Info: Topher Grace's Prequel edit

Author
Time

My name is Topher, so I've always had some connection to this guy even though I know very little about him. This is pretty exciting, it's kind of what I would do.

Sounds like an interesting cut!  I haven't heard of an all-in-one edit that goes that far.  And it sounds like it works, too, from the sound of the reviewer.

If he won't release it, that's a shame - though I totally get why.  Probably along the same lines of the reasons that mverta wont' release Legacy.

Might be interesting. Pity he cant release it under a secret net handle.

I imagine it won't be long until a fan-editor does a hoax cut.

Considering the review gives a framework for the edit, a hoax cut based on that could still be enjoyable.

Topher Grace is my new favorite fan editor.  Someone invite him to these boards.  Does he have a Twitter account?

I like the idea of starting the movie with the end of TPM.  Maybe someone will recreate the edit using the information provided.

 Spoiler free for the ST

Alot of the ideas are nothing new, but I do like the sound of it ending with the mask quite alot. Not Star Wars, but a good choice.

I was thinking how Jack lloyd isn't in this cut, if the space battle at naboo were used, could you hear hayden over the comm but not see him after he blows up the control ship?

I listened to the vimeo video at the end.  So sad to hear people defend the PT and the bad SE changes.  Especially when he can't do it without going out of his way to roll a few grenades at the preservationists.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Rewrite the Prequels!

Synopsis from article:

His idea was to edit the Star Wars prequels into one movie, as they would provide him a lot of footage to work with. He used footage from all three prequels, a couple cuts from the original trilogy, some music from The Clone Wars television series, and even a dialogue bit from Anthony Daniels’ (C-3PO) audio book recordings. He even created a new opening text crawl to set up his version of the story.

The result is an 85-minute movie titled Star Wars: Episode III.5: The Editor Strikes Back.

Topher Grace is commonly known as an actor from 'That 70's Show': http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0333410/

Other quotes from articles:

we were told that this would be the one and only time he would screen his cut. Of course, there are tremendous legal issues which would prevent him from screening the edit in public. He has no intention of uploading the footage online, and doing a screening at, say, Comic-Con, would require uncle George’s permission — which probably would never happen.

"It took about nine months to do. But I was learning and experimenting how to edit at the same time. Hopefully this will segue into a series of some sort."

Now, is there any difference between Grace's edit and a fan edit made by some not-famous Joe Schmoe Star Wars fanboy with an editing yen? I don't see why there would be

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/celebritology/post/topher-grace-has-created-an-85-minute-version-of-the-star-wars-prequels-with-no-jake-lloyd-and-very-little-jar-jar/2012/03/08/gIQAJYF0yR_blog.html

Actually, Grace reportedly wants to encourage this small group of Hollywood insiders to pursue similar re-edits of other films. It’s unclear why, unless he just wants his colleagues to think more carefully about which elements of a script are truly needed to tell a powerful cinematic story, which could be a valuable exercise.

It seems Topher 'Venom' Grace has come up with quite a radical take on the prequels then.  From nearly 7 hours worth of footage down to 85 minutes is certainly a bold cut of the material, and it's too bad we're unlikely to see exactly what he came up with for his 'private screening'.

Anyway, in addition to the Slashfilm link in the 1st post, here's a couple of others with some additional snippets of the cuts he came up with -

Collider.com - http://collider.com/topher-grace-star-wars-prequels/150596/

Firstshowing.net - http://www.firstshowing.net/2012/video-blog-topher-graces-85-minute-cut-of-the-star-wars-prequels/

...although I'm not sure why he'd want to fiddle about with the already great 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind' next though, considering the likes of 'Spider-man 3' is crying out for attention! ;)

Am I the only person who thinks it's a bit disrespectful to "remix" someone else's films? Even if they are crappy? They were Lucas' films and by doing this it's like Grace is saying "Hey, I can do it better than you!" Even if he can, it's not really his place to do so. Would we all be so supportive if he remixed a classic film like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Citizen Kane, or the aforementioned Godfather?

Lucas has done this countless times already to his films. I know they are his creation (mostly), but fiddling with them seems to be his ongoing hobby.
Exactly, they're his films.

*facepalm*

Anyway the edit in the article sounds interesting... "Accidental" leak would be superb.

The Toph (as his pals call him) makes a good point about the educational aspect of making a fan edit.

You learn TONS about basic filmmaking doing this. Story, pacing, editing, sound...  and without the cost of producing a epic motion picture.

I learned more from my crappy re-edit of the TV show "Kindred The embraced" than I did from my film classes in college.

I wonder if these Kool-Aid-drinking asshats ever practice what they preach when it comes down to subjects other than Star Wars.
