I changed the thread title for you guys, so go ahead and take over this thread, it is all yours now.

Ah sorry for taking the thread like that. Does this mean your 1997 Blu-Ray project is no longer on?

I am also sorry. Maybe I should have posted my questions about past and recent DV Broadcasts of 1997 SE in a new thread.

I just finished downloading the whole 1997 gkar trilogy.  I have been looking for these forever.

I also downloaded the flunk version of A New Hope.

Does anyone know how the TB versions stack up against these?

Those are the only known versions of the 1997 editions circulating the internet correct?

Thanks to all who uploaded :-)

So, to clarify about the Digital Broadcasts. There are a few 1997SE Broadcast DVDs:

  1. Flunk- ANH- (available on myspleen, soon to be available on multiupload)
  2. Reivax- ANH- (available on myspleen and multiupload)
  3. G'kar- ANH, ESB, and ROTJ (trilogy on myspleen, ESB and ROTJ on multiupload)
  4. TB- ANH, ESB, and ROTJ (?)

Is anything missing from that list? In my experience, the Flunk slightly edges out the Reivax in terms of less smearing but also is subject to some garbage frames... The G'kar is substantially more compressed and lower quality than the others. I'm not sure if there's a Flunk for ESB and ROTJ...

As you can see, the only ones that I'm not completely sure about are the TB releases. Can anyone share these ones on myspleen? I'd be happy to repost to multiupload. They're probably superior to the G'Kar.

Well there's always the old Five-Star chinese LD transfers, but I'm confident these blow those old sets out of the water. Wish I knew they were coming before plunking down $40 or so to get'm on ebay about 10 years ago.

dark_jedi has copies of the TB release. He posted some comparison pics in this thread a year ago (see post #182). Maybe he can upload this set to the newsgroup or multiupload.

All right guys the Flunk is now available on Multiupload. PM me for links. I will be uploading Lee Thorogood's 1997 SE set next for those who cannot handle smearing. Then I will upload the G'KAR ANH.

Once again, if anyone can upload the TB set to myspleen, I'd gladly repost it to Multiupload. The ESB TB is the one that most intrigues me, as the G'KAR of it is heavily compressed, much more so than ROTJ.

If this is now the 97SE version thread then be sure and check this old project thread for all kinds of info:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Max-Rebos-97-SE-superset-preservation/topic/9031/

I'm psyched to finally see the G'kar and Flunk releases.

It is funny how information on this board travels in circles. A lot of the stuff we are discussing now regarding the SE 1997 digital broadcasts has been posted in various threads from 2004 to 2010.

Max_Rebos superset preservation seemed promising and there is a lot of great info in this thread.

I sent him a PM about this project and asked if he can upload the TB release for us.

Good idea. That project did have a lot of promise.

Dammit now I have to login!

I recently returned to OT.com to read about the Blu-ray, but the renewed talk about '97 SE preservation is quite interesting, I even went as far as reviewing my project files to see how much is left to be done... and had a bit of a mental breakthrough regarding colour correction.

Miracle of miracles......

My (May 2005 original newsgroup download burned to those hideous Bulkpaq DVD's I used to send out!!!!!!) copy of the TB release is 100% OK and works a treat. All files now fully backed up on my HDD.

If all other requests to upload the TB release somewhere fails, I will gladly send my original discs out to someone if they can promise an upload to get this great DVD set back in circulation.

You still have those? It is nice to see you back around Max_Rebo. Are you considering finishing the set or just reminiscing on old projects?

Russs, I'd be absolutely willing to upload the TB set to MultiUpload, where it is available to all, if you sent them to me. I uploaded the G'Kar and Flunk and no one seems to be having trouble getting those downloaded. Are the TBs DVD-9s or DVD-5s? It really doesn't matter; I'm just curious. :-D

In any case, I'm very sorry but I'm not able to pay B&P right now. Can we do a PiF-type deal where I pass by uploading? If this is all right, PM me and I'll send you my address. Apologies... :-(

It's not something I ever really gave up on, it's just that real life got in the way. One of the best things about using Avisynth for editing is that the project files are tiny so there's no point in deleting them!

I've been thinking about a good method of colour matching the sources and recently realised there might be an easy way to do it in Avisynth (much easier than previous attempts to write a new C++ filter, or using the python program I tried to write), matching the colours of the various sources is most important for ANH where the creator boosted the contrast and saturation.

However there is way more to do on ROTJ than I ever thought, the filtering of the GKAR version (see this post) affects so many more frames than I thought, including almost every shot of C-3P0 and Vader where it filters out little bits of reflection, and also a lot of space shots where it removes parts of fast moving ships.

