To that I say, good luck waiting.  I'm gonna watch 2.0 while you do.  :)

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

I believe this has been asked here before but I'll ask anyway. I'm trying to burn the remastered version of Harmy's DeSpecialized edition to DVD but I want to include the audio tracks. Not all of them. Mainly the 1977 5.1 mix, the 1977 mono, 1993 mix, commentary etc. I also want to customly make my chapters so it matches the chapters of the original file. So far the only program I've found thats allowing me to do this is ConvertXtoDVD. The DVD came out okay but its a bit boxy in some areas (quite noticeably in the opening Fox/Lucasfilm credits). Any of you know of any good programs that will allow me to customize the DVD the way I want and still come out good on the DVD? I don't own a Blu-Ray player so I can't make a Blu-Ray disc. Thanx.

I think it has been mentioned elsewhere, but you won't get good results trying to recompress an already compressed mpeg2 file:  Harmy only gets good results because he encodes directly to a target format from a high quality source.

If you already have the DVD9 version, why not keep it at that quality level?

It is possible to reconstitute the DVD9 video with different audio and chapters (as long as the overall size isn't any larger), however it would be complex and a real PITA if you don't have professional software if you want to retain menus.  Here's one way to do it with freeware, ignoring menus, but it may be possible to do it in one step with TsMuxer:

1. Demux the main movie vob files into their component video, audio and subtitle streams with eac3to.

2. Recombine the required video, audio and subtitle streams and add chapter points to create new vob and ifo files with Ifoedit.

Alternatively, if you just want to remove extra audio tracks and retain existing chapter points, use DVDshrink on the movie title of the original DVD9 (although I question why you would do this when it's effectively the same as the original DVD9).

If you are happy to select the desired audio track to play, manually, using the DVD player, without menus, then simply burn this movie-only version to DVD9.

If you want to include any extras, then use DVDshrink to add the movie-only title and then any other titles from the original DVD9.  Because there are no menus, each title will automatically playback in sequence, unless the DVD player has the ability to jump directly to a title.  You might also want to use AddChapter to add a blank chapter at the end of each title (unless it already has one) to make it quicker to jump to the next title with the DVD player's Next button.

If you want menus, the original menus can be modified, but it requires a comprehensive understanding of DVDs and menu structure and IMO is more trouble than it is worth (especially since the audio track menu labels must be altered to match the revised movie).

My suggestion would be to create a movie-only DVD9 with the soundtracks you want, as a complement to the original DVD9.  You would have to use the DVD player audio navigation feature to manually select a different soundtrack than the default first one, but it isn't that problematic.

There is no DVD-9.  He was talking about converting Harmy's HD version to DVD.  My DVD-5 is on a.b.starwars and (apparently) myspleen.

My apologies:  I was getting confused with the different versions floating around.  It's the AVCHD version that is on a DVD-9, not an mpeg2 DVD version.

Well, now that I read this a bit closer it would seem that you're wanting to put the audio "you" want to hear with Harmy's video, while retaining the DVD9 menu's for a DVD5?

I'm not sure you'll be able to just port over that menu without issue.  This is not my forte but I believe you won't be able to use just one "fix all" program for this.  It's going to take a little work and patience.

No I'm not trying to retain the menus. I'm trying to burn the mkv file to a dvd. However, I would still like the DVD to include the additional audio tracks and I would also like the quality to still be fair. The only program that I've used so far that has allowed to include the audio tracks is ConvertXtoDVD. I tried it and it work what the quality was a bit boxy in some areas. The program I prefer to burn DVDs with is Nero but Nero will wont incorporate the other soundtracks, only one.

@ crissrudd

You should try multiAVCHD.  This program specializes in all things HD.  I've converted many HD files to SD-DVD with it and you should be able to use all the audio tracks you desire.

Sorry to bother you experts with a novice question....

But I just found this and got super excited to watch it... so now that I'm trying to stream the file to my PS3, I'm not getting any audio. Video yes, audio no. All the other PS3 audio works, so I know it's just the mkv causing the problem.

Not only did I use Google to look for a solution, but I also used the search bar for these forums and it didn't find "stream" or "ps3" when I searched for it, so I apologize in advance if I'm asking a question that has been answered ad nauseum.

