Lucas' Red Tails — Page 4

I'm actually looking forward to Mark Hamill's new film, more than this one* (*meaning, I'm actually not looking forward to this one at all). ;-)

I hope at least Hamill's film gets a theatrical release and doesn't go straight-to-
video. :-/

Look who is in town today:

http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/entertainment&id=8491931

They're at a private screening tonight at the only theater I've been to in probably 14 years or so.   It's a very nice theater.  I see everything there. If they post the broadcast from tonight on their site, I'll link to it.  Sounds like they're going to let George revise tell the story behind making the film.

Lucas is going to be on The Daily Show next week, presumably to plug the movie.

The actress from Red Tails (forget her name- she's on NCIS:LA) was on Craig Ferguson's show last nite. They didn't say one word about the film (which isn't unusual on Craig's show- his whole schtick is going off on tangents).

hmm. I'll see that.

At the very least, it should be another interesting character role for Hamill. The hair-do is very interesting. :-P

I'll skip the initial theatrical release and wait for the 3D rerelease in which the airmen are replaced by CGI robots.

Wow Red-Tails is finally coming to the big screen?  If what I read in previous posts is right then, good job lucas, it only took you 23 years!  So with george's involvement does that mean Red-Tails will have a huge action figure and vehicle toy line?  Will I be able to buy Red-Tails towels, underwear, toothbrushes, bed sheets, cereal and toasters as well?

Seriously though, I'd like to read or watch the reaction from the real Tuskegee airmen once they have seen the film.  Not sure how many are still alive.

except for coffee table books and other stuff, won't be merchandising.  whats more likely - and worse - is we'll get more 'interviews' with lucas going out of his way to differentiate himself by saying 'see - look, this movie is coming striaght from the heart, its not about the money'  and more pathetic straw-man nonsense about how 'hollywood would never do this, hollywood would try to exploit this for profit'.

but if this thing cost $58 million, maybe there will be merchandise - or TPM 3D will make up any shortfalls.

as far as the real Tuskegee airmen - im sure they will like it since the movie appears to be nothing more than a tribute to all their accomplishments.   But i'll laugh if they complain that the movie has a lot of action but not much of a story - or if it turns out all the characters and events are fictionalized.

BTW Hoth, I noticed you did not call him 'Luca$' (I still remember when the TFN moderators threaten to shut down the basher sanctuary unless we stopped calling him that.) - are you becoming a kinder, gentler hoth-nudist for 2012?  ;P

LOL!  Ooops!  Forgot the $!  Yep to me he's still Luca$!  I also remember the douchecookie-mods at TFN.  Havent been there in years and not planning anytime soon.  So Luca$ is going on "the daily show" eh?  I would love for jon stewart to ask him 'how many special editions does he plan for this one!"

I just saw a video of his Daily Show segment

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/popcandy/post/2012/01/video-george-lucas-goes-on-the-daily-show/1

He complained some about how the studios were against him, marketing problems, etc.  Almost sounds like he is already getting defensive in case the movie isn't a success.

The short video clip at the beginning seemed slightly less "video gamey" than the trailer sequences at least, but overall I'm still not optimistic.  And I'm currently getting my WWII fix playing Company of Heroes, so unless somehow this gets great review I'll probably wait for it to come to video.

There is one unfavorable review on rottentomatoes from somebody who says he went to an advance screening, for what it's worth.

lol, not to say i called it... but there you go.   the whole anti-establishment schtick is a joke.  lucas and all his apologists like to regurgitate the nonsense about how 'studio suits didn't believe in star wars cuz they were a bunch of old fogies'.   It made for a really cute fairy tale back in the day but now it has zero credibility.   thing is, what we saw in 1977 was NOT what lucas described to Fox executives (not to mention he had none of john williams music to set the scene nor ralph mcquarrie and joe johnstons designs).  What likely happened was they saw a man who cannot write, cannot direct, cannot work with actors and has lots of bad ideas that derail a movie no matter what good ideaqs there are.

and I believe that for every story regarding studios that turn lucas down.  think about it - if you were a studio producer and you were well aware of lucas' lack of skills and work ethic, would you trust him?!

GL doing that maverick schtick is just hilarious at this point but I really hope this movie is good and it's nice that he tried to make something different. (I love that he's a pioneer in all black filmmaking now. I guess we're ignoring Miracle at St. Anna. And Mario Van Peebles. And the entire fucking '70s). Did we ever find out the nature of all the re-cuts and re-shooting?

Yeah, that Episode Seven remark stung a bit after his denials in recent years about the third trilogy. ;)

We don't want Episode 7, we want Episodes 4-6 in their original unaltered form restored and on Blu-Ray!!!

Actually, some of McQuarrie's ealry concept paintings (such as the one below) were what helped Lucas finally convince Fox execs to take the gamble.

Yes it eventually did.  I should have clarified that before he had the designs, it was going nowhere - then once the designs were created (like the one above and the 3p0 desert design), things started moving forward

Nah. Post-AMERICAN GRAFFITI, the most profitable movie ever at that time, full of great performances and expertly made for about 12 bucks, no one would have thought that, no matter how kooky Star Wars sounded.

“Once this is finished, he’s done everything he’s ever wanted to do,” says Rick McCallum, who has been producing Lucas’s films for more than 20 years. “He will have completed his task as a man and a filmmaker.”

EDIT: Whoa!

“On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie,” Lucas says, referring to fans who, like the dreaded studios, have done their own forcible re-edits. “I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.’ ”

Did Lucas just call us out?!

He also said he's fine with us as long as we let him make his Special Editions. Crap.

Wait, wait.  I see a lawyer-sized hole.  He says we could release the 1977 version as long as we don't put his name on it (maybe he'd also like to be scrubbed from the credits, unsure about that part).

I think Star Wars fans are just fine with those terms, sir (I'm sure the credits scrubbing will cause some whining but we can manage it).  Alert Mike Verta!  Get Lucas to make this statement legally binding and we're all set!

Maybe we could balance the concession of taking his name off the film with being able to charge money for it, since he wants nothing to do with it...
