"Federal prosecutors in Virginia have shut down one of the world's largest file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws.

The indictment accuses the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed Thursday, one day after websites shut down in protest of two congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.

Megaupload.com has claimed it is diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.

The indictment says at one point, Megaupload was the 13th most popular website in the world."

I'm pretty confident SOPA won't pass, but it has unfortunately brought piracy and filesharing back to the top of the feds' agenda and we will suffer either way. I tended to prefer megaupload to torrents/RapidShare.

I wonder how long it will take for the legitimate users to counter sue for loss of earnings.

Lots of software for example was distributed via that route.

This is a very good point.

I think if these bills (which were probably hand written by the MPAA or RIAA) pass it will just force "pirate sites" to go to foreign countries for hosting. Demonoid has moved several times. Sure the government will censor those sites but there are plenty of ways around that (just ask the folks in China).

Bottom line this bill (if it becomes a law) will fail to make a dent in piracy. And how long before they begin to censor sites which offends some other special interest group or anti-American sites??

It's going to ruin a lot of things like youtube, facebook, deviantart, newsgroups, etc.

No, it isn't. Here's a pic of what it is:

It isn't "fully operational" yet, but it's still good news.

In all honesty, I don't know of any way to guarantee that the page is legitimate. I was merely spreading the word which had gotten me excited deeply. Now that I'm learning about these "bird calls", I hereby apologize in the event that it's a fake, though nobody knows for sure. I'll edit my prior post, with the link, to alert all people of this possibility....

The way I heard it, there's something out there claiming to be a new Megaupload but is in fact a Trojan IP tracker or some other kind of harmful scam perpetuated by the Mystical Ass Wizards who shut the site down in the first place.

Use extreme caution.

I find that discussion totally unmoderated.

The interwebs is going dark...

It's certainly a dark day for the internet and our entertainment.

I'll just watch even fewer movies and less TV. And the studios won't make a dime off me.
