Darth Maul is probably as recognisably Star Warsian as Boba Fett or Jabba.

Whenever I see him on a product I wonder how people are able to associate him with Star Wars, c'mon, he looks like a tattooed guy with horns, a generic devil/demon wannabe... or maybe he dressed up for a German gay parade?

Wasn't that horned Devaronian in the cantina a little bit similar?

On the other hand, I do admit Bobba also looks "generic sci-fi", a typical action-man toy.

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

Suzannah York wasn't in Superman III.

If she had been it might have been a good Superman film and not a bad Richard Pryor comedy.

Suzannah York wasn't in Superman II for plot reasons.

She was there because the producers didn't want to pay Marlon again.

That would be like using a sound sample from the previous film to save money on paying Qui-Gon to appear as a ghost.

If Boba looks generic now, it's because the mysterious guy in a cool armored suit has been done many times since 1978.

There were probably many templates in SF and fantasy at the time, but aside from Commando Cody in the old Republic movie serials, few had been seen on screen before.

Oh, those Japane... err... Jedi robes, yes. That must be the thing. But wasn't that originally used for Kenobi/Vader?

Dress up as Maul and show up next to some religious grannies... I'll bet they'll greet you with "apage, satanas!", not "may the Force be with you" :D

Honestly, average Twi'lek looks more starwars-ish than the utterly boring Maul, who looks like another escaped convict/pervert/alt guitarist, "I have genital piercings too!".

And how many religious grannies are Star Wars fans?

True, but let's face it, Star Wars is 35 year old, twentysomething girl who saw it in 1977 most likely has grandchildren by now.

Nevermind that, Maul looks like a tattooed freak "look mum, I'm a devil!". The amount of f/x makeup work on him is like from the old Star Trek... ("I've got something on my forehead, I look so alien now, noone will recognize me from my previous movies!")

Ignore the PT. Don't try to retcon the PT. Don't try to fit the PT more into the OT. Just tell a story that takes place after the OT.

Let's expand the SW universe, not shrink it further.

Yeah.

Or better still make films based on the Foundation series and forget about Star Wars altogether.

Oh Disney didn't buy those rights.

How many people have a Rubiks cube in the shape of Satan?

The thing is Mauel was a very distinctive look, he did look cool...that shot of him standing behind Palpatine in hologram was menacing. The fact that he wore no armour, his mask was just face-paint meaning that Ray Park could optimise his martial arts ability that made Vader look like a zombie.

Faster more intense....but he was killed off

If he had been kept as the main Sith assassin throughout the movies....he would have maybe made it into the top 100.

So if it doesn't have Padme featured, it won't be Star Wars? Good to know.

Welcome to HYPER-BOWLS.

Of course you could make a film in the Star Wars universe without Padme or any reference to the PT, or the OT for that matter.

I'm merely pointing out that having a maternal trilogy (in the same sense that the OT is a paternal trilogy) is a possibility and one that need not be rubbish.

That characters that aren't good in the PT need not remain that way in a ST.

I also don't think that ignoring the continuity of the first three episodes of a series currently only twice that length is necessary or necessarily desirable as despite my dislike of the PT they are for some as much Star Wars films as the two I really like and the one I like bits of.

I find the resolution of ROTJ actually rather sexist as it stands.

Luke spends a whole trilogy obsessed with his father and mentions his mother in one line (the response to which is rendered bizarro by the PT) an SE would be an ideal way to redress the gender balance a little.

With Leia and Padme being the main representatives of the older generation and Luke and Han being the respectable secondary representatives.

The main weight of the story should be a new generation of characters whatever direction the writers go in but keeping a trail of breadcrumbs through the saga makes it a saga rather than a lose selection of special effects films.

If there is a sharp disconnect to appeal to one group it will be as divisive as what George did with the SE and the PT.

I would also like to see the Foundation books turned into films.

I hear what you are saying but this is a chance for fresh new ideas, the start of perhaps a new trilogy which could get Star Wars its credibility back.

The twist in the OT was that in the second act Luke discovers that the man who he had been told murdered his father was in fact his father, in the third act he became obsessed by his father, not the whole trilogy.

Unless the writers come up with some really fantastic twist involving Padme & Leia, your suggestion of connecting the PT to the ST by making them the 'Maternal Trilogy' does not sound like a successful way to make movies.

If Disney get this right (which I do think they will) they will shift into a higher gear and leave the Prequel stories a distant memory

I don't think so.

The ways that the OT already doesn't jive with the PT are more likely to continue than not.

What I mean is, Luke isn't asked to become Obi-Wan's padiwan, so Luke has never heard that term, so he isn't likely to use it.  Why would he?*

Luke was not instructed to grow a rat tail upon starting his journey to become a Jedi knight, so how would he know of that tradition?  Why would he start it again?*

Luke's never heard of midichlorians.*

Luke's never heard of the Jedi Council.*

Luke's never seen two jedi break-dance-fight.*

No one in the OT mentions that stormtroopers were/are clones.*

No one mentions Naboo, Mustachefar, or the Genesis Planet.*

No one mentions the rule of two.*

No one told Luke that Jedi can't get married.*

No one told Luke that the prequels sucked.*

Why would any of that come up in the SWST?

He is obsessed with his father all the time.

So much so Owen has to tell him to stop going on about it before he even learns he was a Jedi.

His mum on the other hand is only vaguely interesting even to Leia who seems to remember her even though she was only a few minutes old when she died.

Any road up we are chatting not writing the thing.

The real ST will probably be about a Gill Man and a girl with robot legs.

He obviously is hanging on to any thread to find out anything about either of his parents, if Owen had said that Obi-wan had died about the time of Luke's mother, Luke would have had the same reaction.

I don't see Luke running for the Anchorhead Council or the Mos Eisley Parliament so I can't imagine Beru saying, "He has too much of his mother in him".

The OT is about the Father/Son relationship as much as Hamlet is.

Author

I thought the OT was about people fighting wars in space, and had some pseudo-mystical mumbo-jumbo thrown in.

The less this has to do with the PT, the more successful it will be both critically and financially.  Also, the less I have to see Natalie Portman in anything, the less angry I will be. :)

Obviously in his quest to rebuild the Jedi Order, he would find vast repositories of this information that was once being hidden by the now-defunct Empire.

No that was Battlestar Galactica.

Star Wars was about an absent bad dad and his son's attempts to end his homosexual marriage to George Burns.

It's also about paternal mentors manipulating their charges and male friendships which are only interrupted when a woman exposes her cleavage.

He didn't go off yelling 'Yippee' either...ha

The Star Wars fan base is predominantly a male environment, that is the main audience....to take the feminine route would cut the chances of success for the new films.
