[OUT - ruLes] Original Unaltered Trilogy restored using Laserdisc editions - A New Hope (Released) — Page 4

I just watched it and I think the quality is pretty good.  I wanted to say that if you are degraining the video with very strong settings it sometimes doesn't hurt to add grain back in at the end of filtering.  It might help to hide some of the large slow moving grain. If you are using something like mvdegrain there is a multi-threaded version available as mvdegrainmulti which saves a lot of processing time in the long run if you are using the normal avisynth 2.5x release.

Luke threw twice…maybe.

Finally! I have it, i noticed two problems with the French audio track. The voices are sometimes too low it's hard to understand what they are saying. And the audio goes out of sync at the end. Beside these two problems, your preservation is really well done and looks very good. Nice job! ;)

g-force, AntcuFaalb, what do you think about the new denoiser?

I'd like to release a new version, but as my PC will do the conversion in FIVE days (OO_)I want to be sure it is good enough... Thanks to AntcuFaalb; he found that strange glitch - caused by the denoise filter - probably never noticed by anyone else, including me...

Maybe a little clip will be more explanatory! Please let me know which scene do you like to see, to show the new denoiser potential - around 30 seconds, if possible, as it will be dubbed in more than an hour...

It's hard to tell with the .gif yo posted. I'm probably not the person to ask anyway, as I've never seen a denoiser that I like.

Thanks for the feedback; about the volume problem, it may be due to the fact I converted the 2.0 PCM Dolby Surround to 5.1 AC3 - the plugin didn't work to well; for the sync problems, I checked it and you are right, so I tested video with original track, and it's still out of sync... I checked the original capture, and it's out of sync, too! So, either the capture has some sync problem, or the original french soundtrack is out of sync on the laserdisc itself... I must investigate further!

I don't like denoiser a lot, too, but it's a "necessary evil" when processing a laserdisc capture, do you agree?

Anyway, I'm still testing denoisers (and related settings)...

A denoiser is necessary if encoding to MPEG2 (for DVD) as noise hurts compression. But maybe if you encode to AVC you could leave out the denoiser?

...

And the audio goes out of sync at the end.

I investigated, and found that side 4 of the french THX laserdisc was out of sync... I put both english and french soundtracks on Audacity, to find the exact delay; I sync'd the french track with the english one, when no dialogs are present, and I saved the french track... that was out of sync for dialogs... then I tried to sync "by eye" the dialogs, but the effect was too much out of sync...

At the end, I reached a compromise, so both the dialogs and sound effects are out of sync (one positive, one negative), but the result is better than before (where both were off sync of about 700ms...)

Here you are a rough test clip, just to hear if the sync could be tolerable enough:

Project update:

thanks to my own SET project, I discovered something more to improve the OUT project too:

  • a better method of upscaling the median&average laserdisc captures
  • color correction for OUT is not needed - just a bit of more saturation is
  • the new sharpen/denoise script will be less aggressive than the old one
  • a proper color matrix will be used this time for the final release

plus

  • a re-recorded italian soundtrack - with proper hi-fi quality
  • a synchronized french soundtrack - especially near the end
  • completely redone sountracks, 2.0 Dolby Surround encoded
  • 8 half-dark frames restored
  • proper file size of the .m2ts file to fit a DL DVD

Still thinking about adding a good avisynth comb filter, because I have not seen any annoying dot crawl or rainbow problems on the old OUT; feedbacks about this are appreciated.

I'd like also to add Hairy_Hen and Belbucus soundtracks, and I preferred to have their permission first... but Hairy_Hen didn't answer my message, and Belbucus has not visited this forum in the last two months... what do you think? Should I add those soundtracks to my project without their permissions? Of course, credits will be left intact.

After finishing SW SET, I will start immediately the OUT improvements; I think that OUT 2.0 will be released next month, if anybody cares...

P.S. the german, french and spanish subtitles are not literal... if someone would help me to fix them, it will be a great thing!

I'm pretty sure that as long as you give them credit, they wouldn't object :-)

You know, I'm "old style"... I prefer to ask, before, if I can use something, also if I'm allowed to do it freely... (^^,)

But, if you think they will agree, I'll add theis sountracks to my project!

Harmy, what do you think... should I continue with my project? It seems (almost) nobody cares if I will improve my OUT or release my SET... I'm feeling a bit demoralized these days... (##n)

I'd like to have literal subtitles - what the actors says in the movie, the subtitltes report exactly the speech word by word...

The subtitles I have are not literal... if you would like to help, you have to listen to the whole movie and correct the subtitles - an hard work, I've done it for the italian subtitles! Or, find a transcription of the french dialogue...

Why not used a software translator on the English subtitle file and then fix the mistakes it makes by going through line-by-line?

The quality of online (and offline) translator is good but not perfect... Sometimes I used them, but everytime I have to correct a lot of mistakes. It will be a good help IF someone knows well the two languages involved, but still a lot of work is needed to adjust text... and, as my french knowledge is almost near to zero, it will be difficult to spot the right and wrong words and phrases, also because the french pronounce is not one of the easiest in the world - italian is easier (^^,) so the spoken words will be though not only to understand, but also to transcribe for non-french-speaking people (including me, of course...)

Add to this idiomatic phrases different for each language, and Star Wars french adaptations like names of persons, places, etc...  so, for a french speaking person, Star Wars fan could help me a lot more than an automatic translation...

But let the words speak... the next lines are the first from Star Wars crawl. Normal text is from the french subtitles - and on screen text - bold text is from the automatic translation made by Google translate from the english subtitles. Probably another automatic translation will be more precise on some phrases or words, but not in others, so I think that any automatic translation will be useless in this case. Note also that the accents are missing... french is full of accents! And, WHY google translates Death Star as Etoile Noire (Black Star)?!?

Do you want literal subtitles based on a translation of the english dialogues or based on the french dialogues ?

Author
Time

I'd like to obtain the literal transcribe of the french dialogues - what they say is exactly what is in the subtitles.

If you would like to help me, I'll wait before releasing the OUT 2.0, to add your transcribed subtitles to it.

Well, now I know who to call for the SET french subtitles... (^^,)
