How much did the conversion cost again?

ANH-3D has exceeded the budget of the original film a year ago and they are not even supposed to be working on it in earnest. Titanic is costing $18 million, some movies cost $30 million like Transformers 3, but a typical cost for a film where the 3D is done with care is about $15 million or so. I would estimate TPM cost this much but they haven't released any numbers as far as I can tell; it might be more. I doubt it's much lower, based on the fact that ANH3D already cost over $11 million in 2011 and they had only done parts of the film. Over by how much, who knows--maybe just by a bit, or maybe by another $8 million.

The Phantom Menace has matched expectations and brought in a very healthy $23 million dollars at the North American box office, taking fourth spot for the weekend.

That's bad, lol.

Pretty sure the OT will pull in a good deal more when it's released starting in... 2015?

On a side note, has anyone found the 2D version playing near them?

I've only found one screen showing it near me, and it's one of those captioned presentations for the hearing impaired.

I caught it in 2D. Nobody will ever convince me that 2D isn't the way to go to see this movie. Plus, it sounds like a lot of 3D showings have all the same brightness issues that are typical of a lot of poorly configured 3D presentations (Roger Ebert wrote a legendary rant about this phenomenon a while back that's worth checking out). If you can find a 2D screening of the movie, that would be my recommendation.

All I really want is each film as it was originally seen and heard in theaters; no fixes, corrections, "improvements" or modifications necessary.

If it wasn't at a multiplex that was ruined when they added 8 crackerboxes to the original 8 auditoriums that have better screens and acoustics, I would. ;)

I don't always watch Star Wars Episode 1, but when I do- I prefer The Ridiculous Menace.

Almost as bad as the transfer were the fans in attendance...the guy who was shouting, clapping, and cheering over enthusiastically at everything from Jar Jar, to "yippee!", to "are you and angel?" (that kids a pimp he said) and basically every shot Darth Maul was in.  Seriously, the guy started shouting "fuck yeah" and "fuck him up" during the final duel while there were CHILDREN present.

Sorry DB, I just got m'self a little excited is all!

man, i shoulda became a box office financial analyst.  so fascinating!

valentines day is a bigger movie day than I thought.  plenty of movies that made maybe 100 to 200% more from monday to tuesday.

TPM3D, however, fell to 6th place and had by far the lowest increase: 21%

[guffaws] guess maybe next time AOTC3D will have a bigger tuesday-wednesday increase for valentines day cuz its more romantic.

zombie's right,  this is looking more and more like a green hornet one and done (even thats a stretch).  Presidents day may be its last opportunity for a spike.

click here if lack of OOT got you down

The Star Wars juggernaut no longer has the capacity to recognize failure, even retroactively.  My personal prediction is that this 3D rehash will be the world's slowest and most predictable train wreck for the next several years, and afterwards, the usual suspects will deem it to be a success by measuring against whatever goalposts they manage to have constructed by then.

I totally agree. Even if the numbers are disappointing to George, I'm sure the thought is "Well, the next one will do better. People loved seeing Yoda jumping around like a frog with a glowstick!"

Actually, watching it in a CC presentation could be good for laughs. Some of the lines are much worse when printed right before your eyes.

It's saying 7th place for me.

Wow.  This totally blows away the "prequels are beloved by the general public and only hated by a few whiny nerds" theory out of the water.

I also can't wait to see how George, Katie, and Rick spin this.  I have some guesses on what they'll say, but hesitate to post them for fear that they'll use them.  That's right George, if you want my spin doctoring, you'll have to pay me handsomely.

I was taking my kids to see The Muppets on Saturday and the guy at the Box Office told me that the projector for that showing had broken down and the hoped to have it fixed in time......the foyer was soon full of people waiting to find out if the film was going ahead or if refunds would have to be given,....the film was due to start at 3:30 and we were told the projector was fixed about 25past 3.

It was a stampede to get to the screening room, & it was a full house....

.....on the way I passed two screening rooms for TPM...one was labeled 3D,...not sure about the other one.....can't imagine they would have a full house

So, you'd actually recommend that people see this... thing?

If they're already fans of the movie, yeah. If this rerelease is proving nothing else, it's that TPM isn't changing too many peoples minds the second time around.

Ok, yeah, I agree. If you're gonna watch something that damages your brain, the least you could do is watch it in 2D as to not damage your eyes as well.

Hey, I see that the thread title has changed a few times. Any chance it could be changed to say 3D TPM instead of 3D STAR WARS? It's nitpicky for sure, but that definitely isn't the wonderful film called Star Wars that they are showin' in the theaters.

That's really it in a nutshell.  In this day and age, no one's team ever loses.  It's no different than the President speaking to a room full of Democrats and  Newt speaking to a room full of Republicans.  Both groups will claim victory because both groups hear only what they want to hear.

I haven't read any reviews for this, but I suspect the arguments are something along the lines of;

Non-fans - "Man, seventh place?  That  shows how bad it is."

Fans - "Man, 25 million in a week?  That shows how good it is."

In the end, this will do exactly what Lucas wants.  It will generate tons of return on investment - and it will once again get the prequels in the news, keeping them relevant.

A tip of the cap, George.  You're a fucking genius.

I didn't realize that "10 minutes in photoshop" poster, with Maul front and center was the main official poster until I saw one in a bus stop display today.
