Actually, I found an old quote from Mike Verta where he confirms my suspicions:

There is an incredible amount of grain in the transfers, which is not part of the masters they come from (I've seen them). To be honest, it's not so much grain, as it looks like dirt - the film stocks used for those movies are not that grainy. In any case, this, and a ton of other evidence, has led people like me to strongly suspect they've been deliberately grained up, or in other ways made sure to look like an inferior release next to the 2004's.

Releasing them non-anamorphically, as dirty, grainy prints but stil better than fan-preservations, kills the bootleg market, and makes some cash, while still not encroaching on the sales of the "superior" 2004 DVD's. Lucasfilm has been running a smear campaign on their own release of the OT on starwars.com making sure people know how shitty the originals look compared to the 2004's. Marketing-wise, it's brilliant.

Are GOUT's colors different from what's found in the 1995 THX "Faces" set?

I'm interested in that too. To see if it's any different from the US version.

Well, the cropping is definitely different. Look here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Original-Theatrical-Versions-2006-DVD-Flaw-List/post/594821/#TopicPost594821

I wonder if there are any other differences...

A bunch of shots were replaced from non-DVNR sources when making the master for the '95 THX "Faces" release from that of the '93 Definitive Collection (DC).

Most of these replacements were to correct split-lightsabers, as these were easily visible and many people complained about them after the release of the DC.

Can we somehow come up with a list of them?

They're typically much dirtier than other (surrounding) shots and in one case, at least, the framing is different.

There was a rumour that these split lightsabre shots were corrected on the Faces set, but then again I seem to recall someone proving that this was not the case.

I grew up with "Faces" and never noticed any split-lightsabers, even after watching the trilogy many many times. I have a good eye for this kind of thing.

I'll grab the X0 raw capture of the DC tonight, do a quick IVTC and GOUT-sync, and then do a side-by-side comparison.

Antcufaalb, the split-lightsaber artifacts were fixed already in later pressings of the Definitive Collection LD set. Traces of the same problem is still present in the GOUT, they just corrected the most offensive ones.

The initial glitches and flaws in the DC set was numerous, initial pressings lacked footage in ESB (Leia welding) for example.

msycamore: Thanks for this information. I didn't know that they fixed anything with the DC besides the missing Leia footage.

Still, it would be interesting to know exactly which shots were corrected; that is, not passed through the DVNR-1000.

Had a quick look at Dr Gonzo's DC preservation which was made from an early pressing and the only one that differ is the scene in Ben's hut.

Thought there was a similar issue in the Falcon scenes but it seems identical to subsequent pressings.

Is there a list somewhere of shots in ROTJ that were reused from ANH?

Not what you are looking for but a reuse of RotJ into the ESB:SE.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_changes_in_Star_Wars_re-releases

Darth Vader lands in the Death Star docking bay with Luke, taking him to the Emperor. This scene was reused in The Empire Strikes Back Special Edition as Vader returns to the Executor. Although Luke cannot be seen, Moff Jerjerrod can be seen mouthing his lines from Return of the Jedi.

Was it that many?

I recall this one:

with some adjacent shots, but I may be wrong...

If the goal is to find exact matches then this maybe only one or two shots, but most of the sequence was probably shot during SW but they manipulated things for RotJ.  For example the above shot is flipped for RotJ and the SFX are different.

One shot which could be exact would be of the Imperial Gunner who reaches up to push some buttons.  There are grey dials in the background on the right.  Actually both Imperial Gunner reaching up shots could be duplicates.  But in the 2004 versions the contrast is different, illuminating the gunner's head insignia more for RotJ.  EDIT Upon closer inspection, it's a different take the 'grey dial' shot, the Imperial in the background in RotJ plays with the dials in SW they don't.

A shot which is close and could be either an alternative angle, is the hand which pushes one of the mostly green lights.  In SW the buttons are horizontal with the shot, while in RotJ the panels is on an angle.

I see... did you check both Imperial gunner sequences in SW, Alderaan and Yavin?

Wasn't there some quick shots of stormtroopers and TIE-pilots running that was shot during SW, seen when Luke drags Vader to the shuttle? Some Dagobah stuff shot during ESB perhaps?

Otherwise, I think they reused the transitional X-wing shot from ESB, seen in that film just before the asteroid sequence but in Jedi seen before the Emperors big arrival, some X-wing interior shots when Luke speaks with Artoo was reused as well, I think.

It was my understanding that there were some UNused SW shots used for ROTJ, but they were not REused.

No was a quick check.  This may deserve it's own thread.  Good trivia material, but would need to gather shots to confirm Mielr's statement of them being unused.  Would make sense, why cut out the shot from the negative when you can use a different takes negative.  Then would you include material shot during the production of one film only to be used in a later film.  (Obi delivering Luke for example)

Did the DC/Faces/GOUT release of ROTJ have any DNR applied at all?

I'm struggling to find smearing...
