Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park — Page 5

I didn't mean to sound rude, presumptuous or demanding. I'm just desperate.

I say 23.976 as some European blu-rays are 24.00 but that's probably not the case with the UK JP anyway

Holy cow great work on this release.  I finally got around to ripping my Jurassic Park BluRay to .mkv so I could sync this track with the video and it sounds amazing.

Just a note to those playing back DTS HD via Media Browser or XBMC.

I encountered a few problems with my video stuttering with the DTS HD audio.  I down converted the DTS HD file to DTS using TSmuxer and then added that to the video and it played back fine.  This is more than likely a problem with my computer but I just wanted to put out that possible solution for anyone who may happen to run into a playback problem using DTS HD.

Hi,

I've recently joined the forum, and as I mentioned on my introduction at the Alien thread, I'm a great enthusiast of preservation efforts.

Having read this thread from star to finish, I must compliment borisanddoris, ElDonate and everyone who help in this amazing accomplishment. Congratulations to you all, this is huge and I think the possibility of getting original DTS theatrical tracks (and also Laserdiscs for that matter) is something I've only dreamed of before.

If it's not asking too much, I'd really appreciate if someone could provide me with this track so I can mux it with my BD and enjoy this fantastic audio.

Thanks in advance. Best regads!

As for the '97 DTS mixes... what would they be mixed to?  I'd certainly be up for the challenge this summer, depending on the destination (Blu-ray, De-Specialized Editions, something else?).  It should take about a week per mix to get them just right.

I'm going to try to have a more detailed instruction set before tomorrow afternoon if anyone thinks it's necessary.  If there is demand, I can also write a script to automate the conversion.

El, I hope everything is okay as we haven't heard from you for awhile.  I am wondering if you are still interested in doing mixes for the SE like you did for Jurassic Park?

The JP mix you and boris brought us is a fantastic piece of teamwork that really shows what this community is capable of.

Here is to hoping that you are still considering this....it would be an awesome addition to all that has been happening.

Cheers!!!!

Hey Guys and Gals,

I've been MIA and I do apologize.  Kinda struggling in my work life which is pretty much my only life (up to 4h/day traveling to work, up to 14h/day of work, ugh).  I'd really like to hand the 97 DTS project off.  I don't get a winter break like the rest of the country because I provide Internet services for people all around the world and they're working when this country is on break or sleeping, so I do not see a time when I'll be able to get this done.

...unless, of course, someone in the Chicagoland area wants to give an IT guy a job where I can wear jeans and a t-shirt and not have to sit in traffic for hours :P

If anyone is up for the challenge, it's pretty easy to do, just really time consuming.

P.S.
When did the average wage for IT work become less than what I used to make as a teenager working part time at a mall?

Hey El....I am certainly glad that you are at least still with us here.  If I could find work to help my family I'd be in a better spot too....it definitely sucks these days.

As for the project...I am sorry to hear that news as well but I want you to have the time you need to do what it is you need to do...that comes first.  Now, I know I've got somewhat of a tutorial on how you did things.  If you have time to make me up a thorough tutorial (instructions, software used, etc.) at least we might have something to go by if anyone else wants to help out.

CapableMetal did a run @ ANH with video from msycamore....a really nice combination for sure.

Drop me a pm....let me know.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you....I know how rough things can get.

Cheers!!!!

Okay, I got the word from myspleen ..... and the word is GO.  I am working towards getting this uploaded tonight.

On a side note, here is another DTS soundtrack that I'd like to see archived ...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-16mm-Reel-Event-Horizon-Film-Proofs-DTS-Discs-RARE-Digital-/160813895972?_trksid=m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8924031277951131449

did anyone managed to pick this up? I saw this at the cinema 3 times and the audio on the DVD and BD have no where near the impact that it did at the cinema

plus it would give us the chance to correct the slightly wonky AR as well

That's a really interesting and puts some perspective to this project. So is that guy right? Are the only differences in the rear channels?

I remember owning the R6 DVD's of the JP trilogy and it was reported that they were mastered directly from the DTS cinema tracks as well. they sunded very good compared to the R1 DVD i had at the time

I've just recieved a copy of the BD with this preserved DTS track on it. look forward to comparing it actually.

From i've heard so far (only a few mins of it) the amount of work that went into preserving the track is phenomal!!!

I'm sorry to ask this again, but is there a way I can get this DTS-HD MA track so I can sync it with my BD version?

