Moth3r: Yeah, that was me who posted it. So I guess I replied to my own post 3 years later. hehe 8O)

Thanks for the update, good luck.

As the ideas of preservation expand, I wonder which version will drift into the 'accepted' preservation title.  (there probably won't be one, but for the argument play along)  There will be projects like this one where it's one man and a behind the scenes team of experts.  Then there are projects which work more openly, but still tend to be the drive of one individual.  The progress of the first will probably surpass the second for sometime, but the open projects can build upon the others.  And that's the third project type, the built upon the previously rebuilt.  I think it's great to have them all going as they each can spark an idea or concept in the other.  Good to have the Legacy resurging as from the clues shown, the accomplishments MVerta is going through will be mentioned in the blog will help the outside attempts at the same process.  But when the public domaining of Star Wars happens, what will the general public latch onto?  If they do at all of course.

Any chance you can be swayed to put aside Star Wars and upgrade the real master piece 'Dunyayi Kurtaran Adam'?

Mike, I respect your desires - you've clearly stated in the past you have no intentions of distributing your completed project. But I remain confused as to why you won't distribute this.

Also, it can be very frustrating to see your announcements and progress, knowing that it won't ever be seen by those who would appreciate and treasure it. I hope you will reconsider your stance.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Agreed, I don't understand this either. Looks cool but if it's only for you it might as well be in Lucas' hands.

I couldn't agree more, why tell a Forum about it if it is not going to be available to its members? seems pretty damn silly to me, so I still say that this does not exist then.

Mverta, thank you for updating us. Best of luck. This appears to be a comprehensive restoration. I do look forward to following it on the Star Wars Legacy site. As much as I would love a copy of this, I do understand your reasons for keeping this private. If you having the only copy was the condition to getting access to these materials (i.e. film scans, software, etc.), that would make some sense, but, if ever those conditions change, please share.

At least if all else fails and Lucas has preserved no copy of the original version, your 4K version will still exist...

I do have two questions though:

  • Is this just for Star Wars or are you handling ESB and ROTJ as well?
  • Will you reveal what your source material us? Not of course exactly where and from whom you got it but just a basic description: i.e. a 4K telecine from a 70mm print, an 8K telecine from a 35mm print, a 2K telecine from a 16mm print, etc...

I'd wish you luck too, but if no one will ever see it I guess it doesn't really matter.

the guy is also selling t-shirts on his website for 20 bucks which look like they're only worth 2.  Personally i think he's just trying to profit off of OUT loyalists.

i would suggest a ban.

Really, ddonna? It's your third post and you're already suggesting we ban someone, who has been a member since '04. Granted that it is very unfortunate he won't share it, mverta is not trolling. He has his own website to show he is actually doing work. You also don't need to buy the shirts if you're against this.

Please understand, I'm honestly not trying to pick on you; I'm just saying an immediate suggestion to ban can come across as very abrupt. If you think someone is trolling, look at their profile first.

Legacy isn't about you or me; it's not about what we have or don't have.  It's about honoring Star Wars and preserving history.  It's done for Star Wars' sake; for history's sake.  That should be a unifying cause.  But when it really comes down to it, a lot of so-called fans don't actually care about protecting Star Wars in any meaningful way.  They just want the film for themselves, and if they can't have it, they throw a tantrum.  They don't rejoice in the fact that such a beautiful piece of work is safe.  All they really want to know is what they get or don't get out of the deal. And the irony is, that is the exact attitude which keeps them from having what they want, ultimately.

If someone came to you with the materials to do a Star Wars restoration beyond anyone's wildest dreams, on the condition that you may never share it publicly, what would you do? And if they came to you precisely because of your commitment to keeping it private; to the film itself; to history itself; because of your trustworthiness... what would you do?  Turn down the opportunity, or worse, betray that trust and guarantee no future prospects?  Doubtful.  You'd probably do what I did, which is enjoy the rewards of honor and principle, and let the future - the completely unknown future, by the way - play out as it will.

I document the process for education, entertainment, and celebration of Star Wars.  And while this concept seems foreign to some people, it can be gratifying to watch good work happen even if you have nothing directly to gain from it.  If you head over to scifi-meshes.com you will see talented 3D artists building amazingly accurate models of Star Wars ships (among other things) which nobody in the end will have any access to.  Nobody "gets" anything out of the deal, beyond enjoying the show, celebrating the craft, and learning a lot along the way.  For those for whom this concept is foreign and valueless: tough shit.  There are plenty of good restorations out there, anyway, so stop whining.

It's not my first rodeo.  When I was hired by Lucasfilm to do a new CG R2-D2, I went absolutely nuts with accuracy and detail - measuring, photographing, and documenting original units in the Lucasfilm Archives, and recreating every nuance possible in my CG model.  It took, ultimately, 4 years to do.  In the end, while it makes its appearance wherever it needs to, nobody "gets anything" for that, either. But I'm proud of the work, grateful to have been given the opportunity, and honored to have made any contribution to the world of Star Wars.  That has always been enough for me.

Most members of this forum wouldn't do it, because it is just a waste of time if nobody will be able to get it.

A restoration only makes sense if people actually care about the object and if it will be available to them and the future generations. The entire point of a preservation is to actually see or experience the object as it it was meant to be seen. Not just photos or descriptions, but the real thing. Thats why paintings, sculptures, buildings etc. are restored. If a movie is restored to its original form but nobody can watch it this defeats the entire purpose of the restoration.

Would you restore a painting to its former glory if it will just be hidden in a storage closet and never be shown in a museum?

Very well said, and I wholeheartedly agree with you, what a waste, but please keep telling us all here what you have, and what you have done, we will believe you, even though no one will ever see it LMAO!

Also, how is it bragging Troy if there is no proof?

The answer is: Yes, of course I would, because you never say never. You don't know what the future holds.  Perhaps Lucas will change his mind.  Perhaps after he's gone the estate will free it up.  Who knows?  But if the film isn't restored, then you've got nothing.  The assets needed to restore the film are deteriorating every day; they won't last forever.  If you have a chance to restore the film now, you take it, no matter what, because the chance won't come again.

That's the logistical, practical reason to do a restoration now, regardless of whether it gets distributed or not. But even that's not the best of reasons...  the best reason is for principle's sake.  You don't value that, which is why you don't have what you want.  The idea of this being about bragging rights is so infantile I almost don't want to address it, but if that's what matters to you, you can be assured your attitude is why you don't have them, either.

Hey Mike,

Good to hear from you.

I, for one, respect your reasons for not distributing your project. It's a shame that others do not, but based on the history of feedback in this thread the reaction above wasn't entirely unpredictable.

I wish to echo Moth3r's sentiments. While I do wish you would release your work, I can understand why you wish not to. It's a shame that some people react the way they do... but any chance you could preview more than the crawl for us? Couldn't hurt to ask.
