Collaborative Fanediting: An ROTJ Proposition (BACK ON TRACK WITH EMANSWFAN AT THE HELM--SEE POST 1488 OR OP FOR A LINK!) — Page 39

Ooh, that reminds me, Bingo...if you can think of any lines from the radio adaptation that would be useful, I think it'd be swell (I love that word!).  I know only Anthony Daniels played in ROTJ, but perhaps Mark Hamill and Billy Dee Williams had some line not used in the films that could be put in a different context and made useful in our edit.  If you can't tell, I've been seeking out alternate video and audio that might be useful.

Thanks for the response, Ron.  I know you're learning the tricks.  Are you able to do color correction yet?  You can download a fairly good quality video of Star Tours using keep-vid.com.

By the way, here are the mp3s for the Interactive Board Game.  I suspect any Vader lines would need to be filtered to sound more like the mechanical movie Vader.  It sounds too much like good ol' JEJ often, but still I think there is potential there.  The VOB files had some problems, so I have been unable to simply extract the audio from them.  I had to use Freecorder instead, which did the trick but took a long time.  I was trying to turn the 60 minute movie into approximately 15 minute mp3s, but it split a couple of them again, so there are two 2 minute mp3s.  Also be aware that much of the movie/game is simply watching the DSII move against a starry background with Williams music in the background.  I didn't take the time to simply record the lines, so you'll have to search for and extract whatever you want.

Long time lurker, first time poster here. Just popping in to point out that Billy Dee not only starred in the ESB radio adaptation, but in the Dark Empire Trilogy radio series and the game Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast too. You should be able to find more unique Lando lines somewhere in those productions.

Good point.  I hope somebody takes a look.  If you can think of any useful lines, please let us know.  And we're glad to have you contribute :)

I've a copy of Dark Empire, will give it a flick through later for Billy Dee.
More recent games like the Force Unleashed II could be used for some shots, there's a space battle in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huI36JG1R3s (around the 8 minute mark) that might be useful for the odd short shot of Star Destroyers and the like if colour graded to match the rest of the footage and so on.

Thanks.  That'd be appreciated.  Who knows if it will be productive, but it's nice to know what resources we have at our disposal.  Interesting footage, BTW.  Looks fun, and maybe a few seconds could be grabbed from there.

So I didn't even realize what we had in our very own OT.com:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Tours-preservation-dvd/topic/9476/page/1/

From there I found this link:

This looks promising, but my Internet is going so slow at the present that I can't watch this streaming.  I'll give it a look later and see if it has a decent quality version of the movie.  Here's hoping.

Been fiddling with the rough "Boba beheaded" scene; I've tightened up the final hop onto Luke's side of the transport and put in a better shot of Boba's head flying off.

No idea how to put it on here, though; maybe you folks could suggest one? :-)

Simply upload it to a file sharing site like Rapidshare or Mediafire, then provide us with a link.  I look forward to seeing what you've done.

Well, with the recent crackdowns on file sharing sites, I'm sort of worried how long it would stay up for. :-S

All they've punished so far is MegaUpload.  Hopefully it doesn't get worse.  In any case, if it's small enough you can upload it to a lesser known file sharing site, like 4shared (which I'm using).  Or you can make a torrent and provide it to us.

Would be great to see what you have done... I only started using after effects on a free trial so I don't have much time left to put my ideas to screen this was about 2 weeks ago so I am a complete beginner and apologies for the quality of what I have done but I needed a way to atleast show my ideas in the hope somone who knows how to use the software could improve upon it...

My strategy just might work? perhaps I'll need to make another account too because I am going to run out of time soon....And hopefully I will run out of ideas also :)

Try mediafire I have no problem with it at all it's easy to use and look forward to seeing the clip soon....

@DarthEnder I was reading the thread about the star tours restoration and some dude put it on DVD already.... I wonder if that is the version that is on youtube with improved colour but widescreen transfer... Although grainy.... I think the Jap version may shape up better with colour correction.

@Bingowings It looks like that clip might be all CGI....looking at it the stills on the youtube look alright but there is a certain dirtyness lacking by the looks of it.... Like star tours 2 it's too clean but the deathstar II zoom shot is ok the star destroyers look weird though I wonder if we could make that look grainier / dirtier and soften it might improve it in a way.

It a terrible case of footage either being too digital CGI or poor source quality and being able to find that happy medium in between to get it all to match up

Yes, but sites like Fileserve, filesonic and others have been scared away.

I've downloaded several different versions from different sources, but thus far I can't find something that would be an easy restoration (near-proper colors, stable frame), not even on the well thought out DVDs.  However, I may have found someone willing to sell me a movie for around $25 (for a 4 1/2 minute movie...).  I've asked if it is a good quality version, and hopefully I'll get feedback soon.  This really needs to be put on MySpleen or something, and if I do end up getting it, I will provide it for all.  I think it could be a good resource for several edits, not just this one.

I'd be careful because the person will no doubt say it's good quality... So how will you be able to tell until after you have paid for it?

I know, I am somewhat concerned.  He described it to me as a workprint from a Walt Disney Imagineer.  $25 is not exactly cheap, but it's not the end of the worl either if it ends up not being worth it.  Hopefully it's a good purchase.

Well, I just bought it, so hopefully it was worth the money.  I will be sure to upload it when I get it, assuming it's something usable.

Has anyone found the Interactive Board Game audio valuable or useful?  Ronster, I hope you found your quote.

So I am having some difficulty with extracting the audio from the VOB files of the Interactive Board Game, but I seem to have no problem converting portions to an AVI.  I downloaded some free editing software and may try my hand at fixing this up as much as possible, but for now I've uploaded a very short clip of Vader walking down the hall in the Death Star.  I figure it can ultimately be inserted just before Vader gets on the turboshaft to go to his meditation chamber, thus freeing up the already present walk down the hall to be used in the Vader choking Jerjerrod scene; it needs a Vader approach to work, and the other hall matches.

It's nothing much, but it can be cropped to fit the widescreen format with no problem, and hopefully can be enhanced.  Believe me, it's short.

So, Angel, aalenfae, Harmy or someone else who loves to enhance videos, can this be improved to the point where it could be used in our edit?  It is short after all, so even if its quality is lower than the rest, can it be improved enough to not feel too out of place?

It's way too bad to be usable after cropping, even in SD. But here's a quick crude mockup of how it could be made semi usable:

Author

Thanks, Harmy.  Nice to know it might have some use with a little work.  I appreciate the answer :)

Author

I should have added that I'm sure I can make a higher quality AVI to work with also.  I just wanted folks to see what I was talking about.  I'll probably end up converting the whole movie and rar-ing it for everyone.

Author
Time

Wouldn't it be better to just upload the VOB files? You need to remove pulldown and deinterlace the video before converting.

Wasnt Mr Jaitea that had connections with people that are in garrisons and wear realistic prop suits?

Now before judging the clip from its humorous nature the starting shots is an example with some effort some shots can look amazingly good in green screen and few actors.

Imagine it with more care and attention to detail and compositing what could have been :)

The environment is pretty horribly CG in those first shots in that video, like a computer game (which is totally fine for a humorous video like that but it sure looks super cheap.) But I agree that you could probably achieve better results with shooting actors in costumes, even with green screen, if you put them in front of a realistic looking background (a nice miniature comes to mind) than upscaling analogue based video. The question is if you actually want to go all revisited on this edit's ass ;-)
