort!

I just want to thank everyone for all the kind words, we are at the authoring stages on both the SW BV2 as well as the ANH97SE Blu, then I will burn copies for testing, it looks like we will have like 4 projects done at almost the same time, which is a good thing because I am needing hard drive space bad! HD files take up a lot of room especially when you have 4-5 projects going at once lol.

So stay tuned goodies are on the way!

Good to see you here again dark_jedi. Like I was just telling You_Too, you guys have done an amazing job on this - when I was finally able to get your latest sample and compare it side by side with raw GOUT, my jaw literally just dropped and I was staring at it in disbelief.

Author
Time

Yes the samples are hard to believe! The colors are really amazing, thanks for all the hard work guys!

Thank you once again guys!

And it's nice to see DJ here again.

So why can't I update my first page? I can edit other pages but not that one, does anyone know why this is, I used to be able to.

Thanks

It was locked by Moth3r.  If I had to guess, he probably did it proactively when you were temp banned in case you tried to delete it.

LMAO that is exactly what I figured, well hopefully he unlocks it so it can be updated, unless he does not want updated posts with updated current specs and all.

Besides the Conan and SW what are the other projects you're talking about?

Author

We have 4 projects going on, SW Blu V2 & 97 SE, Conan and Night of the Living Dead 1990.

Just putting this out there, I'm rebuilding the 1977 Zoetrope® 6 Channel audio, in effect its 5.1 surround. I'm using the 1977 Mono muxed to support all 6 channels and normalized to the 5.1 levels to build each track.

I saw the pre messed with version 57 times, I was a sonar tech and know my sound....

You mean you have the original 1977 surround audio? From the 70mm?

And what do you mean by using the 1977 mono? The 1977 mono mix has differences compared to the 6-channel I think?

This is very interesting and it would be nice to know more details if you'd share them, or create a thread about it!

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Unfortunately there is no way to bring all colors back since the GOUT is sourced from a faded interpositive.

Technically, yes. But practically speaking, if you know for what you're aiming, mild fading shouldn't present much of a problem, as demonstrated in this more severe (?) fade before-and-after:

THX 1138 preservations (Italian Cut available, see 1st post) - 53 and the 5 preceding pages.

Looking forward to lots of projects samples (comparison snapshots / clips) and detailed descriptions of techniques used. And please give consideration to those of us who must DL the old fashioned way.  :)

Um...

1) The 6 channel 70mm audio in 1977 was a 4.2 channel system called "Baby Boom" - not "Zoetrope". Perhaps you are confused with dolby's Stereo Surround that was a refinement of the Baby Boom system first used for Apocalypse Now (1979), which in effect was a 5.1 system.

2) The 6 channel version and the Mono mix are completely different mixes with completely different sound effects and even dialogue.

3) "the Mono muxed" used in this context is just nonsensical technobabble.

In conclusion, I call BS.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Welcome back, dark_jedi. :) Superb work the two of you have done, the latest samples are clearly superior to even the blu-ray version 1, and that's saying something. And vastly better than the GOUT before restoration.

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

Well yeah, some fade can be corrected if working from a raw scan with all the color information intact. The GOUT has unfortunately been desaturated even after the scanning. In lots of scenes there are parts of the picture which actually has no color information left at all. Here's an example:

Here the saturation is set to 100 in photoshop. Check the left part of the back wall, or the ball-thing in the middle of the table. There simply is no chroma at all in those parts!

So while I was wrong saying the reason is that it's from a faded interpositive, (well that's partly true) I'm not wrong saying it's been treated very badly after the scanning.

EDIT:

Here's the same part from the 70mm scan, with same saturation setting in photoshop, so you can see how much more color and balance there is in the original:

[BTW, I just tuned into this thread and it's looks awesome.]

Without finding that frame (non-saturated) to examine it's problem in R-G-B before asking this, I'll just ask ...

Did you ever look into snicker's (excellent) concept of "repairing" clipped luminance (both high & low) by patching in non-clipped (or lesser clipped) same-areas from different R-G-B planes?

Maybe useful in such instances?
