why can't let just leave their movies alone when they are finished?
Not sure if this is true, or a belated April Fools' article:

I heard its true, along with some wire removal on people/items as the ship is sinking, but those were from people in the theater from memory. This is the only one that has any press.
Cameron fixed some wires and such for the Aliens Blu-ray, I think he's going with the "fixing subtle things is ok" route.

Just re-releasing it in 3D is a way of altering the film, so it's not meant to be the original '97 Titanic anyway. But I agree, it's a disturbing trend and I'm afraid we haven't seen the end of it.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

As a 13-year-old I made a commitment to never see Titanic.
Still going strong on that.
“Grow up. These are my Disney's movies, not yours.”
While I'm saddened by this in one respect, Titanic isn't exactly close to my heart. A fix like that is akin to removing the reflection from the glass in the snake pit in Raiders as far as I'm concerned. But hey, what do I know? I'm just a kid.

I like Cameron's Titanic and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
However, the 2012 TV miniseries has been pretty shit so far.

It's a bit rich if he fiddles with the film to get the stars right in a scene with fictional characters but keeps the scenes which defame real life characters.
I read the change he made, and all I can think is "meh."

there's a miniseries going on about the Titanic? What channel is this on?

Apparently only shown in the UK, Ireland and Canada.

ah, that's why I know nothing about it.

I do too.
As long as the original version of the scene is also included on the Blu-ray, I have no problems with this change. It doesn't sound as if it ruins the scene, and I doubt I would even have noticed.
I'm going to say it won't be included. Aliens didn't have the unfixed shots on it.Chewtobacca said:

That's true, and it didn't really bother me to be honest, but I thought I'd signal the fact that I don't oppose those who don't like any changes and want the original to be on the blu-ray to stave off the inevitable argument.
In some ways it's these minor subtle and trivial revisions that you normally don't notice that are the worst in the long run because they have a much bigger chance to succeed in replacing the original work than the in your face revisionism that Lucas is the master on. I guess we will see something similar happen when The Abyss gets released on Blu.

oh my God. I could only go 4 minutes into this vid. This guy is absolutely nuts. Feel free to watch to whole thing, but I'm not going to waste my time.
When are we getting a 3D special edition of "Raise the Titanic"? ;)
"A Night to Remember" is still the definitive Titanic movie in my book.
If you want to see a really good non-historical ship sinking disaster movie, track down a copy of "The Last Voyage". A real luxury liner, (destined for the scrapyard) was destroyed for the film!
Where were you in '77?
Yes, I plan on watching "A Night to Remember on the evening of April 15, 2012.
I might watch Time Bandits.
I'm surprised TCM is only showing two Titanic related movies this weekend.
They actually ran the infamous WWII version a while back.

WWII version?
I just remembered that I once planned to write a story back in the 6th grade that would have had the Simpsons taking a voyage on the second Titanic, only for Godzilla to show up and start laying eggs and wrecking havok on the ship. Beyond a chapter or two and a few drawings I never got anywhere with it.
Heh, this actually reads like the kind of plotless plot that would make up a typical episode of The Simpsons today.