How are you streaming the video to the PS3?  I'm pretty sure the latest version of PS3 Media Server worked fine with this.

@ircphoenix, I used to stream to my PS3 all the time before I built an XBMC setup.

PS3 Media Server to stream content is definitely easiest way to go.  But an MKV will always have to be transcoded on-the-fly because it's not a format recognized by the PS3.  Transcoding forces your server machine to do a lot of extra work and if that machine is underpowered it can result in dropouts, etc.

The tool that became indispensable for me was MKV2VOB:

http://www.mkv2vob.com/showthread.php?tid=1

This little program will REMUX the MKV into and VOB or MPG container without re-encoding the video and sacrificing quality.  As a result, PS3 Media Server can stream the new VOB file to the PS3 without the need for transcoding and the processing overhead it requires.

Also note that MKV2VOB will force you to pick one audio track for your remuxed file, AND if you choose to add subtitles the software will have to re-encode the entire file with hard subs (again PS3 limitation) resulting in a generational loss.

Ideally, remuxing an MKV without re-encoding takes virtually no time at all.

I hope this helps.  Enjoy Harmy's excellent work!

I will try what you just suggested when I get home. I tried re-encoding but for whatever reason xvid4psp hung at 99% for 22 hours.

And I am using PS3 Media Server to stream. I'll double check to make sure I have the latest version, as I installed it a while ago and don't know that I've updated it.

That could be the problem. I don't think my machine at home is underpowered... as I'm using my PC to act as a server, and my PC is a rather robust build.

If I'm reading it correctly, if the PS3 streaming isn't working properly, then I need to use MKV2VOB? Or am I going to have to use that program regardless?

That is excellent advice you have given me and I greatly appreciate it. I'll be back to let you know how it turns out!!!

Thanks again!

Hi ircphoenix. If you can get PS3 Media Server to work, you should not need to use MKV2VOB. I was able to successfully stream Harmy's Despecialized 2.0 to my PS3 using PS3 Media Server 1.7. The audio and video both worked.

This may sound like a stupid question, but does the Despecialized audio work okay on your computer? (The reason I ask is, when I first downloaded 2.0, I had a bad copy.) Also, you mention that "the other PS3 audio works"—do you mean that you hear audio from other videos using PS3 Media Server, or are you talking about game audio, etc.? If you meant game audio, you might want to try playing another video just to see if it works.

If it still won't play, I agree with Schmendrick, remuxing the video into a PS3 friendly AVCHD, .mp4, .vob, or a .ts video is your best bet. As he/she said, unless subtitles are important, I would only re-encode the video as a last resort. It's time consuming and you'll lose quality.

Hope this helps!

The Despecialized audio works perfectly on my computer. Just doesn't seem to want to work through the PS3 into my TV.

And the other PS3 audio I was referring to is games and the clicks and ticks that the system makes when scrolling through various menus. I *think* I remember streaming video before to the TV, but I could be mistaken.

Subtitles are definitely not something I'm interested in, so a lot of what people have said about those have totally gone way over my head... and ideally I won't have to worry about it once I see if the PS3 Media Server is updated to the latest version. I didn't want to have to re-encode anyway, so it's heartening to see that if everything goes as planned, I won't have to.

Again, thanks everyone for your continued input and when I get home in 20 mins I'll let you know what worked/didn't work.

Hi everyone and THANKS Harmy for this incredible job!

Just wondering, is there a chance to get these classic pieces without fixed subtitles?. It becomes a bit confusing when subtitles in other language are selected.

Thanks a lot and regards from Spain!

Hi, everyone,

Just wanted to throw a HUGE thank you to Harmy for this massive undertaking.  Truly a labor of love, and it has introduced me to this whole fan edit/preservation community, which has lead to my USB thumb-drive becoming accidentally write-protected with the Star Wars Despecialized versions filling it up (which I mind not at all) as well as my girlfriend almost dumping me because I won't shut up about Star Wars.  Totally worth it.

Thanks!

I know that feeling, my girlfriend would rather not be overwhelmed by my enthusiasm for it which is only a small compromise while there's still appreciation to be had.
