Blu-Ray and other HD box size STAR WARS covers — Page 5

You mind if I ask what kind of Blu-Ray cases you're using there, Rick?

I printed out the same covers but I couldn't have them fill in the width of the case all the way.  If I have the height perfect then the width is too short.

I am using cases from Dynex, which are apparently designed like the Elite cases.

I'm using standard Blu-Ray cases. I sort of cannibalized my own collection for them. It seems to me that you are having printing problems of some kind, maybe? Relative to the image, is there any of it missing? The cover should occupy all of the clear plastic real estate. If it isn't, it's probably a printing issue.

I'm going to investigate those cases. On that note, have you ever visited this site?

Very useful.

It might be printing issues.  Am I correct in assuming that those Drew Struzan covers were done by Video Collector?  I printed his out, and his dimensions are 10.43 by 5.85 inches.  That height appears to be perfect but that width isn't wide enough.  When I print out Harmy's covers I have to scale them down since they are really high resolution.  Since VS's height appears to be perfect I used that to resize Harmy's height.  When I do that Harmy's cover width is just a tad too wide, but that was easily fixed by cutting a little from one of the sides.

So Harmy's covers worked out great for me, but VS's are not wide enough.  Then again I could be going about this whole thing the wrong way.

Thanks for the link, I'll have to check it out.

I bought some of those Dynex cases today, and they fit the Struzan art perfectly. I print my covers from my Mac's Preview window, specifying actual size, or print whole image.

By the way, I was kind of wrong before. The covers don't take up all the space, as seen below.

But even my retail Blu's look like this, too.

Ok, glad it wasn't just me. The only reason I was concerned was because both Harmy's and retail covers were a little wider than those Struzan covers.

I guess if I could suggest anything to people making custom covers is to make the covers as close to 10.5 inches as possible.  Even if it is a little over, excess from either side can easily be cut.  Making an image wider for those printing these out isn't really a possibility without losing detail and quality in the image.

Where would I get some blu-ray cases?

I picked up mine at Best Buy.  I like them so I'll probably get more as they are needed.

I am sure they are cheaper online.

The ones at Microcenter are nice quality. I've picked up 6-disc and 2-disc Blu-ray cases there.

You can get cheap cases on eBay, but quality really varies, and it's hard to know what you're getting.

Eyeshot, these are AMAZING!  Thanks very much for using the classic poster art and putting together a DIY on the slipcase.  Can't wait to wrap my discs in this fine packaging!

I use www.sleevetown.com.  Good prices but shipping is a killer on small orders.

I honestly don't think they exist.

I thought I remembered standard DVD versions being posted at some point.  Maybe you could modify those for size?

Hah, these are covers I was working on. I will have to finish them up--hearing about the changes and canceling my order so dispirited me that I haven't looked at them in awhile. I'll work on finishing them up in the next week or two I think.

Weren't you also working on Revisited versions of these covers?  Maybe those are the ones I remembered seeing DVD versions of.

No, that was Vincent Smalls over in the Revisited thread, but using the same (well, mostly) Whalen art. I tweaked the posters for mine.

I did do a custom label for Revisited, but I've since yanked the Flickr image.

The biggest problem with the Whalen set is that the first 2 posters are available in high res, but not the third one.

Very, VERY glad to hear that! Can't wait to use them.

It may seem like I'm not releasing the covers, actually I've had no time to work on them. I've been trying to get as much school work done before fall break as I can so I can get my diploma faster. Since the work is all computer based, my eyes can't look at a computer screen at the end of the day. Now it's break and I can focus on the covers which should be done by the end of next week.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

At least you've got your priorities straight.  Glad to hear you're working on those covers again.  Really looking forward to them.

All right, my finished covers based on Tom Whalen's coverart.

Because I'm a member of a cover site elsewhere I can't post them here and I won't send the links. You can get them at euphoricfx.org (free registration).

Here's the previews:
