One actual calibration question: How in the heck does one do some kind of setting for LD without an actual video essentials LD setting disc? I've tried every setting and still wind up tweaking all levels for every different disc.

Is there a recommended setting or ballpark guess for contrast, color, and brightness?

I actually got a better looking LD picture on the old curved little 19" crt I had previously. This set seems to magnify any and all flaws. Especially on 2.35 films in CLV. Very noisy in places.

It's a ballpark, it's all in your preference. Just follow these steps

brightness, contrast.

The new T.V.s(LCD,LED, PLASMA'S,and OLED)  are a lot different than the CRT. The new T.V.s are High definition and the CRT are Standard definition, that being said, H.D. picks up film grain which is part of film(not talking about over sharping either) that's why it's noisy. But If your T.V. sharpness is over 50% please lower it to 40%-25%.

I hope this helps.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

I hate to be pedantic but there isn't anything intrinsically SD about CRT screens (there are plenty of HD CRT screens).

In fact I'm tempted to get one so I can keep playing my light gun games of yore.

But, what if your sharpness is under 50% ?

So, I should set my sharpness to 15% ?**

if there were such thing as 1080p CRTs I'd be all over one. I really miss Duck Hunt... I have a smaller TV around for it, but it's just not the same. Plus, that leaves five TVs for three people back home - so it's probably going to get trashed soon. :(

Yes that's what I mean. If you sit close to the T.V. (8FT) sharpness should be 25%, siting faraway 45%(20FT)

I'm not sure about 1080p (though there is no technological reason why it shouldn't be possible) but there are definitely 1080i slimline CRT tellys (not a great example but an example none the less).

^That's what I've heard. They haven't been on the market in the US for a number of years, though, and buying a used CRT is not really a good investment - considering it could just go out one day. Although, to be fair, what I find hilarious about new TVs is they're basically computerized to the point where it will freeze! Sometimes I've gotten stuck on a menu and there's nothing I can do... not even turn off the TV from the buttons on the side.

There is money to be had if some boffin can invent a retro lightgun adapter for flatscreens.

Wrong thread, actual calibration questions would be better posted in the Technical Discussion forum.

But to answer, some laserdiscs have test patterns or SMPTE colour bars on blank, unused sides. Look through your collection.

And lightguns don't work with HD CRTs, although IIRC there was one for the PS that was designed to work with 100Hz TVs.

yeah, well there are some possibilities:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06cd5y5l1Ns

you need an external scaler, and some other

equipment.

more talk over here:

back to calibration though

----------------------------------

probably need to invest in some real actual

hardware if you are serious about getting your

screens to look right.

i've thought about getting some hardware

like the spyder or the x-rite

some models on ebay:

has anyone bought or tried these out?

maybe a mid-priced model would be

good to test out.. (or a used one).

Nuts! Most of my lightgun games are for consoles other than my Sony ones.

Thanks for saving me hundreds of quid though.

the spyder main site:

their products:

==========

http://spyder.datacolor.com/products/

for instance the spyder 4pro:

=====================

  • Automated Color & Brightness Calibration
-Spyder4PRO’s simple, clear and automated process makes it straightforward to calibrate your displays to a reference condition. You can view and edit images with confidence on a display calibrated to show true-to-life colors and luminance adjusted for precise shadow/highlight detail.
  • Full-spectrum color sensor -Spyder4PRO’s patented 7-color sensor improves upon colorimeters that use 3-channel RGB sensors. Each Spyder4PRO unit is individually tuned in the factory to accurately handle a variety of wide-gamut and normal gamut displays with ease.
  • Single sensor calibrates all your displays –
Spyder4PRO works with your laptop, multiple monitors, iPad and even iPhone. It works with LCD, LED, OLED, CRT, Retina Display, and other display technologies. You can calibrate multiple displays connected to your computer.
  • Improved accuracy and stability -
The fourth-generation Spyder4PRO has double-shielded color filters for an even closer match to CIE color standards and improved long term stability. Average accuracy increased by 26% and consistency between Spyder units has improved 19%.
  • Fast Re-calibration Assistant -The “ReCAL” feature makes it quick and easy to recalibrate your display to compensate for changes that occur over time.
  • Adapts display to surrounding light -The lighting around you will affect image contrast and appearance. An additional sensor on the Spyder4Pro detects changes to surrounding light and adapts the display luminance accordingly.

although it's for use mostly through a computer,

since most tv's/monitors  have inputs from computers

you can use them with those also..