Just in the middle of moving house, but I may have another look at this once I've moved.

I hope you'll excuse the bump, but did anything ever happen towards uploading tb?  I was rather interested in checking that out.

I just got the DVDs, so I will be uploading this weekend to MultiUpload. I'll also be uploading Lee Thorogood's set right afterwards. Apologies for the delays.

Hello everyone! Good news, I was able to upload the entire Star Wars TB DVD Set to MultiUpload, all four DVD-5s. I have sent some PMs out already, but, if you want them, feel absolutely free to PM me for the links now. If any of the archives don't unpack properly, please tell me so I can resolve the situation.

Of course, much thanks to russs15 for sending me these DVDs. It's really much appreciated, and I couldn't have uploaded with out them.

After watching all of the 1997 Digital Broadcasts, I really think that this is how it is for each movie from best to worst.

A New Hope

  1. Flunk- It does have some errors in the digital tape, but it is the only dual-layer one, and overall has the best picture quality. Also, it has English subtitles for alien dialogue and an English Crawl.
  2. Reivax- This has pretty good picture throughout. It does have a French crawl but the picture looks nice on the whole, minus the smearing of course.
  3. TB- The TB look all right. I would say it's a bit softer than the Reivax, but it does have an English crawl so some people may like this better.
  4. G'KAR- Sorry, but to me the G'KAR looks awful. It seems overfiltered and way too compressed. The German 5.1 and the fake (!) English 5.1 take up way too much space on a DVD-5 that is not even full capacity. This is the only digital broadcast not available on MultiUpload.

Empire Strikes Back

  1. TB- The TB of this looks pretty nice. The picture is relatively sharp throughout but it shows no signs of overfiltering. Also, the crawl is in English! The video is much less compressed.
  2. G'KAR- Again, this suffers from heavy compression and unnecessary audio tracks. The crawl is also in German. All in all, the menus are the best part of this release. You can even see some pixelization in a few scenes.

Return of the Jedi

  1. TB- This one was honestly a little harder. The picture is pretty soft throughout and it wasn't really pleasing to the eye. The English crawl is nice though.
  2. G'KAR- This is the best G'KAR release as it is the least compressed. Still, it still has some compression pixelization and is far too overfiltered. In an attempt to remedy the softness of picture, there has been a lot of sharpening placed upon this. I suppose some people might prefer this to softness though.

So, those are my opinions on all the releases. Does anyone agree with them?

By the way, I will be uploading Lee Thorogood's set as soon as I have time. I know I have greatly delayed on this, but I need to take my computer somewhere and can't leave it on automatic upload for the time being.

Flunk doesn't have any alien subs. I know that most people like Flunk best due to its sharper image but it is affected by chroma subsampling and other problems, IMO Reivax beats it.

I did my own version way back with a combination of Flunk and Reivax with the latter as a base, similar to what mallwalker once uploaded to the newsgroup, but instead converted to NTSC with alien subs and fixed aspect ratio. I can upload it someday if there is interest. If the version itself and its smearing isn't enough I think all these are basically unwatchable without re-authoring with their stretched image and PAL-speedup.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

You're right about the subtitles... I don't know why I thought it did. My bad. About Reivax beating it, that could be true. They were indeed close in my opinion, but, to my eyes, at least, it looked better.

Oh wow! Can you please upload that if you have the time? Sorry for appearing greedy but the 1997 was the first version I grew up with and a nice NTSC hybrid version would be utterly amazing. If you upload it to torrents, I'd be willing to repost it to MultiUpload.

I shouldn't have mentioned it, I'll call you Greedo from now on. ;) Seriously though, I can do that when I find the time and when my computer allow it.

russs15 and The Aluminium Falcon, thank you very much! It is wonderful that all existed "releases" of DVB recordings of 97 SE are now avaliable!

Maybe this is not right thread to ask O:-) but does anyone know if the mallwalker's version has the aspect ratio corrected or not? And is it avaliabe somewhere else than on newsgroups?

If the version itself and its smearing isn't enough I think all these are basically unwatchable without re-authoring with their stretched image and PAL-speedup.

As I live in Europe, the PAL-speedup is OK for me :-), but I agree that the stretched image is really annoying. Fortunately, Media Player Classic has a function that allows you to modify - zoom/stretch the image during playing so you can easily stretch the x axis of picture by pressing "8".

BTW does anybody know why the image off all these DVB recordings is stretched? I can't imagine how this could have happened just by recording from DVB-S reciever to DigiBetaCam tape and then trasnferring to PC. Or was it already broadcasted with this bad aspect ratio?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but where are these available? I'm looking for the TB version of ANH specifically.
