Info: 3D Movies Unavailable on Official DVD in 3D... (Request List in 1st Post)

Hello all,

I decided to make a thread dedicated to 3D movies that are currently only available in 2D or not available in any state at all. This thread is part preservation/part request thread. If there is an unavailable 3D movie, you can request it here, and hopefully someone will help out by uploading what you desire.

Many 3D movies were released on VHD officially in Japan, but got transferred to DVD unofficially by people at sometime or another. It would be quite nice if someone could share one of these transfers. A few were also released on VHS, such as Creature From the Black Lagoon.

In any case, feel free to request whatever 3D movie needs preservation and lacks an official DVD release. When you request something, I’ll add it to the “REQUEST LIST” below, so anyone interested in helping can just check the first post rather than reading the whole thread. I’ll add a “PRESERVED LIST” once the 3D preservations start coming along.

REQUEST LIST

  • Dial M For Murder
  • Jaws 3D
  • Creature From the Black Lagoon
  • Starchaser: The Legend of Orin
  • The Treasure of the Four Crowns
  • Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared Syn

So, if you’re interested in requests, start making them. I’ll monitor this thread daily so the “REQUEST LIST” will be updated.

Don't you mean "3D movies that are currently only available in 2D"?

Interesting idea. But won't this require someone with a VHD player from Japan and the 3D titles to go with it?

I'd like to see "Comin' at ya!" and "Starchaser the Legend of Orin" in 3D myself.

SilverWook, that's exactly what I meant. I made that post late at night. I'll revise it right now. Thank you.

Well, my logic was that some of them have already been transferred to DVD or to one's computer. I know that I've seen Creature in the Black Lagoon in 3D in a number of conventions on DVD. (BTW, I may have located a low quality AVI source for this online).

I'd like to see "Comin' at ya!" and "Starchaser the Legend of Orin" in 3D myself.

Added to the list.

I actually have the JAWS 3-D VHD from Japan, if anyone wants to preserve that, I could help out.

I'd love to see Jaws 3-D in... well, 3D!

I saw in in 2D at the local cinema when it was released, but it always felt like there was something missing.

You can get bootleg anaglyph 3D DVD versions off eBay, but I suppose the ideal preservation would be in a side-by-side format for playback on a 3D TV with Stereoscopic Player? I don't actually have a 3D TV and this sort of thing is a bit new to me.

I had a headache by the time the film was over, but the severed fish head floating out of the screen was cool. I still recall people in the front rows reaching out to try and touch it. ;)

I need to dig out my copy of Shrek 3D, (the theme park one) and see if the red and blue glasses work better on current flat screens. It was usually hit or miss with the 3D broadcasts of the '80's, and less than perfect colors on old analog tube tv sets.

That would be quite an ideal preservation. I wonder if conversion between the two formats of anaglyph and side by side is possible with some software.

In any case, I have indeed found AVI anaglyph versions of Jaws 3D, Coming At Ya', Starchaser, and Creature From the Black Lagoon. They're all torrents, so they're currently coming along rather slowly. I'll re-up them quickly to MultiUpload (which should be easy as they are small uploads). I have already completed the download of Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Still, I'm disappointed I can't find a 3D version of Dial M For Murder :-(

Back in July TheDigitalBits held a panel at Comic-Con and it was revealed that WHV was working on House of Wax and Dial M for murder for Blu-ray 3D release sometime in 2012.

I looked at the links you guys posted. While Jaws 3D is indeed available on Sensio 3D, the anaglyph version isn't out on DVD, AFAIK. Wouldn't the Anaglyph still be worth anything to those without the rather expensive Sensio Systems? If so, can I still upload an anaglyph AVI, or would that violate site rules?

On a side note, Comin' At Ya is indeed available in Anaglyph 3D officially. So, it doesn't fit the qualification of "Unavailable on Official DVD in 3D." I've removed it from the list up top. You can get it right here:

http://www.amazon.com/Comin-At-Ya-Tony-Anthony/dp/6305564345/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1321937630&sr=1-1

While the article you linked to Moth3r mentions a release of Creature From the Black Lagoon in 3D, I can't find any information that they actually went through with a release... so I assume that makes it safe for preservation.

As it is, I'll upload Creature and Starchaser in Anaglyph 3D to anyone who wants them. I will post when they are ready, please don't PM me before that. In light of the genuine release, I'm not sure about uploading the anaglyph version of Jaws 3D.

Didn't know it was available, thanks for finding that!

Now how about the 3D Indiana Jones knockoff "Treasure of the Four Crowns"? ;)

You don't need a $895 Sensio processor to watch this if you have a PC, the private licence version of Stereoscopic Player is just €39. But I don't see a problem if you want to upload an anaglyph version.

I can't find anything either. Perhaps Jaws 3-D flopped so they didn't release any further titles.

Exploring the sensio.tv website with the Wayback Machine, I can see that Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came from Outer Space and Revenge of the Creature were listed on the Coming Soon page back in March 2009. The page then disappeared.

Looking at the the Now Available page from October 2010, the following major studio releases are listed as being released in the format:
Taza, Son of Cochise
Jaws 3-D
Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over
Santa vs. the Snowman
The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D

There were also a number of IMAX films, a couple of independents, and 22 adult films (!) available.

How about Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn? The DVD is not only not in 3D, but it's also pan-and-scan. Universal cheaped out and recycled a P&S video master that was done for pay cable some time in the 90s, rather than do a new transfer in widescreen. (To add insult to injury, it's one of those P&S transfers that has the credits in letterbox format...)

There is a field-sequential bootleg DVD originating from the VHD, but the picture is pretty fuzzy; I think it was sourced from a VHS *at least* a generation removed from the original VHD...a direct rip of the VHD would be great.

I assume this is what happened. On a side note, I just noticed someone is making a (2D) fan edit of Jaws 3 on fanedit.org, for those interested.

On the topic of VHDs, does anyone here happen to actually have a VHD player or a way to rip them?

CG has a ton of 3D movies in anaglyph and/or field-sequential format, btw.

"CG" - would that be Cinemageddon?

I dug out some red/cyan glasses. For some reason, the 3D effect doesn't work for me on that clip, however there are several other clips that did look pretty good once I'd played with YouTube's 3D settings (swapped the left/right, selected Optimized (Dubois) Color mode).

You know, although I thought the movie was bad at the time, I've just watched a trailer for Shark Night 3D; Jaws 3 suddenly seems a much better movie than I remember.

Better than "Jaws: The Revenge" too. At least Michael Caine was able to buy a house or something by being in it. ;)

Jaws may have actually spawned more knockoffs than Star Wars. I guess it's safe to say there won't be anymore sequels before 2015?

I'm in the process of getting one, but it costs me abut $400!

Congrats on actually getting a player. I've been curious about VHD since the old days, when it was often cryptically mentioned in magazine articles about Laserdisc and CED.

Hard to find them on Ebay, as more often than not a search brings back VHS listings misspelled. ;)

How about Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone.  with Molly Ringwald.
