Info Wanted: for a manual IVTC?

This really belongs in How-To’s and Technical Discussions, but seeing as it’s relevant to my future Technidisc SWE preservations, I figured that it would be OK to ask here.

Where can I learn how to do Manual IVTC?

I’ve reached out to a few different OT members, but all seem hesitant (or don’t have enough time) to teach me this deep dark art…

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

If I were Britannia I'd waive the rules

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

:)

Where did you learn?

I got my hands on YATTA, but I'm lost.

I wrote a simple guide and a simpler guide in one of Brooks's topics on this forum.  Links below.

Wow, thanks! Your guide is really helpful!

Here are some helper functions I wrote to assist with your method. I haven't tested 'em yet, as I'm not at home, and I assumed YV12...

function SplitFields(clip c)
{
  fields = c.SeparateFields().ScriptClip("Subtitle(string(YDifferenceFromPrevious()))")
  return fields.SelectEven().StackVertical(fields.SelectOdd()).ShowFrameNumber()
}

function FindCombing(clip c)
{
  combed = c.Overlay(c.BlankClip(color=$FF0000), opacity=0.1).Subtitle("Combing!")
  return combed.ConditionalFilter(c, "IsCombedTIVTC", "=", "true").ShowFrameNumber()
}

Sorry if I get this wrong but doesn't all films on VHS, laserdisc or just any format have a cadence like 3:2? Or is it only on DVDs?

Because I know I've seen some IVTC plugins for avisynth which only needs to be set to 3:2 or something and it will remove all unnecessary frames.

This should be the case, but sometimes the cadence changes.

As AntcuFaalb said, the pattern sometimes changes...especially on analog sources.  In my limited experience, some of the AviSynth plugins will occasionally get confused on the first frame or two of a pattern change and dish-out a few blended frames.

Also, because of the additionally video noise on analog sources (VHS, LD, etc.), some plugins can fail to lock onto the 3:2 pattern because they read that noise as movement.

Oh I see. Too bad. That means one has to go through a complete manual IVTC on all Laserdiscs? Now I suddenly appreciate all the LD projects on this site a LOT more... haha

yeah manual IVTC is some work but more or less the only way to do it if you want it done properly.

if only the GOUT had had it done that way it would've been so much better.

AntcuFaalb, I can tell you that ANH - Technidisc will at least be a piece of cake for you, IIRC there wasn't any changes in cadence, never encountered an easier LD to IVTC.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

And, in most cases with other titles, the changes occur at the point of reel-change.

The only exception I can think of are Extended Versions and Director's Cuts that were edited on video, not film.  Things like the DC of "The Alamo" or the TV Cut of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".
