@poita: Thanks! While we've talked a bit here and there about how it was done, we haven't revealed everything because we thought it was better to finish the project and release it before revealing the full avisynth scripts.

Fair enough. I'm looking foward to it.

It's been a while since I've been on this thread, can I get a new Myspleen invite to access the previews? Thanks.

Thanks, I have downloaded it. I LOVE MOST of it, some of the scenes still look washed out and desaturated but still it's a million times better than the source material :)

@theextractor720: Sent you an invite now.

@pittrek: I'm glad you like it. Unfortunately there is no way to bring all colors back since the GOUT is sourced from a faded interpositive. And I also need to point out that in our earlier versions of the scripts where we set the saturation higher, it would be too much and not look realistic. The way it is now, it still brings out what's there, just check this comparison for example:

Look at how the walls behind Tarkin look grey in the GOUT, and when we've dug up the colors you can see that they're actually a greenish blue.

Between this and Harmy's 2.1, this will be a great year for the OT.  I actually bought a blu-ray burner because of project blu!

You_Too: Not only are the colors in general much better and more properly saturated, the skin tones are a lot more accurate, as well. Not an easy combination to get. Great job to you and DJ! :)

The Star Wars trilogy. There can be only one.

@Infinity: Nice! I don't even have a blu-ray burner myself yet... haha

@Dunedain: Thanks! Yeah it sure wasn't easy, looking back how we started, but now we have some great looking settings that works for all three films.

@You_Too Mind if I too join myspleen? New to this thread, must check out the standard def GOUTs in preparation/anticipation for your new stuff... Thanks :}

Niiice...

How do the starfields look in your new version, any samples?

Actually when it comes to the starfields, unfortunately there's not any big improvement. The bright stars are just slightly brighter, that's about it.

Looking for a myspleen invite as well.  Greatly appreciated.  Used myspleen a few years ago, but must have deleted my account due to non use.  Very excited for these releases.  I can't imagine the amount of work put into them.  Thank you very much.

The colours, and the level of detail (is there some sharpening going on along with the upscale?) you've managed to dig out of the murky GOUT video are really impressive.

It's a shame that there still residual DVNR smearing and aliasing that you can't do anything about. Please do share your script when you're done, because I'd be interested in testing it out on a capture of the PAL laserdisc.

To demonstrate how nice these colours are, I've added downscaled screenshots (1-3 only) to my comparison page here: http://moth3r.heliohost.org/dvd-screens.htm

There is sharpening (via MSharpen), but it's subtle.

Mostly, however, I find it's You_Too's colors that really bring out the "hidden" details.

Wow!  I hadn't checked out the samples on the Spleen just yet, but that comparison really is quite impressive!

Author

Wow, that looks almost too good to be true. Great job!

But did you notice the different framing (less information ot the left, more on the right)? I compared it to my GOUT DVD and the framing there seems to be different too. Does the PAL GOUT have different framing from the NTSC? And did the rescaling to PAL maybe make the aliasing worse? Because it seems incredible how much better it is in the Project Blu version compared to my PAL DVD. If the aliasing is the same on the NTSC DVD, you guys have pulled some real magic here!

Thanks everybody!

@Harmy: No idea if the framing is different in SW and ESB between NTSC and PAL, but I know that it is for ROTJ.

But the reason there is less picture on the left in our version is simply because we had to crop out just a little for the stabilization of the picture, otherwise there was a 1-pixel wide black border jumping in on the side every now and then.

And from what I remember the aliasing isn't worse in the PAL version, but the picture suffers from being slightly blurred compared to the NTSC. Like they tried to soften it when upscaling it but resulting in a loss of some detail. Strangely enough as some of you might know, with ROTJ it's the opposite, that the NTSC version has less detail.

Well, less information on the left side I understand but how could there be more on the right side? And I guess the softness was introduced in the scaling - when you scale by a small amount, it usually causes some softness.

It would be interesting to do some PAL vs NTSC GOUT and THX LD comparisons - it's possible that they used the PAL master for the ROTJ release.

No idea but if it helps, here's that first shot from the raw GOUT, with only the black bars on top and bottom cropped:

You'll also see that there's a little more on the left than in our final version but that's because a few pixels on the left side have strange stuff going on during the film like there's sometimes a blue line there or no colors and so on. It looked better when just cropping that little area away.

EDIT:

Found some raw PAL GOUT SW screenshots and from what I can see when layering them on the same NTSC shots in photoshop, they're cropped more on all 4 sides!

EDIT 2:

Here's a comparison. I cropped the black borders on the sides of NTSC GOUT for this one. I resized the PAL frame to match the NTSC one, and left black bars around it. You can clearly see it's missing some pixels:

Interesting, so the PAL DVDs are definitely NOT just resized NTSC masters as previously suggested ?

They're definitely from the same master, as they have the same center-distortion and one registers perfectly to the other in even the crappiest image registration program.

It seems to me that the PAL GOUT release wrt to resizing, etc. was a hack-job, at best.

If h_h is doing corrections to his mixes, would they still make it to the BD release? Hope so. :)

His mixes are awesome. It would be great if he did some further fixes/tweaks to his mixes, but I wouldn't be too bothered if he didn't. The current mix is pretty amazing the way it is, and certainly excellent when viewing the beginning of ANH.

I wouldn't object to the idea if he wanted to do some more work on them though. ;-)
