It's not a new BD, it's just new packaging.
I'm putting up a new thread about the movie (or now, the new BD release) since some info was going to the audio thread. So it seems that Lowry screwed this one, too, even though the image quality is better. And no mono soundtrack.
Damn, it's getting hard to collect BDs from my favorite movies since there's about 50/50 chance they're screwing them up somehow. Seems to me that the more non-mainstream films are getting more truthful transfers.

^Nah, Fink. In the UK they actually got a new transfer. We are not so lucky.

There are more countries than UK in Europe...

It's not my fault I only read US review sites. :p

now why in the name of hell would they release a new transfer in the UK, but not in America?
And I agree with LexX, I find it unacceptably ridiculous that there are so many messed up blu rays released. Why is it so difficult for the studios, with all the money and resources at their disposal, to get these blu rays right? I have multiple blu rays in my collection that there is exchange program set up for them because they were originally released messed up. One is for a messed up menu, another is for a fade to black at a time when there is not supposed to be a fade to black. Another I had to wait to buy because the original release had an audio synch error. Then there are all the releases messed up by over use of DNR. And then there is Star Wars. Why can't the studios stop these mistakes from happening in the first place? And why can't they make sure DNR is applied is a reasonable and responsible manner?
another thing I can't stand is the fact that many of the extras from the DVD release are not ported over. why? I say all DVD extras should be ported over.

Exactly. And sometimes when they bother to include a DVD with the extras and even those are always removed from releases outside the US. Pisses me off. I know it's the depression but jeez, throw us a bone here.

That some Universal titles apparently look better on HD DVD than the DNR heavy Blu Ray versions is both funny and sad.
Where were you in '77?
yes indeed.
Does anyone know if this will be released in the US?

Also, what's up with the colortiming? Is the new transfer more or less like the theatrical release?

I suspect less. It certainly looks to me like the new transfer has suffered from a modern teal-and-orange digital colour grading.

It definitely looks out-of-whack, but I'm not a good judge of color, as I tend to prefer over-saturation and reds.

Oh joy. More of that.
“Grow up. These are my Disney's movies, not yours.”
But I have to say, the first transfer doesn't have that good colors, either. The "right" colors would be somewhere in the between. Because of the better clarity I'd prefer this new one... But this should still be fixed with the audio track at some point. Maybe 30th anniversary?!

I expect they'll do what's right for the 30th anniversary and let's face it: they're going to want the money!

I think the backlash here is mainly because it is falling into the teal-and-orange trap. Which is a bit unfortunate. Like many 80s movies, the colour palette should be closer to blue-and-red, because that was the teal-and-orange of the 80s. But anyway, in many of the screens so far the new transfer is way better and more accurate than the old one. Rather dramatic differences like the close-up of Reese could have easily been meant to have originally looked like that--but more on the blue-side rather than slightly teal--because that's how all nightime scenes in Cameron films look, and in this case it was probably shot neutral and meant to be timed in post to be blue, but the previous colorist didn't know that and left it raw. This happens all the time in transfers. Frankly the older one looks a bit like shit, the new one just seems a bit too modernized in some places but I think the difference is not gigantic. Overall these look fantastic, with some reservations.
I'm still confused though, is this available in the US and Canada? I've held off buying the film on BD because my DVD looks about the same but this is enough of an improvement to justify spending twenty dollars, and it's one of my favourite films.
I read that the US version is identical to the previous BD, except for the packaging.

Sure.
This thread helps to remind me of why I am a DVD-content man.
Thing is, I think it might be easier to correct a teal tint than overdone reds by calibrating your TV to fit your preferences. I have mine usually set to pretty warm whenever I watch movies, though I tend to switch it with cartoons.
I think the old blu-ray satisfies me enough though, as Terminator isn't one of my favorite films or anything. Yeah, it's good, but nothing I really *need* in high-quality. I'd probably be happy with it on a crap VHS, even.
