The last edit of Adywans start post is one year ago. Whats the status of the creating process? Is there a schedule?

I'm looking forward to see the complete revisted movie :)

Hi Guys!

Have you already seen this beauty?

http://boards.theforce.net/threads/the-empire-strikes-back-wampa-attack-new-stop-motion-shots.50008252/

Joe Schultz and Jim Davidson created a new stop motion animation Wampa sequence for the Empire. The idea was to create a stop motion animation what would fit into the original movie. Therefore it is not a CGI animation, instead a traditional stop motion scene. I would like to see a similar or familiar scene(s) in the Empire Revisited, because the idea works fine…at least for me.

Videos only:

What do you think, and what Adywan thinks about the idea?

I love ya man but.... today is 5 years working on this. How about a detailed 5 year update for us? I not only look forward to this but to finally getting into the nuts and bolts of ROTJ:R

Personally the sort of five year update I'd like to see would be the final project, complete.

I'm happy to go without anymore screenshots, previews etc and just let Team Ady get on with turning that final corner.

I thought you were full of crap saying this was the five anniversary but dam, I guess it is. 5 years isn't what it used to be.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Your top example is nearest in light conditions to the ESB:R image and there I see blueish snow and orangey skin.

What is different is a white light source aimed behind the standing figure which I can only assume was added by the photographer.

Ady could add a faux light source to the shot but it would create an issue of continuity which might throw up ugly lit shots either side of this one.

We really have to see these shots in context to appreciate them.

Ady is generous with his previews but it does lead to a lot of navel gazing, only some of which is of value (though it's impossible to tell which is unless you are working at the chalkface so it's best to keep eyeballing that belly button lint).

Ah boy... Bingo, I'm not going to get pulled into a back-and-forth.  I stated fairly clearly that the reason the boy has normal skin tone is because the light source is above and behind the camera, lighting the boy and the ground immediately behind him.  It's a fill light (similar to the scene in SCARFACE when Tony is making the call after the chainsaw scene on the pier.  With the orange setting sun behind him, DePalma needed a fill light so you could see him and the background sunset.  If there wasn't a fill light on the kid, he would be extremely dark as the picture was exposed to get the surrounding landscape).

Regardless, maybe it's just a thing to see in motion.  I'm just saying I'm not sure if Luke would have such reddish skin tone if the surrounding ambient light is dark blue.

Even so, you can be insulting and call this navel gazing, but the entire point (I thought) of Ady posting such pictures was to get feedback and ideas.  I can't make Ady change anything, but I can provide my personal perspective.  That is all.

What is interesting is that it looks like EMPIRE:R is going back to the look of the 2004 dvd (at least with the specific "Luke sees Obi Wan" scene):

Adywan's The Empire Strikes Back: Revisited - Lukes Rescue (go to 2:40)

I do find this one shot to be a concern. In the old comparison video you linked to, the snow looks white. I never liked the whole "snow should look blue" thing. I'm surprised this shot is turning out so blue when it was previously shown to be corrected. I wonder what the reasoning is?

EDIT: Just read Adywan's comments further down. I guess the saturation was over-boosted in the captures? And I guess there was always some blue in those shoots. I guess I've just never been a fan of the blue snow look myself.

Also remember that at least in these few shots in this scene, it should have a blue cast because it's nightfall.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

While I prefer the prior clip (with the more whitish snow and heavier on the gray end of the spectrum to show nightfall), one must keep in mind that snow is still water.  Being that the sky is blue due to light being refracted through various molecules (water being a chief component, or H2O), snow, while white especially during daytime as it reflects ALL colors (due to sunlight hitting it directly), at night it will reflect the same color as water does during the day - which is blue (short of other light sources reflecting off of it, such as street lamps and the like).

Of course, I could be completely wrong.  I suggest those members who live in northern areas or are experiencing snowfall to simply go outside (away from street lights) to photograph some night shots, like these:

It appears that even if there is a bluish tint, it would still skew more towards the grey end of the spectrum (per the second picture).

Now this is still STAR WARS, so visual "coolness" or perception can mean more than reality, so in the end it really comes down to what looks the best to the human eye.

I've managed to sort out the problem i was having with capturing the images. Seems like Vegas didn't like my HueyPro calibration software on the new machine and was applying filters that were disabled. Here is a screenshot of Luke during his conversation with Obi-Wan. As you can see the skin tones are not as saturated as they looked on the comparisons

As for any photos of what snow covered areas look like at night, well you have to take into consideration the white balance the camera would impose when taking the picture and lighting conditions. But i films blue has always been used to give the appearance of night. This scene was indeed blue on the original prints. I guess we are so use to seeing the OT from our VHS/ laserdisc days where prints had already started to fade. Puggo's 16mm are very good examples of how the films originally looked and ESB was in fact a very blue film. although the picture was never a blue ash out like the 2004 DVDs have lead us to believe.

ady, do you notice how the top of Luke's hat is darker? It almost looks like a subtle gradient has been pulled down from the top of the frame by about 1/5 of the image.

Not sure if that was in the original or just in yours, but it seems like unfinished cc (or unfinished grading if it's from the DVD/Blu-ray/Revisted). Almost as though the gradient was meant to only be applied to the background, but was never masked out from Luke's face/hat.

Sorry if I'm being unclear. I could always run it through photoshop to demonstrate what I'm talking about.

I think that's a vignette from the camera lens - or the lens hood.

Ouch! Video Village might have come in handy on that shoot. Should be an easy fix if ady feels it should be addressed.

I don't write much on here,  but I do frequent.... I'm still just excited about this edit as I ever was. Looking forward to this release.

Keep pushing along, Ady. We'll be here when you get done.

I agree, chyron8472. The less-blue one definitely looks better.

I remember how critical some people were about the desaturation of the Death Star corridors in ANH:R I think this time Ady is just trying to get it right rather than stand out for the sake of it.

It's late evening, night is falling, it makes sense it will be blue at that point, just not a uniform blue tint across most of the movie like the post-2004 SE.

It's unfortunate that no one has mentioned the proper color of the snowflake on Chewie's foot yet.

That's because there's no real contention about that. It's green, everyone knows that.

What snowflake are you talking about?

I think he's trying to say that we're being overly-critical of small (relative to the entire film) color choices.
