They did a simple 4k scan of the nitrate negative.  They did no cleanup work and no 8k as for other films that they have done.

It was simply a way to preserve the negative so when it goes bye bye like steamboat willie at least they have the digital files.

Is there any point doing an 8k scan on a 1.37:1 35mm?
I thought 4k was the limit of detail for that stock and 8k is used for wider formats.

As an FYI, a copy of the BBC broadcast is up on myspleen... :)

There was a copy of the BBC broadcast floating around a few years ago that had some awful interlacing. Is this the version that's up at spleen?

Yup. That's the only BBC copy I'm aware of. I believe that ALL copies of the BBC SOTS have the weird interlacing issue.

I've recently acquired a piece of equipment that will capture 16mm film and it''s audio really well.

Exactly what piece of equipment do you have?

Elmo TRV-16G

That should do an amazing job of capturing the film! From what I've read, Elmos are pretty much the Cadillac of the projector world. I've never had any trouble with my 16-CL after it was serviced.

A Japanese LD copy is up at the spleen. That makes 3 copies there: PAL VHS, BBC, and Japan LD! :)

@perkyporker: What problems are you having upgrading the TRV-16G? Does it have the terrible degrading pinch rollers like the 16-CL?

Thought it might be useful to post a summary, seeing as this thread was started over two years ago.

Song of the South DVD versions

• Piratebay/mininova (superhappyfun?) version - sourced from Japanese laserdisc, has burned-in subtitles during the songs.

• “Coal Black Easter Egg” Version & Cyber-EFX version - both sourced from Hong Kong/Korean/Chinese LD or UK VHS, no-one knows exactly. No burned-in subtitles, but poor video quality. Small selection of extras.

• Mentor version - barebones DVD encode, sourced from DVB cap off BBC broadcast. Best picture quality, but some interlacing/blending issues with PAL conversion.

• Doctor M, JoeyO & Rowman 2-DVD release - disc one is the movie sourced from Mentor's DVD and restored to NTSC, disc two features a comprehensive selection of extras and special features.

I think these are the main versions out there, if I've got anything wrong, please post in this thread.

Thanks for this list, it's what I was looking for.

Is the Doctor M/JoeyO/Rowman version of the BBC broadcast available anywhere? I see the original Mentor release is available on myspleen, but I'd prefer it in NTSC. Thanks!

As the TRV-16G comes, it is only capable of capturing video tape quality. An upgrade will allow it to capture at dvd quality.

I haven't done an inspection of the unit since I am sending it in for an upgrade.  The thing looks like it has never been  used.

Right now, I'm just saving up for the upgrade and trying to decide who to send it to.

Does anyone have a link for this 2 disc version?

Just thought I'd post this: I uploaded a corrected copy of the BBC version to Myspleen a few months ago. It was mildly color adjusted as well as deinterlaced and converted from PAL to NTSC.

By "deinterlaced", do you mean restored to 24fps? If so, how?

Not 24fps to my knowledge; I actually didn't do the work. An AV friend of mine did the work in exchange for a copy of the film. It is pretty good! I am working on getting an LPP print telecined, so maybe I will have that to add in the next few months, as well.

Maybe you could ask your AV friend to explain what he did. It's of interest to a few of us on here because we've been trying to work out a way to deal with the field-blending on the Ewoks VHS captures (also a flaky PAL conversion).

OK, let me dig up the email.

I just sifted through all of our communication, and it looks like he used SRestore plus another tool which he apparently made.

I sent another email asking him to describe what he did, so if he gets back to me, I will post it.

SRestore is for converting telecined 25 fps PAL material back to 23.976 NTSC.

Author

Oh, then I guess it was back to 24fps. I just assumed that it was converted to 29.973, but that's what you get for assuming. :)

I just happen to be aware of it because some of my friends deal in restoring PAL telecine for anime where the European and/or Australian DVDs are better than other sources.

 (Edited)

Would anyone be open to snail-mailing me a copy of this new color corrected BBC conversion that's on myspleen? Unfortunately, I don't have the access or fast enough connection to get it myself.

Thanks.

Hi, according to this article, any patron of the Uncle Remus Museum in Eatonton can buy/get a good and legal copy of the SOTS film, and guess what, Disney asses aprove this, according to the article. Anybody here can get to this museum and share this copy with us for preservation sake ?

The hunt is open now !

I may be mistaken, but I'll mention it just in case. I think I have another copy of it, which looks like a VHSrip. (It still looks fairly good, though.) It's encoded to be NTSC. If I recall, it's obtainable on Fenopy, as a VIDEO_TS folder. Did any of the other ones mentioned have a menu? The one I have does, and I'd be willing to post screenshot(s) for confirmation and/or comparison.

Interesting article, but a little vague as to the quality of the DVD being sold. Or whether it's actually legal.

And there are a lot more than two SOTS cels floating around outside the vault, believe me.

Sure, that would be great! It's always interesting to see new versions...

As far as the other DVD, I would be surprised if it is anything better than a bootleg. They don't say that they got it from Disney, but rather from one of their book sources. Also, as SilverWook says, there are a lot more than 2 cels floating around - I personally have three and some storyboard sketches; that doesn't make me "licensed by Disney." I thought that whole article was slightly off...
