An inspiring and hopeful project.....
Seeing as Lucas is a billionaire if he wanted it he could have the best scanning equipment money could buy.
But you already know that.
It is more of a is it worth it for him money wise considering the expense of restoring the version he would prefer stay buried.
Because the version of the trilogy my generation despises with Hayden at the end is the version that broke BD sales records, nail in coffin.

I kinda doubt this will ever be used for the OOT but I'm all for making high-quality film scans cheaper. There's tons of old TV shows and animation that deserve a release in HD but don't have a huge fanbase to make them financially viable.
Maybe if this scanner gets made it'll be used for the Droids and Ewoks cartoons :D

Yep. Just more proof that we've lost.

Yeah, we have the preservations here, but the problem is that money always talks. Since Lucas is a billionaire, he sadly gets a louder voice than everybody else. (a la Citizens United)
Maybe they're doing great work, but OOT fans are a small clique now, the version of the film that Lucas wants to be the one known in the public consciousness is the one that's winning. Years down the road few people will know about fan-preservation efforts and they certainly won't preserve films, IMO, at least not in the long-term.

Depends on how you define OOT fans.
Certainly people who like the OOT enough to do something about it (ot.com community) are a small clique, but there are also at least two other types of OOT fans:
1) Those who love the OOT, but have been so discouraged by the SE's that they've given up on Star Wars entirely, let their VHS tapes rot away in the basement, and haven't watched it in well over a decade.
2) Those who love the OOT, and tolerate the SE's as the closest thing they can get to what they want.
Until quite recently, I was type #1. The difference is knowledge. Yes, Lucas has the louder megaphone, but you only have to see the Despecialized Edition once to know it's considerably better than any commercial offering. Conversion is easy--just show a friend. In the past week, I've already turned OOT fans of both types I've described above into OOT fans as you would describe them, and I don't plan to stop.
Mr. Lucas can't hear you - he's taking a bath in his money a la Scrooge McDuck.
“Grow up. These are my Disney's movies, not yours.”
Regardless of the preservations, we still haven't won against GL. I hate to see a future where all that is left of the OOT is these preservations just because of one man's arrogance and contempt. That's what I hate about the present: anyone with enough money can override public opinion. Most people love SW because of the OOT, and we have had the SE supplant it for 15 years now; no one deserves this. Sadly in another 15 years whatever current version of the SE will still be the official version of the OT. My hatred for George Lucas knows no bounds for what he did to those three films, in spite of all the fans' effort to preserve them.

you mean 'YOU' haven't won against GL..
anyone that can't admit that we're fine now, wants
to be defeatist, and along with the rest of the people
that can't see what's going on, deserve to feel that way.
WHO CARES ABOUT PUBLIC OPINION!
we have our own money, and have done plenty to get
to the point we're at. we don't need lucasfilm, 20th century
fox, or any of those other entities...
it's almost game over for this topic..
i'm already there.. and everyone else
that wants it, will have access to it also.
it's just a matter of time now..

George Lucas is still arrogant and has committed a serious error in suppressing the OOT like this. No amount of preservations is going to change that. The OT does not deserve to be pushed underground like this and have the SE take its place with the general public not knowing the difference. Hell, on the Blu-rays themselves they no longer advertise that they are different editions from the theatrical releases! In five years time the SE will have been around as long as the OOT. You can ignore public opinion, but you cannot ignore the root cause of why this website and these forums exist, because Lucas refuses to release the originals out of some sadistic contempt with his fans, who by the way have made him a billionaire twice over (even though he is one of the least deserving men to have all that wealth). His arrogance is the very reason I act like an defeatist half the time on these forums! The institution that has shaped the SW franchise since 1997 must be torn down. And, I'm sorry to break it to you, fan preservations are not going to do it.

i understand what you are saying from that point of you.
in fact, i agree with most of what you are saying too..
so for that part, i empathize with you.
however, instead of living with NOTHING, and refusing to
try to change the situation. i decided to be more proactive,
and take things into my own hands..
for the people that are open to the idea that we CAN
have something that is beyond anything else out there,
given the short amount of time we had, and the limited
resources.. i'm perfectly happy, and most of the other
people that check it out will be too...
you never know what will come up in the future,
if you really want a new hope, you have to believe
in it first...

Except having a preferred version for me to personally watch at home is only one aspect. (It's a big thing obviously but not everything.) If I had my private screening room and a flawless 70mm print that would be awesome for me and I would share it any way I could. But, separately from that, this other issue still exists where, if you are rich enough, you can alter what kids think the 70s and 80s looked like. (and a lot of adults too). Ponder that for a second, it's just...creepy.

Steve is the guy who restored Raiders score for DCC classics in the 90's for an audiophile LP and a standard cd and gold issue CD.
He is not Ben Burtt, but i think he did ask why have they not restored the original trilogy scores or something to that effect for star wars when he got the indy project.
No answer was given obviously.
Audiophile releases of the star wars trilogy newly restored from the earliest elements and album masters/stems on LP and CD would have been great.

I have a hard time believing the OOT will remain suppressed indefinately. Some time from now, long after Charon ferries Lucas across the River Styx, Lucasfilm will probably restore the theatrical films to the best of their ability and release them. Perhaps they won't be of the greatest quality, but at least they'll be acknowledged. A number of surviving films from the early eras of cinema don't come wrapped in the prettiest of ribbons, but people still watch and enjoy them.

at this point, does anyone really care if it's from
lucasfilm or not? why do we really need their
stamp on it for legitimacy when they've shown
they can't and won't handle it in the past?

I think the reason people want it that way is that
a.) lucasfilm can probably make a cleaner looking product in the end (if done well you can really make films look clean AND stil retain details and stuff)
Especially since they have the o-negs, depending on your definition of "original". (e.g. matte lines etc)
b.) a lucasfilm release is less likely to get lost over the years than a pirate copy fanscan is. Even if it's distributed widely.

I am not exactly a fan of Hoffman's mastering of Raiders, the choir is reduced to almost nothing, and the Tuba's are wayy too prominent.
John Williams score to Return of the Jedi Remastered/Remixed:

Then it is the original mix you aren't a fan of. It has nothing to do with Hoffman's mastering, which is superb. What you hear is a difference between original film mix vs. album master mix.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com
Plus Lucasfilm made those three movies. WE expect them to give us those movies on DVD/Blu-ray, not show them to us and then decide not to show it to us any more on a whim.

You're funny.
For some reason negative1's poetry is much sweeter to my eyes lately.
My anger against George Lucas knows no bounds. People have the fallacy that these are just movies like every other movie in existence. That is wrong. The OT is so woven into to the fabric of culture so quickly that it is important to humanity as air and water. So GL's decision to let these films to become permanently lost like this is not only negligent, but it is one of the most offensive things one can do that does not involve harming another human being. You know lucasilm will never release the originals ever agin after the GOUT. He only released that just for his own sadistic pleasure. It is clear to me that he secretly hates the whole franchise and whises misery on all who liked it. That's why he made the prequels, to reap money off fans while giving us some non-union job hackwork. The OT that future generations will see is just some imposter that distorts history like a soviet era photograph. I hate him more for doing this to us than for him making the films in the first place. Why didn't you just go in racing like you originally wanted to?
