Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released) — Page 21

There is a copy up on MySpleen which is PAL->NTSC that I did that got rid of most of the blended fields, but this version should put that one to shame... :)

That's good to hear, ww12345. :)

What did your script to get rid of the field blending look like?  The blends on my copy are quite bad, especially the odd fields, which generally speaking look far worse than the even fields.  I wonder if we taped the same broadcast.

I believe he used Srestore.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Which would be the same as the previous 2-disc version then.

Yay, another redundant confusing release.

Well, the script was actually a bit modified.

Yes, you could say another "reduntant" release, but I was never able to get a copy of the original release, so I had to make my own. The one person who seemed to have it never shipped the disc to me, and stopped responding to email...

@chewtobacca: I believe it is from the same broadcast. The version I used as the "original" came from OldSkoolFan over on MySpleen.

Thanks.  I've used Srestore before.  It just occurred to me that the terminology I used was imprecise because I typed quickly without thinking.  I didn't mean that it was a classic field-blended NTSC-to-PAL conversion: I meant that every (or almost every) field is a blend of two fields -- "full field blended" might be a better way of putting it.

Oh, I see.  I didn't realize that you weren't the one who recorded the broadcast in the first place.  Mine was recorded a while back and wasn't downloaded.  I don't think that it's likely to be of use to anyone though, because it's a bit of a mess.

Mentor's cap was about 50% clean fields, which is about right for normal blended field broadcasts.

And I misspoke(?) before, I forgot that I used Restore24.

My later testing showed no real difference in the output between the two, just that Srestore is faster.

I already have a long list of stuff to get back out there, I guess the 2-disc edition is going to have to go on that list to.

It's weird since I had it posted on MediaFire for a really really long time.  I'm surprised there aren't more copies floating around.

Yes, please! I would love do see that 2-disc set.

By the way, an update for the telecine - progress is coming along splendidly; I'm working today with testing the shutter and seeing about slowing down the motor. The LED is on order (still!) and will be installed as soon as it comes in.

I figure I'm going to start putting stuff on MediaFire again (with a bit of security).  Anyone know of a good proxy to use for uploading?

I was gonna use Tor/Vidalia, but it doesn't seem to work with MediaFire.

It seems MySpleen, although not a fan of most edits/preservations, is cool with SotS.  Is a file safe site preferred by you guys or good old torrents.

(Sorry, I suppose that's a bit off topic.)

My vote is for good ol' torrents via MySpleen.

(However, Usenet is my favorite, but I think we've already ruled it out.)

Unless they got a copy from Disney themselves, this preservation is still absolutely necessary. I'm 99% sure that the DVD that they are selling is from an existing transfer (IE: PAL LD or VHS, or HK or JP LD) and not from a "non-destroyed" source. There are problems with each of the listed sources, mostly with blended fields. That is what this preservation will fix, as it will be frames linked together, similar to how a movie really works, rather than a digital approximation, like what the LD did. Disney has made steps to preserve SOTS, but whether we will ever see a release only time will tell.

That report was posted here a while back, and yes it is likely to be just another bootleg that museum is selling.

That report is dated Nov 12, so this particular report hasn't been discussed (although perhaps the Remus offering has).

Read the comments...some info in there that makes this disc at least worth investigating.

I'd be willing to front the cash to purchase it, but they don't have an online store and Georgia is ~10 hours from where I live.

Well, it does have the same cover and general list of contents. If anything, I'd call it a good guess.

If this is the one I'm thinking of, it is a copy of the "Coal Black" disc. IIRC, they are who I bought a copy from approx 1 yr ago, and it was the run-of-the-mill "Coal Black" version. I was not happy, but c'est la vie.

Anyone want to take one for the team and see what it looks like? :)

I found it via a posting on the CartoonBrew.com facebook page--someone visited them museum, took a photo of the cover and named the publisher.

This is unrelated to the 16mm procedure, but perhaps I'll just leave this here:

(See 1:34:23 for an explanation of the source)

In other news, I like to use various addons for Firefox to get things from flash video players on sites like YouTube. Also, I remember that http://keepvid.com/ works quite nicely.

You know, for the articles... :)

Just got the Song of the South DVD from Classic Reels. It's the one sold at the the Uncle Remus Museum in Eatonton, GA.

Although the disc presentation and cover are very nice, the movie is a low quality PAL to NTSC conversion running 90 min 26 sec. The NTSC versions of the feature made by OT.com users look much better.

Bonus Features:

Radio interviews with Walt Disney and the cast (First seen on the "Coal Black" DVD version.)

1972 re-release trailer (Menu says "60's trailer")

Behind-the-scenes footage (9 min. From a Disney website. Now can be seen on YouTube.)

Tales of Uncle Remus records from 1947

Audio excerpt from a 1947 Amos and Andy Show featuring James Baskett as his character Gabby Gibson promoting Song Of The South

Also, it contains a Spanish audio track which is not listed on the DVD menu or the cover. You have to select it by pressing the AUDIO or LANGUAGE button on your player's remote.

I'm currently trying to figure out how to obtain this DVD from China.

Looks like it just popped up on Amazon China in October of last year. It may be crap, but we'll see.
