I actually got a better looking LD picture on the old curved little 19" crt I had previously. This set seems to magnify any and all flaws. Especially on 2.35 films in CLV. Very noisy in places.

  It's a ballpark, it's all in your preference. Just follow these steps

The new T.V.s(LCD,LED, PLASMA'S,and OLED)  are a lot different than the CRT. The new T.V.s are High definition and the CRT are Standard definition, that being said, H.D. picks up film grain which is part of film(not talking about over sharping either) that's why it's noisy.But If your T.V. sharpness is over 50% please lower it to 40%-25%.

if there were such thing as 1080p CRTs I'd be all over one. I really miss Duck Hunt... I have a smaller TV around for it, but it's just not the same. Plus, that leaves five TVs for three people back home - so it's probably going to get trashed soon. :(

  Yes that's what I mean. If you sit close to the T.V. (8FT) sharpness should be 25%, siting faraway 45%(20FT)   

^That's what I've heard. They haven't been on the market in the US for a number of years, though, and buying a used CRT is not really a good investment - considering it could just go out one day. Although, to be fair, what I find hilarious about new TVs is they're basically computerized to the point where it will freeze! Sometimes I've gotten stuck on a menu and there's nothing I can do... not even turn off the TV from the buttons on the side.

Wrong thread, actual calibration questions would be better posted in the Technical Discussion forum.

But to answer, some laserdiscs have test patterns or SMPTE colour bars on blank, unused sides. Look through your collection.

And lightguns don't work with HD CRTs, although IIRC there was one for the PS that was designed to work with 100Hz TVs.

although it's for use mostly through a computer,

since most tv's/monitors  have inputs from computers

you can use them with those also..