I'd appreciate it very much! Thanks!

found this intresting forum post regarding the BD DTS mixes on JP

http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/showthread.php?15135-Jurassic-Park-Blu-ray-amp-Original-Audio

Disclord seems very knowledgeable about DTS but is very hard to contact.  I am a member of the AVS forums and have tried and failed to connect with him.

His knowledge could only benefit those wanting to work with DTS for preservation/archive projects.

Maybe he'll see or catch wind of us here and find it interesting enough to sign up and offer some assistance.

Hello! I am GregK, and just found this forum and thought this project sounded amazing:

Disclord (Ty) is indeed a hard person to get ahold of. I've had some delightful conversations with him on quad audio, older video formats, including VHD 3-D videodiscs, and have had a lot of conversations of botched video releases where the audio has been altered.

====

Before I forget and speaking of Disclord, I want to mention the Sensurround DVDs, as this sort of thing belong in this thread, being that the original JP mix is a bass lovers delight.

When Universal released the handful of Sensurround titles from the 1970's, Universal released them in Dolby 1.1 (mono with LFE track). The results were less than stellar. I heard Battlestar Galactica in Sensurround during its original theatrical run , and the DVD's LFE track by comparison is certainly lacking. It was Ty who realized Universal had not applied the needed DBX NR to the original Sensurround tracks, so he manually decoded them himself with reportedly stellar results. I don't have access to a DBX type II decoder, but when I imported the AC3 track into my editor and did a significant raise on the LFE, it then sounded a lot better. This also applies to Sensurround encoded DVDs of Midway and Rollarcoster. And what is supposed to be the original 3.1 Sensurround secondary audio track on the Earthquake DVD is a joke. Whatever that secondary 3.1 track is on the Earthquake disc, it isn't true 3 track stereo, nor is it the original sensurround track. Stick with the 5.1 remix for Earthquake and call it a day.

Battlestar Galactica also offered optional directional steering for the low bass, which I can personally attest to working wonderfully. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensurround Sadly, I don't see anyone finding a Sensurround Mod-III type decoder and decoding this track for directional steering anytime soon.
=====

But back to Jurassic Park: A friend locally had owned the DTS laserdisc which sounded amazing. The 1st DTS DVD release of JP had a track that sounded almost identical to the Dolby Digital DVD version, and those listeners who compared it to the DTS laserdisc were (rightfully) having a hissy fit. Universal didn't know what to do, so they inquired with DTS and "requested the mix used for the laserdisc", and DTS supposedly complied. As soon as the limited edition DTS DVD (silent) repress was available, I did my exchange. I don't know if the DTS DVD repress is 100% accurate to the DTS LD (or the DTS theatrical mix), but the bass on that mix is substantially better than both the previous DTS DVD release and the Dolby Digital DVD release. I would love to be able to compare it to this new remuxing effort, if the file is still available somewhere. If anyone has leads or suggestions, please feel free to PM me!

I do remember there were a few DTS variations of the classic first spinning logos intro. I have a DTS trailer disc issued by WSR which has that, as well as a few of the DTS demo discs. I would have to check to see if I have both variations of that first intro. Oddly, my DTS DVD repress of JP uses the Piano DTS trailer instead.

For those looking, if you want to pm me I'll make sure you get a spleen invite.  I will need an e-mail address to send it to.

:)

This project is awesome.  Borisanddoris and ElDonante were instrumental in not only making it happen but also in inspiring me and others to search out DTS cinema audio to make it available for other projects.  Silverwook is also deserving of thanks for helping to acquire 2 of the SE disc sets so they could be worked on.  Capablemetal gets my thanks as well for working on the other audio to help move things forward.

As for that WSR DTS trailer disc....I'd love to get an ISO of that and other demo discs to see how they compare.

I know the chances of anyone else interested in this are slim to none but any chance of getting the DTS track from Evita? Apparently there are some problems with the track on the blu-ray. Several people have complained of distortion.

PM sent!

The WSR/DTS trailer disc is a unique bird, as it was done for Widescreen Review subscribers with the help of DTS. Trailers for a good number of features are on tap, including the first two Jurassic Park movies, all encoded at the DTS 1506 kb/s bitrate. The Lost World trailer in DTS 5.1 is particularly effective.

The DTS demo disc that was given out at one of the CES shows also has a trailer or two - I just need to see which DTS trailer is on my given demo disc.

I wouldn't mind comparing the DTS track from the Apollo 13 Laserdisc compared to the BD version

According to IMDd Evita only had a Dolby Digital sound mix. If this is accurate then there won't be any theater discs floating around on eBay.
