However, less (or no) cropping would be helpful to someone wanting to do stabilization work on the grindhouse version.

They're already stabilizing the film, using the sprocket information.

In other words, each individual frame you are taking is somewhere in-between 2K and 4K res, but for coloring and cleanup work you are using a downsample because that will be faster and yield similar results to doing all your editing at the higher (let's call it 3K) resolution, only to have to size it down anyway at the end, for home video.

yes, thats a better way of stating what i was trying to get at! phew..

here's a small image of what the differences in sizes are.. very

substantial!

DVD is looking pretty pitiful down there in the corner.  What's VHS the equivalent to, like 240 pixels wide?  Something like that?

just wanted to let you guys know..

thanks for all the offers for help and hardware.

actually the team is doing all the hard work on

their machines.. i just use mine for previewing.

=================================

both team members are getting either a major

hardware upgrade/ram/video and more hard

drives to handle these tasks..

remember, our philosophy is that we will NEVER

ask for one cent from anyone for any of this.. or

to fund the costs, travel, or support... that's the

point, we'll take care of it, so you don't have to

worry about it..

the work is going at a linear pace, so there's

no easy way to speed things up, and why would

we want to? it's the attention to detail and care

that need to be done that way to ensure its done

to the best of our abilities...

hang in there, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I've watched a few of them, but obviously the stuff from the reel you won't be using isn't as interesting as the real deal B)

No puns, please.

^Exactly. My major thoughts when watching these is that with all their flaws and imperfections its nice to see it looking like film again. As with puggo's preservations its very nostalgic to see film like contrast and depth to the picture.

How much smoother, jumpy wise are the further corrections Neg?

Same goes for me, -1!

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

My thoughts exactly.  We're definitely checking them out.  I don't know if vimeo offers view statistics?  I bet they're pretty high.

I'm impressed by the detail, like how you can see Leia's stray hairs in the Leia acting like a princess clip!

Same goes for me. My thoughts are also, "If the red reel looks this good, what does the LPP look like?" Great job -1. Can't wait to see the final product.

yes, it does have stats..

most people are looking at the crawl!

i'm curious, not to take away from this,

but don't the dvd's and blurays have that much or more detail?

i've watched both on those formats, and those seemed

pretty darn detailed to me too!!

or are you saying that the detail in the 720p transfer from

the 35mm is better than you thought? because the 1080p

version is way better!

It's definitely got the detail and that film look, the colors are all that's wrong, besides a few of the film glitches.  It's interesting that even after film is digitized it still has a film like look to it.  Why is that I wonder?

Yeah that's it exactly.  I know the blu rays have crazy detail but they also have all the horrible changes.  I'm more or less thinking of the gout as the point of comparison and this is looking prettier to me.  I can't wait to see the full 1080p, this is definitely going to be the new standard for people to strive to beat.

Probably because you can still see (subconsciously) the grain structure. It hasn't been DVNRed to death, so it breathes...

Also, when I said it looked good, I meant compared to what's out there. For non-film people, the difference between Eastman and LPP doesn't make as much concrete sense, but if you've ever worked with the two, as I have, believe me when I say that LPP is miles beyond Eastman as far as color. The final version will be awesome, I just know it.

-1, I think this has been said before, but I'm pretty sure your project has decimated the GOUT. I think that for OOT, yours should be base 1 for anyone using frames or clips (like Harmy did) from the GOUT.

Great job!

you have to remember, these are just

unfinished versions coming off the red test reel..

the real corrections done to the LPP are night

and day in stability, color, and clean up..

Hi negative1, I'm a lurker who just had to make an account for this topic.

These tests are excellent, and there are many people who see and appreciate them without commenting.

Keep up the amazing work, and if you're going to be making your efforts available only to those expressing interest, sign me up! (Don't know how that system works)

In any case, thank you for saving Star Wars!

Just an idea that's probably been discussed elsewhere:

If you had two or more 35mm prints of a movie, both in poor condition (scratches, blurring), would it not be possible to scan both of them and merge the frames using an algorithm?

I'm thinking of something like the X0 project, so it would probably be time consuming in the extreme, but would this even be theoretically possible?

Digitising doesn't take away the look of film. Star Wars looks so bad because it's had every single property of film - what makes film look like film - stripped away from it. The retimed colour is the least of it's issues. The biggest issue is the massive dynamic range compression coupled with excessive contrast boosting. The result is a high-contrast yet, paradoxically, flat image. There is no depth. Additionally, its been edge sharpened, the clipping is some of the worst I've seen and the grain structure is poorly resolved. I have loads of Blu-rays which represent the look of film accurately. If you check out any release by Criterion you will see how film-to-video transfer should be done. Warner and Fox (excluding Patton) catalogue titles are also outstanding.

This preservation is far and away the most important because it's the only one (that we have access to) that will represent this film the way it was originally screened. It's being done professionly and with great attention to detail. And it looks like film. In fact, these guys are doing a better job than a lot of big studios and its no understatement to say, looking at the level of damage to some of these clips, that their accomplishments are outstanding.

@NeverarGreat: That is very much practically possible. But in order to do so, you need an insane amount of computing power and insanely good software.
