Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!) — Page 275

It may have been through film warping, causing it to bend and thus go mildly out of focus. If that were the case previous versions should have the same problems, but it's probably too hard to tell with VHS/Laserdisc. Even on the 2004 DVDs its practically invisible. If the negative was scratched in earlier years it may have been "wetprinted", which often causes a subtly blurrier.

This also may have even just happened. Maybe in 1997 the negatives was fine--this release had the least amount of film clean--up I believe--but by 2003 it had warped a little. You don't do wetgate prints in digital restoration usually, especially for a blockbuster.

From what I've seen, TPM looks fantastic, Star Wars looks about the same as the DVD (well a bit better since it's a blu ray) although I'd say the blacks might be even worse. Jedi looks awful, I don't know if anyone has mentioned (this topic has become too long to keep track of everything) but there's a part in Endor that looks particularly bad, like it's blurry or something.

yeh, i mentioned that. It's a problem with the 2004 transfer as there is no sharpness/ clarity drop on any version before that. It's as if the scan went out of focus for a whole section.

Of all the changes, "fixes", "improvements", ect, this going un-fixed is the most mind boggling thing. At least to this cat. Would it have been that big of a problem to try scanning this section again? If it was any other company, I'd say there must be nothing that can be done. But with the current state of LFL, I'd say they just didn't care.

Just wanted to add that the tatooine deleted scenes are in HD(even though the actual footage is in poor shape)---that is all I have checked out so far.

Fantastic to see it but also not difficult to see why a 32 year old Lucas binned it back in 76'.

I saw Star Wars in 1977. Many, many, many times. For 3 years it was just Star Wars...period. I saw it in good theaters, cheap theaters and drive-ins with those clunky metal speakers you hang on your window. The screen and sound quality never subtracted from the excitement. I can watch the original cut right now, over 30 years later, on some beat up VHS tape and enjoy it. It's the story that makes this movie. Nothing? else.

This static grain issue is strange. Lowry is supposed to be the best in the business - how could they put out a subpar product? Their own fault or under the direction of someone else?

Whatever, another double dip. Let's wait for the next ultimate definitive version.

As a prequel fan editor, I am absolutely appalled by this news that not only have they not included any true deleted scenes, but also haven't even included those from the damn dvd. What the hell?! I will never buy this even when it's down to £3 and Blu Ray is a defunct format. Lucas can suck my balls.

Looks like Bill Hunt is being attacked. Originaltrilogy.com is also mentioned toward the beginning. I'm still trying to figure this out:

How you can be an advocate for quality cinema while at the same time telling an artist that he MUST release earlier versions of his films he no longer supports is a contradiction.

I've been lurking for several weeks watching this thread.... I am one of those who agrees with most of what this community has been in arms about (aside from an extreme 10% or so of the more hyperbolic forum members), yet unfortunately I WILL still buy the blu-rays, as I am firmly addicted to Lucasfilm Kool-Aid. (Don't waste your breath hitting me with "you're part of the problem" nonsense.)

I have had nothing new to add to this thread, as I feel that most of my thoughts have been well articulated by others. However, the link above moved me to action, not because I think that the owner of that blog is a nutcase, but because he is an intelligent, thoughtful individual whose view is in direct opposition to most in this forum.

I have yet to have come across such a view articulated so well, so I responded on his blog. Our conversation has been illuminating, and I must admit, the guy has a point. I don't have to agree with it, but I do respect it.

To Adywan--

Greetings brother.... I fervently hope that Lucasfilm never decides to shut you down, as your "Revisited" versions are the perfect substitute, and by and large, an example of what we all feel Lucasfilm SHOULD have done.

well I watched AOTC blu today (well, i say watched...i watched the first 10 minutes and the last 30 minutes, fell asleep in the middle....been a long day)...and it looks just awful!

the battle of geonosis looks absolutely terrible, everything looks fake. the actors look so far removed from their digital surroundings that it just yanks you right out of the movie. Space Jam looks better!

The prequel deleted scenes, well i feel sorry for the prequel fans who wanted to see these, because they are a waste of time. The quality looks like they were ripped from youtube when it first started. There are a couple that the quality improves at times, but the majority look like crap.

What's the quality like on the 'lost 20' scene? I just read on star wars aficionado that it's included and wondered if it's good enough to insert into an edit.

Just saw the advert for the set on TV, they actually spent time involving the on-screen text....so that text is revealed when ships etc fly past etc......well at least they did put some thought into those effects.....pity about the movies:)

I happen to have seen the Close Encounters Blu-Ray and there is just no way this blows it away.

I have this set too.  If A New Hope is better, then it must be freaking amazing because CE3K looks fantastic and it's hard to top.

Great scene.  Not sure why it was deleted...

It was cut because it was the final sequence of a subplot involving Padme and numerous Senators (the "Delegation of 2,000") trying to get Palpatine to give back more power and authority to the Senate rather than himself.

Possible film warping? Jeez, JEDI just cannot catch a break. Like that movie isn't troubled enough. (as for the guy blogging about Bill Hunt, I find it worse when the person actually IS articulate. I just find it nasty when smart people can somehow be actively against film preservation, and on top of that are passing judgment on people based solely on their desire to buy 3 old movies. It's gross.)

It would need a lot of work doing to it before being inserted into any edit. The dialogue is all on set audio and the majority of the scene contains what appears to be pre-vis visual FX.

I also want to point out that although the alien subtitles are player generated, they appear within the picture frame (not in the black bars) and are the closest I've seen to the theatrical subtitles on an official widescreen home video release.

Oh, and AOTC is definitely uncut in the UK.

Eh, I'm not sure if I'd call the guy "articulate."  I mean, I guess he can string words together better than your average disgruntled, teenage nerd, but most of his points make no sense, or at least contradictory, and he seems to have ego bigger than Kansas.  The entire thing was dripping (and even occasionally explicitly stated) with a smugness of, "If you agree with me, then you're brilliant and enlightened.  If not, you're a terrible person not worth bothering with."  But then again, maybe it does take a certain ability to be articulate in order to make an opinion piece sound so much like a plea to save the starving children.  I particularly liked the part where he said, "His decision early on to support the blu-ray format during the HD wars was commendable."  Commendable?  Why?  Because he backed the winning horse?  Or because he happened to pick the same horse you were betting on?  What the hell is 'commendable' about that?

However, after taking another glance at the article just now, I'd say the argument for articulation falls apart just at how many times he throws out the word "fanboy."  Used in such abundance, it really does start to sound like your average disgruntled, teenage nerd.

Much thanks for that info, Bobby, though that is also very very damn disappointing to hear as I was really looking forward to using that scene. :(

On that note..... F*** you once again, Lucas. :/

That just tells you how low the bar is now over in Star Wars Idiocracy! That guy can be their president just by virtue of owning a thesaurus.

Haha, true, but he really needs to use that thesaurus to look up a synonym for "fanboy."

It looks like alot of people have the set in hand now.  But none of the deleted scenes have been uploaded to youtube, besides the officially released ones.

Can someone with the set please upload at least the wampa attack and Lukes's training from ESB?  Maybe to rapidshare or even youtube?  It would be much appreciated!
